Gotta agree. I like the use, being familiar with UNIX or BSD OSs, but when I install it, it's like a whole lot of almost-working programs, or everything requires WINE, because it's a Windows program.

I have another question involving AVI Synth, if it's not asking to much if so you have my humble apologies but how do you convert a directshow avi file into vfw format with it or any other file in that matter. "Yes I read the guide for AVI Synth and AvSP Mod too and it doesn't say how I can do this task", so if someone could give me an explaination or example it would be much appreciated.

Let me make my last post clear if not confusing, but can I use AVI Synth to convert a video file format with a converter if possible?

I'm not trying to complain or anything, I'm just curious if maybe there's some kind of workaround of the problems using such a simple software as Windows Movie Maker would potentially cause or at least if there was a better free or cheaper software. This is my first time looking at something like this and I'm not so fast to catch on to these things otherwise either.

Sorry for the probably already-answered comment.

Are you sure that "$200 or higher" was correct, Diddlemuffins? I use Sony Vegas Platinum for all of my videos - it has a great range of functionality and the only significant feature from the Pro version that I've noticed missing is masking - and I bought it from a high-street store for less than half that price.
There was a young clerk who disagreed sharply with one of Curzon's memoranda. He thought it was balls. But he was afraid to say so directly, so he scratched faintly in the margin, "Round Objects". Lord Curzon replied in a note: "Who is Mr. Round, and why does he object?"

Question? About AVI, I want to know how you can make it lossless if the majority of them contain XVid,DivX or MPEG-2 format when converting, since Sony Vegas can only read the three I mentioned. Need an explaination, thnx.

Using WMM to make a clip, and I've hit a snag,
I imported the DirectShow footage into an avisynth file, opened that AVISynth file in VirtualDub, but when I go to compress it, Lagarith is not in the list of codecs I can choose from. Is there a good alternative or do I have to get Lagarith from somewhere else?

My AviSynth file is one line, just: DirectShowSource("C:\AMVExport\yourDVexport.avi",29.97)
but with the directory of my file in the quotes instead of what was written. Is the "AMVExport" part important, cause it shows my video without it, but not with it?

The other option in the guide is to export for local playback, but my version of WMM is different than the one shown. "save movie wizard"" is called "publish movie" on my version of WMM, and it doesn't have the "video for local playback" in the pulldown menu as shown in the guide. Is the bubble next to "best quality for playback on my computer" the same, or would that not work?

(also it says the .avi footage won't open in virtualdub without an aviSynth script, but I got that to open without it, so I may have done something wrong when publishing)

I'm at this page in the guide for reference.

You are supposed to put the actual file path to your video, not just copy the "C:\AMVExport\yourDVexport.avi" part.
Also its worth noting that that guide for windows movie maker is probably not up to date, mainly because WMM is not recommended as an editing program.

underlined for emphasis: I'm dumb, but not that dumb.
so am I SOL as far as lagarith is concerned?
Edit: Nevermind I found Lagarith on it's creator's webpage. He credited you for helping to test it Zarxrax, small world huh?
