If you weren't aware, a live action GITS movie is in the works, Steven Spielberg is directing and the script is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, who was the screenwriter for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider amongst other things.
My main worry for the live action version is that it will be "dumbed down" into a generic, sci-fi action film. On the other hand, Spielberg directing is good sign, and GITS does have the potential to work well on the big screen.
Other than that, the main question I want answering is if it will be a straight adaptation or a new storyline, and if it is an adaptation, will it be of the manga or the anime?
So, what are your thoughts on the movie? Good or bad idea?

I heard that they'll probably end up dropping the project, we've actually discussed this at length a while back in the forums though so I'm not sure how successful you'll be at starting a discussion

we may have missed talking about it, I know we tackled live action Dragon Ball, Akira and GITS around the same time since they were all announced a couple years ago

haven't watched ghost in shell, but I don't think live action movie is a good idea, for some reason they always seem to fail, it's kinda a pity :(

I don't see any essential reason why the project couldn't work - GitS generally wears anime conventions very lightly and there have been plenty of 'cyberpunk' films from Hollywood already, so the principle at least is established. GitS is something that can be seen as general unattached 'scifi' first and foremost, rather than the more limiting 'anime adaptation'. Having a sexpot main character is always a plus for commercial viability, although you couldn't have her stripping down every time she wanted to activate her cloaking device as she does in the anime films.

A live-action GitS's main obstacles would be a lack of brand recognition (GitS is still pretty anonymous outside of anime circles, although a big-name director would help to alleviate that), and the characteristic philosophising perhaps being inaccessible to a popcorn crowd, although that ultimately depends upon the quality of the script.

Ghost in the shell wouldnt make sense to the average person who doesnt watch anime, they would have to dumb it down, ALOT.
On a side note, i know they are working on another script for a Cowboy Bebop movie, seeing as the first one was set to cost half a billion dollars to make. I just dislike the idea of Keanu Reeves playing spike

the series is great, but i don't know about a live-action movie. i have a bad feeling that hollywood will screw it up.

Similar story, but even it was different from the source it was based off of.

Ghost in the shell, bubblegum crisis and Armatige III were inspired by Blade Runner.

Yeah, so if they made a Ghost movie, everyone would compare it to blade runner anyhow, might as well re-make blade runner
