The simple question: Why are most amine characters (like 95%) white, or have caucasian characteristcs(large round eyes.... blonde hair **** like that.

Been wondering about it doesn't make much sence to me, as the way I see it anime is largely directed at japanese audiences. I know they also target western countries, but its the same with American cinema; made for Americand and sold around the world.

But (obviously) most of the characters in american movies are either caucasian or african american.

I'm cut and pasting from the always reliable wikipedia page on anime. Seriously, I have read about this before and there are links on the page.

A common approach is the large eyes style drawn on many anime and manga characters. Osamu Tezuka, who is believed to have been the first to use this technique, was inspired by the exaggerated features of American cartoon characters such as Betty Boop, Mickey Mouse, and Disney's Bambi.[3][20] Tezuka found that large eyes style allowed his characters to show emotions distinctly. When Tezuka began drawing Ribbon no Kishi, the first manga specifically targeted at young girls, Tezuka further exaggerated the size of the characters' eyes. Indeed, through Ribbon no Kishi, Tezuka set a stylistic template that later sh?jo artists tended to follow.

Coloring is added to give eyes, particularly the cornea, and some depth. The depth is accomplished by applying variable color shading. Generally, a mixture of a light shade, the tone color, and a dark shade is used.[21][22] Cultural anthropologist Matt Thorn argues that Japanese animators and audiences do not perceive such stylized eyes as inherently more or less foreign.[5]

Also Japan is very raciest people of black skin and other shades are looked at as "lesser/inferior" people so any person that has a darker skin tone in any anime has thick lips and a more gangly body there very stereotypical...... as the eyes go It has to go with what imphic said about starting with young girls as the target so they made the people looked as cute as possible and it just stuck as far as hair goes thay like different hair color as you could amagen most of Japan's hair color is raven and dark brown it's pretty simple to figer that one out.

i agree with imphic that the eyes are drawn big to show emotion, and with anime the eyes just work so well they let u visually understand a situation, event or action without the words being said

Strange, I've heard that opinion and the exact opposite.

I also see varying degrees of this in anime.

In one anime (I don't know they name) where girls did some sort of obstacle course race shilw running with these big rollers had a girl from africa, an the only difference was that she seemed more energetic and silly, whereas the chinese contestant was portrayed as an overconfident failure.

In Lucky Star I was extreemly surprised to see how the indian tourists looked like copies of some sort of highly racist cartoom depicting black people.

But in Azumanga Dioh it almost seemed like excessive detail was paid to the design of forigners then to the main characters.... thoughts?
