From my perspective, death metal is more technically challenged, more quality-oriented, while black metal has more to do with the atmosphere/"raw" sound, sometimes instrument parts being hardly distinguishable from each other. Overall, DM musicians are seen as better players, while BM pricks are more fond of painting themselves and barely having any musical skills whatsoever (excluding some old bands). They also sell audiotapes to this day.

Generally, black metal is one of the many sub-genres of death metal. In terms of sound, vocals are the only prominent difference as black metal focuses on screeches rather than growls. It should also be noted that black metal is generally categorized based upon the lyrical themes of the band as black metal's name is derived from the "black arts/dark arts." Because of this, the bands that sing about witchcraft, Satanism, LeVeyan satanism, or the occult are classified as black metal. The other thing is that most of them are Grimdark McEdgy teenagers who want to rebel against their parents.
