My host just contacted me and told me that the really long threads here are putting undue strain on the server. In fact, I am pretty sure that this is the root cause of the problems the site has been having with downtime recently. Because of this, I will be locking all threads that exceed 100 pages in length. If you wish to continue these threads, you can make a new thread to continue them in.

Update:
Although I have moved to a new host and am using different forum software, this rule will remain in effect.

Actually, perhaps we could host threads that we know will be long off-site? Like count to a million, creating new threads would probably produce the same amount of strain. We dedicate another forum to long topics to lessen the strain here.

It would probably take a dedicated server or something. Not really worth the effort probably. And anyways, who would wanna go to a different site? :p

Well, like I said, simply creating more threads would cause the same amount of strain, would it not?

No, the problem is the amount of posts contained in a single thread. One thread with many many posts will cause issues, but the same number of posts spread across multiple threads would be much less so.

Will the old threads with 100+ pages be deleted then?

Well, wait, instead of just locking all the really long threads, why not just lock all the inactive ones? Surley that would free up more some strain? And prevent ancient posts being bumped up (I think I saw somebody complaining about that long ago...)

Zarxrax
01-30-2009, 04:00 AM
because the inactive threads aren't the ones causing problems...

still, even if they are locked, don't they take up space unless they are deleted?

It's not a problem of space, but rather processing time used by accessing the threads in the database. Anytime something is done with one of those threads, it has to process through every single post in that thread.

AH!! I see said the blind woman. That makes sense. Thank you mighty Zarxarx for taking the time to educate a poor, misinformed soul... (dramtic airs for effect).

Isn't that like flipping through a photo album of all your exes before you can have intercourse with a new person?
What a waste of time.

Durn Women.. always ending up right. When I discover the unfair advantage of men I will unjustly use it to it's fairest potential.
And cool, I guess.. I remember back in grade school, when I believed the story that "Sidekicks are the ones that superheroes kick when things aren't working out."
Actually, I still kinda believe that.

There are three type of people in this world dicks pussies and assholes.
Pussies don't like dicks because pussies get ****ed by dicks. But dicks also **** assholes. Assholes that just want to **** on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can **** a asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is they **** too much or **** when it isn't appropriate. And it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes pussies can be so full of **** that they become assholes themselves. Because pussies are a inch and half away from assholes.

so what are you?
