I make fan trailer amvs and I want some helpful criticism. So far the only series I have posted is bleach, but regardless of your opinion on bleach I think these are exceptional trailer amvs. I don't want to be arrogant- I want to learn. If anyone has trailer amvs they think are better I would love you to post them so I could learn new techniques or methods. I'm not a professional level effects guy in that I have very few effects (those I do aren't great), but I have good sensibilities for editing.

I have to say, I didn't realize you were this good.
The timing is spot on, the quality is great and the good use of video effect adds an extra level to it.
I haven't become familiar with any of the video effect in my editing software as of yet. But this video has inspired me to try and use them in my next one. Because as I said, it really does add a whole new level.

Just a tip. I understand you were probably going for a fast paced AMV but in this video it seems there are to many cut ins/outs.
In other words to much is going on in to little of time in between.

If only it was as easy as that. I actually did get some 720p raws (I refuse to use anything with subs in my amvs) that looked damn good. I think something may have happened when I converted the file for upload to youtube that caused it's quality to go down. >_<

OH SNAP! **** JUST GOT EPIC! That's about as perfect as you can get for a fan made trailer. Not to inflate your ego or anything, but the timing was perfect, the mood was perfect, everything just felt right. If your specialty is fan trailers, then you don't have to worry about effects, all you have to do is focus on the mood of the video, which you got down to a tee on this one. What editing program do you use, If it's Vegas, I can give some tips on some simple effects that look really cool and don't throw it in peoples face.

This was crapped out from windows movie maker a while back during my early editing. I made it due to not liking how the original intro movies neglected timing in editing in favor of T & A. Ha, Super Book. The Death Note one was alright, some of the lip flaps are distracting. Learning how to mask could do you some real good.

The Good:
The editing seemed nice.
Most of the syncing was done correctly.
The special effects were also well done.
Despite me never watching this anime, the video managed to keep my interest.

The Bad:
The video was sort of pixelated at times. I recommend using DVD/Blu-Ray footage over TVrips and streaming site footage.
There were visible subtitles in the video. These are quite distracting and I strongly discourage using footage with fansub subtitles in plain site.
Some parts got sort of blurry when you appeared to zoom in the footage.
The station watermark was present in some parts.
I think I saw you attempting to lip sync in some parts of the video, but it was sort of off. If you need help on how to lip-sync, read this. (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/lipsync/lipsync.html)



Anyway, just keep at it and I'm sure you'll improve. Also, I suggest you look over this (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech31/)for technical assistance and this (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/kalium/index.html)for general guidelines on how to make AMVs.

Crop out the Golden Playhouse watermark. I'd also recommend sticking with one aspect ratio, so in that 2.39:1 part, you should probably crop it to 16:9 like the rest of the video. I think you sort of overdid the flashes, but you're welcome to keep those. To be fair, I pretty much always see effects like that as "in the way" so that's more of a personal bias than anything.

This is my 4th full-on AMV project. About 9 weeks to make.

Also my first attempt at "Original" animation.

Just some quick notes on "The Making Of..."

I was pretty moved from watching Clannad and After Story.
Kinda needed something to do with that so I put it into an AMV.
The lyrics to the song applied to the process as well as the content.
I also played the Visual Novel, and that also had an influence on how
I set up the segments.

Some quick trivia:
> First Full AMV in about a year.
> First Full AMV in HD
> First Full AMV to not have some sort of voice-over.

I had a lot of fun making this. Hope y'all find the watching experience to be as enjoyable.

the anime kinda lacks zombies so id say the audio is a poor choise

a few places the action and audio were in sync but there was many more combos to be done if you were going for this type of amv

generaly it makes no sence but the ending looked fine.

Technically speaking, I didn't see anything wrong with it. Although I did notice a few places where the
colors seemed a little washed out next to a shot with very bright vivid colors. (no, not talking about your flashback scenes)
some good transition work in there as well. Although there is a place before the '#37" sequence where you held on a black screen just a little long, imo.

I think your storytelling may need a little work, imo (as always, my opinion and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee
at McDonald's...In fact you don't even need my opinion for that.) As I recall, you introduce 3 (or 4) characters in the intro, then go on to
show a whole bunch of un-named players. I'm quite familiar with E-L, so I knew what was going on, but I think someone who hasn't seen it, would be a little lost.
However, you did seem to focus on the gore/ecchi side of E-L which does sum up the series pretty well.
Cutting to the changes helped to tie the audio and visual, but I really didn't see much other connection between the 2.

Bottom line: Great first effort. Make more!

You can always manipulate audio. Pretty much, if you have at least an understanding of music structure and can match up the beats, you can extend, or (as I often do) (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/56054393/XX%20AMV%20MINI%20UPLOADS%20XX/Cheap%20sunglasses.mp4) drop lyrics
to get to the point. Sometimes a simple crossfade following the beat is enough to seamlessly blend your cuts together.

do not know the technical terms for it but ive seen editors take the mouth to do extra movement for talking, in your case you could slap a picture of a non moving mouth on the characters since they dont speak or do the singing, it would look better and not distracting.

and if the mouth movement on the lalala part is intended i could go with better syncing.

where did you get the footage from? it might have just been my TV, but it looked a bit grainy in some places.

I liked it, especially thought the lip syncing fit really well a certain points. Has a good flow.
Only part I think could've been synced a little better is the frame by frame at 1:14. Not sure what all that entails, but I know the first frame seems about a second late on the beat.
But that's just a minor detail, still well done overall.

still need to work on lip sync and the slow downs as I mentioned before:
"I will have my vennnnngeance" you can see the smoke stoping which makes it obvious the frame is still, since anime characters have little face features some editors cut out a piece of the video [like the mouth] and sync it differently to let the background proceed while the lips match the lyrics.[as well as the head bopping]
most people overuse effects, but changing scenes with that fire was nice.
the video and lyrics sync is much better then in previous one, even fits the music. you could simply see all the emotion as one
still 480p
if you work on the lyp sinc and boost footadge quality this will be an answome amv.

Go here (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech31/amvapp.html), get the latest version of the AMV App, and I'm pretty sure that the stuff will show up in Adobe Premiere. Of course, I'm not too familiar with that program, since I use Sony Vegas, a program where you can just set the resolution you want the video to be and the format you want to output it as. Too lazy to go over the whole process, and I'll probably mess it up anyway, so I recommend reading this (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech31/index.html)when you have some free time.

basicaly the video has to be 30 frames per second or more and the resoliution of 1280 × 720 or 1920 × 1080

For most anime, you're actually supposed to use 23.976 frames per second, though it is easier to do the actual editing with the project set to 30 frames per second. Also, your final output depends on your source footage. If you're working with a really recent show that was released on Blu-Ray and your source is from said Blu-Ray or from a 1080p or 720p downloaded file, then you do whatever resolution it has set for you there. If you get your source from a DVD, some older shows, like Dragon Ball Z, will have a fullscreen (square) aspect ratio, requiring you to do the project in 640 x 480. If it's a widescreen (rectangular) aspect ratio show released on DVD, like Claymore, the do the project in 848 x 480. Though for the purpose of YouTube not messing it up, export the fullscreen dvd footage as 960 x 720 and widescreen dvd footage as 1280 x 720.

Wow I didn't expect this, well this is my first and only amv and I wouldn't have done this if not for my great love of SnK and Two Steps From Hell music, I envisioned it while watching the anime and I'm glad I put it into action. It's also my first time using vegas, maybe overlaying scenes are poorly done but I just put on the scenes on what I personally feel connects with each part of the song. And yes there is an emotional impact I am aiming for and my target is myself, and as I see you don't watch the anime, it actually tells a story especially in the chorus the clips are not random and it's really emotional at least for me. just saying

The scene wasn't suppose to look gloomy, I wanted it to look like she was just watching out over the town at the sunset, I thought it looked nice but now when you mentioning it, I probably should have chosen another scene there. baffling that you post it first in a dedicated thread then make a new thread anyway.

first one it felt like the begining draged on, could use some lyric sync with the video [there were even scenes passing each other which could hold a meaning on a few lyrics] if yer making love songs you dont realy need "more effects", feelings come not from flashyness.

second one is border on terrible music and footadge combo since vissuals are way too fast for such a genre. you dont do a rap dance on classical music.

very strong atmosphere skills there, cant tell a story thought [ or not trying?], the subs and speeches seems irrelevant to whats happening at some points. also a rare case when effects are used properly in amvs, so kudos for that.

I'm making my very first amv-hell like video/first amv in general, and I want to know how long should it be so that people will enjoy it without thinking it's a huge waste of their time? I have 3 minutes so far and I have ideas for more but I just want to know when's a good place to stop?

There is no real time limit, it all really depends on the creator. If you look at the first AMV Hells they were short but starting at 3 they became much longer. Its all going to depend on how funny they clips are and how well you make them flow, all I can say is use your judgement.

Seriously.....NEVER....EVER....do that again. That is the best advice I can give you. Find RAW files of the anime, block it out with the editing program, but NEVER let subtitles appear in your AMV unless they are relevant.

You showed slight glimpses of editing promise, but everything you did was wasted due to the subtitles being left in and glitchy frames everywhere.

You need better quality videos period! I can't stress this enough.

Last, you gotta be more consistent with the editing. For example, in the fullmetal alchemist clip, if you're going to go that direction, focus on Ed, Al, and Mustang. Seeing the Armstrong sister in there just had me going "WTF?"

Okay, so not horrid, but I have to agree with N.P.C.C., get rid of the subtitles. The basic trick would be to crop the videos. Or you could do what I do and get your videos in an mkv format. Then just convert them with a converting software. But for all your faults in the video, it wasn't half bad. Practice makes better, just remember that and continue what your doing.

And one last thing, though N.P.C.C. was a bit. . . harsh. . . with his words, take them to heart, and you'll get better.

Funny, I looked back at some of the amv hell spin off stuff I used to watch and can barley stand them now. I used to think they were good.
Since now I know what goes into making them, amvs with bad visual quality seem like an inexcusable laziness.
I think a few years back when I saw a skit that didn't make me laugh, I would just assume I didn't understand the reference or joke.
Now I pretty much know most any good reference out there and can see that they were just crappy amvs. Heck, I even take a new view to some of the skits in classic Hells.

Really? I don't care that you hated it because I knew it wasn't great. It was to be expected. But to base your need to belittle the damn thing off of me saying "don't be dick" when I posted it, it's disappointing. I'd be lying if i said it didn't rub me the wrong way, but in my defense that 's not the first time we've seen that phrase and it has resulted in....catastrophe. I apologize not for my wording, but for me not giving adequate positive aspects along with my criticism. They were there, it's just harder to notice when certain mistakes undermine the overall effort.

Now, as far as securing good footage i suggest you start torrenting at least until you buy the DVDs to rip from them. Just search baka bt or nyaa torrents with the anime title you need. If it can be avoided, avoid files that have hard subs as you can't remove those. You want soft subtitled files.

Download a program called "MKmerge" to remove the subtitled track from the video once you have them downloaded.

Don't over think things, people have done FAR FAR worse than you and with a couple of changes you'll get alot better. It's just better if you drop bad habits ASAP. They held me back for years.

some audio has lyrics which are incomprehensible
i see you tried doing audio and video syncronization but tell me whats the point of a clip, lets say look at my horse, it saw a horse, now what? is that suposed to be funny?
id say more but i didnt even feel like watching anymore.
if you want to make good amvs, try to convey some sort of idea or emotion so it wouldnt look like properly placed blandness.
also some of the "jokes" that i did notice, many have done the same, it pays off doing a lil research before making a clip to see how much of the internet has made the same joke.

I know you hate it because it's your job to hate things but yes. I thought the horse was funny. The only entertaining part of that entire anime was when Ayanokoji 's horse fell of this cliff and landed perfectly upright in some vines like it was it's job. that amv was more for my entertainment then anyone else (even though it was 5 seconds long.)
The few at the end where decent in my opinion, then again my opinion doesn't count because it's biased, but that's beside the point.
And out of curiosity which jokes were overused? and try, as hard as I can imagine it is to do for you, to not just say all of them. I'm just looking for things to work off of.

you ****ed up with aspec ratios, the black bars make it obvious.

the sub problem is not fixed as they should not exist
once again what you made is a mediocre random video slaped on a fighting sequence. when people make amv they use audio to enchance the video or give some sort ideas, you have absolutely nothing.
using several animes is something that requires some skill and consideration to make it work so choose 1 since yer a starter.
adding that effect with words not only serves no purpose but i actualy thought the video was corrupted for a second. again dont use effect anywhere. just to enhance.
i lost interest after 1:47 so you can take that as being gentle

Just will let you know, there is this file extension called .mkv, which will allow you to actually get rid of those subs.

But as far as the video goes - the video quality is good, no complaints from me there. It also seems like you have a basic grasp of timing, somewhat. you kind of falter after the opening of the video. However, subs make your whole video ****ty and pointless, you also seem to be just throwing **** in there for no reason. Listen to the song and try to fit some semblance of a theme or something. Stupid effects are stupid, try to focus on a raw editing style before moving on to effects. Pointless effects only make your video even more ****ty.

Overall, you do have potential, and your first amv is definitely better than my first one.

The voting results from the recent AMV challenges suggest that my idea of comedy isn’t very popular with the audience, so I thought I’d share these and gauge their reception/ hear some criticism.

I think it's my first try at lip syncing. lip syncing with live action is harder than expected.

I ripped it as an mp4 - poor choice on my part.
I was stilling learning about proper encoding and still am but Haar has given me alot of helpful tips and advice since that effort.

Where to start...

Well, first, you need to learn how to tell some sort of story here. The clips seem random and out of place. There's also no feeling of rhythm, you don't seem to keep to the beat of the song.

Second, if your going to use the OP, make sure you get a creditless version. And don't give me any of that "Well, the series is still ongoing," crap. It makes your video look like ****. If you don't have a creditless version, do not use the OP.

Third, if your gonna cut the song, do it with some sort of tact. It's highly distracting when the song goes off beat for no reason. Try to make it sound natural at least. Same goes with the ending of the video itself. It just kind of stops. . . ironic, now that I think about it.

But on the high note, you seem to know where to get decent quality footage. No watermark up in the corner and no subtitles, so keep it up with that. But other than that, I can't really seem to find anything else that I liked in the video. So in short, just practice, get an ear for music and learn to keep the beat. And for the love of god, don't use the OP if it has credits. Also, what editor are you using?

Wasn't too bad at least it kept a theme and pattern and told a story (just so you know I've never seen Death Note except for AMVH-style clips). Also like that you added text in the Death Note font, but sadly I didn't really notice it at times.

Song wise, lyric-parts are good, but I don't really like when AMV's start with the full metal instrumental.

I didn't find it that interesting. It just strikes me as one of those amvs with a fight scene over music that has no context behind with which to really get the viewer invested. Give me a story to grasp on to man!

First and for most i must admit i'm a tad bias against amvs that use effects like that rapidly. I personally feel real skill comes from being able to manipulate what the anime gives you minus the occasional fade. Aside from my subjective rationale, i thought this was a solid enough effort. I kinda liked the black fonts with the lyrics. IT was simple, but lended flare in more of a way than i felt all the effects did.

Since it has been awhile...Might as well be outrageous here again.

The old fashioned movie filter at the beginning didn't really do anything for it.
To many fades and the black boarder around a lot of the scenes were really unnecessary.
Also the song ends at a random point.

I swear i saw that joke on american dad tonight. Besides that, the truth is i don't think the joke was executed that well.

TV station watermarks are present, aspect ratio is jacked up, and there is little to no connection between the transition of the witch flying and the explosion happening. Especially since it seems to go from mid day to dusk/twilight in an instant. That just doesn't work in its current form.

well youre finaly turning the right way, just need some practice in making the sync smoother, also id advize sticking to a single anime/character [ i know it might not have all the scenes you need, but im pretty sure everything coulda done with sasuke if my memory serves right], its not easy using multiple animes to make it look good.
