I've got a buddy that is from Belgium, that barely speaks Japanese but got the job because his English is "Ok". He works for a private school too. So I doubt you'd need any Japanese ;)

You don't actually need to know Japanese to teach English in Japan(which you should know if you were really serious about this and had done the research), however I've played with the idea as have a lot of people I know, I'm not sure how much longer Japan will actually need more English teachers

How can you teach a foreign language without knowing the native?

well my information claims that you will most likey be teaching an upper level class(which is supposed to be a lot like teaching an English class in America; they already understand English it's just about perfecting it(which as we all know is a huge pain)) Though I'm told that those teaching a beginner English class might get a bilingual aid

My mom teaches beginning and intermediate ESL to students from all over the world. While being a native Spanish-speaker helps greatly when teaching Latinos, she also manages (very well, apparently) to teach others whose native language she doesn't speak (including Japanese, Korean, Russian, etc.).

Well, I'll learn Japanese out of principle. If Someone comes here, I'll expect them to know a spot of English. To not be a hypocrite, If I go to a foreign nation for an extended period of time I'll learn their language.

It makes sense because then you're not just dealing with teaching them English. You're adapting to another culture on top of that.

right, WHO am I to make someone that is in the Majority go out of their way to speak a language that they hardly ever have to speak.

I tried to learn japanese before but apparently my dvd's were the outdated form of their language....and I thought we had issues; but I gotta say teaching english in another country is pretty easy nowadays you are just a mature form of teaching someone like a child...though I highly recommend no baby faces

I'm studying Japanese (rather sporadically, but still studying) with Teach Yourself Beginner's Japanese. The book/CD package was pretty cheap and so far I've learned a lot from it. Rosetta seems very interesting, although I can't say I've got the necessary pocket money for it. ^^;

My school offers RosettaStone for free to all students, so I tried it out for Japanese, and it was tough. I hardly understand anything.
abyssion1337

I could pirate Rosetta stone, of course, Roseatta stone's learning cure is entirely based on trial by error, it's hard unless you really really really stick with it

If it was hard to learn I'd recommend Rocket Japanese, It's really slow, and it's an audio course so you can re-wind and put it on your iPod and stuff. I kinda' feel like an idiot for learning from it at times 'cause it's so slow, but hey, as long as you actually learn a language, 't doesn't matter how you did it right?
-eh... but it's like a hundred dollars as opposed to free...

it's probably pretty easy for the school to do that as an organization

still requires A **** LOAD of money to get that many copies and for different languages
abyssion1337
09-14-2009, 04:07 AM
not terribly much; this is much less about the organization argument and more for rosseta stone's marketing, anyone who tries it will supposedly find that it works, after they graduate they won't have it for free anymore so they'll be paying Rosetta stone if they need to learn a new language, it's an investment on their part
