because posting in such a smart thread, you was supposed either to say "we already have like 18 similar threads, go kill yourdelf with fire" or "you guys should have watched more amine, then you wouldn't ask suh a question" or ignore it. The last is most expectable.

apparently but he seems disappointed so I'll say all of this:
But first of all come on, I would never suggest you kill yourself with fire, I'd tell you to wear a meat suit and jump into the polar bear pen at the zoo, at least then you'd be doing something useful. Other than that yeah, it is a bit disappointing to not see people putting things down like Eva, Nadesico, Captain Harlock, or Maison Ikkoku or really anything else from TVtropes essential anime.
Things people have been putting down are good but I remember when anime dared to be about things like space cowboys with guns that shoot magical bullets, or about a girl with a book full of magical cards that she used to capture other rogue magical cards or about a lesbian that gets turned into a car (I've lost people on this one I just know it) or about guy that ends up having 7 aliens falling in love with him and wanting nothing to do with any of them. And no I didn't just leave the TV on after taking lots of drugs, this all actually happened

See, these are the kind of things that make Japanese animation so great. And also what make it so Japanese.
I've really enjoyed Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and Lucky Star (in between all the intense violence). I actually wrote an essay for AP English this week about what it means to be a real man, and by a "real man" I mean one who kicks reason to the curb and goes beyond the impossible. Code Geass was excellent as long as you're fine with black and grey morality (anyone who's truly a good person will be killed painfully). Lucky Star... truly defies explanation as to why it grabs my interest, but I simply can't resist it.
Currently I'm watching Cowboy Bebop, Tenjou Tenge, and Azumanga Daioh. Cowboy Bebop is looking like a new favorite for me. Great characters and storyline, and the opening is excellent (reminds me of an iPod commercial). Tenjou Tenge is fairly average, good animation quality and fight scenes but not much else. Typical over-the-top hot-blooded protagonists and random sexual encounters.

does this apply to manga? i have too many of them i love and my absolute favs are; Berserk, Neon genesis Evangelion, Full metal alchemist, chobits, chrono crusade... and many many more!
in anime i like; end of eva, Blue sub #6, serial experiments lain, urusai yatsura, Samurai X (trust betrayal), and some other titles that dont seem to be too important.
but in my opinion i like manga the best (they put more depth in it that in anime)

Ack. Jt like the characters thread, I've been putting off posting in here because I make sure to put a lot of thought into my posts in threads like this. This list is very carefully ordered, from my absolute favorite of all time down to the 10th. Movies included here (Not all Miyazaki films are created equal).
1: Gurren Lagann
2: Clannad
3: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
4: FLCL
5: Mushi-shi
6: Haibane Renmei
7: NGE (original ending)
8: Princess Mononoke
9: Spice and Wolf
10: 5 Centimeters Per Second
I prefer my series to have some depth to them. Even if they're supposed to be a comedy. Hence FLCL being the only comedy on there. Gurren Lagann isn't really all that deep, but it wins out through amazing characters and sheer force of awesome.

Without a doubt, and with all my heart i will always love Rahxephon, other than that, the old standards, Hellsing, Elfen Lied, Godannar, Black Lagoon, Najica Blitz Tactics, i challenge anyone to deny the awesomeness of Cowboy Bebop or Escaflowne. heck, i'm still in love with (gettin' old school) the original Guyver on vhs, The Original Dirty Pair, even Ronin Warriors. don't get me started on Robotech or Trigun, all i hear these days are "Bleach this, or Naruto that", Bring back the golden oldies i say!!!

Don't worry, we don't have any Narutards here. Believe it. OH GOD, I'm sorry, it just kind of slipped out!
Nah, jk, we literally have no Narutards who regularly post. We have a couple guys who are into Bleach but it's not what they talk about.
I have one caveat: Najica Blitz Tactics? Honestly? We had a guy in our old anime club called Hans. He had a habit where every time there were a pair of exposed tits or a panty shot on screen he would say "Bow chicka bow-bow!" It worked great for most anime because you could rely on him to say it but it wouldn't stay in your mind long enough for it be predictable. When we watched Najica, he was doing it about every 15 seconds until he finally just rolled over and said "**** it. I'm gonna go horse."
Also, I hope you like Macross if you like Robotech.
And in terms of most of these series, you'll find plenty of company. Especially Trigun. EVERYBODY loves Trigun! Except for me. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it, but I liked the manga so much more.

hmm
no particular order...
-Hellsing Ultimate
-Full Metal Alchemist (old and new)
-Great Teacher Onizuka
-One Piece (490 episodes in... and still getting better. unlike bleach >:O)
-Gurren Laggan
-Trigun
-Welcome to the NHK
-Darker than Black (first season... 2nd wasnt great)
-Black Lagoon
-Outlaw Star
I'll probably kick myself later for leaving out a couple of other favourites of mine... but thats a pretty good representation of my favourite animes.
and... i do like naruto. but the anime moves too slow most of the time. Manga is better. I appreciate naruto because like one piece, it gets better the farther in you go. it starts off simple and gets more complex and mature as you go. its the same thing dragonball went for, but done better by both one piece and naruto. bleach tried as well but... i lost interest as it just devolved to ridiculous fighting against ridiculous opponents... felt like filler (even when it followed the manga).

05-05-2010, 06:33 PM
which? gto? or nhk?
My favourite series are ones that have can elicit some emotional response. pure action can be entertaining, but the best shows do more... they make you actually care about the characters. all the shows i listed were able to get to me at certain points... (ok maybe not hellsing ultimate... that one is just pure action awesomeness... but it has alucard and anderson...). anyways, i tend towards action shows, but I like other types as well. I have no patience for romantic shows though. Romance can be good when its not all cheesy and cliched. NHK had some romance and they did it really well. it was intermixed with everything else. East of Eden is another good example.
Useful
05-05-2010, 06:45 PM
I was specifically referring to NHK. Though come to think of it, GTO is similar in some ways. And I definitely got the impression that you couldn't much stand romance. But I am also of the opinion that your definition of cheesy and cliched may be a little broad. I recommend to you The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Really worth it, trust me. And I won't begrudge you if you don't like it, but I think you might.
Matey
05-05-2010, 06:48 PM
From the bit i've seen, it actually looks ok. I just usually dont care for shows that have nothing but romance. Similar to how pure action usually doesnt make it to my favourites list, though i admit, i like pure action a lot more than pure romance. I'll watch Girl who Leapt through Time, and let you know what I think.
I think my biggest issue with romance in anime... is its almost always characters between 12-18. I find I just don't care at all about the characters involved. Other shows manage it with characters in that age group, because they have other things on the side. Eureka 7 did a pretty good job of it, but it wasnt overly romantic.
A non-anime series that I enjoyed that had a fair ammount of romantic focus would be Chuck. the show is comedy, action, and romance... fairly well blended together. the romance there was more appealing because it was between adults, and it was more realistic (when they arent running around fighting terrorists at least).

hey useful, I think you want the character thread, anyway, I've gotten pretty far into Monster and DAMN, also I'd like to put down Kino's Journey for being mature (no not for the same reasons Elfen Lied is, you could show most episodes to a child they just wouldn't get it at all) and having actual depth (again, I'm not saying things like Elfen lied or Death Note are shallow, but they have nothing on Kino's Journey) I'm going to stop right now since if I go any further I'll have ceased praising it and will just be sexing up Kino

No, don't rape our celibate heroes! They obviously don't want it. Also, I agree completely about Kino's journey. Have you ever read the Martian Chronicles, because Kino's Journey reminds me of that.
And yeah, I'm screwing up a lot today. Probably because I'm doing a lot of things online at once, and therefore going a long time in between posts. At least enough time to forget what thread I'm on.

Well... they're along the lines of "encounter situation of varying mysterious content, complete with curious moral dilemma and solution". But it's a series of short stories with no recurring characters. That takes place on Mars. They're totally worth the read though; they're significantly better than, in my VERY humble opinion (I'm no literature critic), Dandelion Wine, also by Ray Bradbury.
abyssion1337
06-09-2010, 04:44 AM
I've read quite a bit of Bradbury, dandelion wine might be a little overrated, but I think that Kino's journey works so well because of the recurring character (you could say characters but Hermes doesn't really add much other than making Kino look smart and setting up exposition)
