Yea, burnt in subtitles doesn't look good. This is why I haven't done anything with Dokuro-Chan or Miyuki-Chan.
Amazon has some good deals (Its acceptable to get USED DVDs).

You can also make the clip size bigger so the subtitles aren't on screen. I did that with my Dokuro-chan clip.

So? A US release still exists, it just wasn't dubbed.

yeah I've seen Dokuro-Chan in best buy as well, and most people don't download the dubbed version, they get the raws

When I download, I wont download unless it is dual audio, so I can make a DVD of the show (for my own personal use, with the intent to buy) if I like it.

Depending on what video editing program you use, you can crop the video to not show the subtitles. It took me a while to figure out that I could do that so a lot of my older amvs have subtitles. If you're looking for a good program try vegas video studio...I am using version 6.0.

you know... most programs let you disable subtitles, that is if they aren't hard-burnt..

Why? It makes it more tedious to use the footage in AMVs

I always download sufbsubbed episodes, I like how you can change the font, size, color etc etc
and if you want to use it for something you can extract the subs pretty easily

As a source of DVDs for people like me with little money, Swap A DVD is a great free service. All it costs you is postage to mail a DVD - couple dollars US.
Sadly there is little anime there - but if the AMV community got into it............
We use it all the time at home. We get a movie, watch it, then keep it if we want or re-list it - or whatever we feel like. It's OURS.
