I thought we needed this... but i am always wrong

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?

Answer: an eye

Einstein's Riddle

The story behind Einstein's riddle is that Albert Einstein created it in the late 1800s, and claimed that 98% of the world population couldn't solve it. I am not sure of the true origin, but I have seen this one floating around the internet, and it is a good brain exercise. Here it is:

- In a street there are five houses, painted five different colors.

- In each house lives a person of different nationality.

- These five homeowners each drink a different kind of beverage, smoke different brand of cigar and keep a different pet.

Einstein's riddle is: Who owns the fish?

Necessary clues:

1. The British man lives in a red house.
2. The Swedish man keeps dogs as pets.
3. The Danish man drinks tea.
4. The Green house is next to, and on the left of the White house.
5. The owner of the Green house drinks coffee.
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
7. The owner of the Yellow house smokes Dunhill.
8. The man living in the center house drinks milk.
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house.
10. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks beer.
13. The German smokes Prince.
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
15. The Blends smoker lives next to the one who drinks water.

Okay then.. I'm pretty confident about my answer, and the lack of possibility of multiple answers. I wasn't sure because it seemed more like a logic puzzle than a riddle.
Pretty much solve for x.

A farmer was going to town with a fox, a goose and a sack of corn. When he came to a stream, he had to cross in a tiny boat, and could only take across one thing at a time. However, if he left the fox alone with the goose, the fox would eat the goose, and if he left the goose alone with the corn, the goose would eat the corn. How does he get them all safely over the stream?

AND

Why was the man able to pass three cars going 70 miles-per-hour, while he was going only 60 miles-per-hour?

and finally

One day a man was working late one night and he got tired and turned off the light went downstairs and slept. The next day he goes out and gets the newspaper and then kills himself why?

You mean next riddles. I gave answers to the first two (Hidden) below. The last one seems very ambiguous and could lead to multiple conclusions that seem valid (like he read that a close relative/friend died).

Question 1: Get the goose, cross river, drop off goose, cross river, Get the corn, cross river, drop off corn and get the goose, cross river ,drop off goose and get the fox, cross river, drop off fox, cross river, Get the goose, cross river, and end with everone

Question 2: The word pass has mutiple meanings in this context. In order for this statement to be true, the three other cars passed the farmer

Odessa

i've heard of the latter two, below in white:

the man passed the cars going the other direction.

the man killed himself as the light he turned off was a lighthouse, and this resulted in a ship wreck.

Prepare for utter mind implosion.

Two princes and a princess were captured and brought to a dungeon to be tortured. However, the man in charge of the torturing was a man with weird morals, so he only tortured the ones he though deserved it. He didn't like punishing anyone who could answer his questions...

He brought out five hats, 2 blue and 3 green. He then blindfolded the new prisoners and then put hats on each of them.

"It's simple. I take off your blindfold, and you tell me what color your hat is, blue or green. Mind, these are made specifically where you can't tell what color hat you are wearing yourself, and as you could see, there are no mirrors in this room. Reach for them and you die on the spot. Get it wrong and the rest of your short life will be nothing but pain and suffering!"

He started with the first prince, Prince Abel. The man removed his blindfold. The prince looked around, then started to panic. "I don't know!" He said. The prince was dragged off into the darkness. Screaming could be heard for a good thirty minutes, then there was silence.

The second prince was next. Th man removed his blindfold. This prince also looked around (the previous princes hat was laying on the floor), then started to panic as well. "I also don't know!" He said. He to was dragged off into the darkness, and a single peep was heard before there was silence.

The princess was last. The man reached for her blindfold, but she stopped him. "If I guess my hat color without taking off the blindfold then you must let the princes free as well!" She remarked. The man thought on this.

"Agreed!" He said.

Did the group go free? And if so, what color was the girl's hat?

I really hope that this one isn't one of those that has a stupid answer (like the princess said that her hat was either blue or green) or that she just guessed through probablility. Or it would be really bad if it was said that the princess got it wrong and they were all tortured or that the riddle was worded wrong.

Heres my work for this: the eneral approach to this problem is that since the princess was able to figure out that the sceond prince was unable to guess figure out his hat color just by looking at the first prince's hat, the princess should be able to deduce her hat is either green or blue from that info.

If the hat of the first prince's hat was green, then there is a 50% chance that he is wearing green. green-green,green;green,blue;blue,green;blue,blue;
ifthe hat of the first prince's hat was blue, then there is a 67% chance that he is wearing green. blue-green,green;green,blue;blue,green;

And that's as far as I could get in 3 minutes. I'll let someone else figure it out.

my thoughts:

I don't know... there has to be a trick to it, like the torturer is also wearing a hat, or the other hats are all visible as well. i think it has to do with how the first two can't decide; they must see the color hats they are not wearing.

for example, prince 2 green and 1 blue hat, not sure which his hat is.

and then price 2 sees the same thing. this must (somehow) tell the princess what hats they can see, to make it so she has to know what hat she is wearing.

i think the answer has to be green, for if both princes see a blue hat, they must both be wearing blue, making hers a green hat.

I think.

Issitheus

Since there were two blue and three green, then SOMEONE was wearing a green hat. The first prince was able to see the hats and thus, can't figure out his own, since he saw a green hat. If the other two hats were blue, then his would've been green and he would've gotten away. If the other two hats were green, he still wouldn't have enough info.

Same with the second prince. Since he also saw a green hat, he too had little to go on. Thing is, if there were TWO green hats, he would've known that his hat was blue, due to the other princes reaction. Thus, The first prince had a blue hat.

Thus, the princess used their reactions to determine that she had a green hat, since the other two lacked the information she had by knowing that both had blue hats.

it's simple really, since neither of the princes could get it; they both were wearing hats that caused them to not have enough information to answer that means that both had to have blue hats

Odessa
03-04-2009, 03:08 AM
ok, both if prince oen sees only one blue hat, and only one green hat.

prince two sees a blue hat and green hat.

even knowing the hat colors (princes have blue, princess has green) there are still two green hats unaccountered for to through the question off. where do they appear, if at all?

i know where you are coming from, but I think the question is misleading in what it tells you, and what it doesn't tel you (what hats the princes can see; just the ones on the others, or the hats not being used at all?)
