how about an anime with really good plot, as close to zero fan service as possible, good action and/or comedy.
a few shows i have really enjoyed would be: FMA, 2/3s of Death Note, Black Lagoon, GTO, One Piece, 1st season of Darker than Black, Outlaw Star...
those are just some examples to give people an idea the kind of shows i enjoy... so if anyone has some good suggestions of shows i may have missed out on... lemme know.

Aaaargh... Clannad? why is it rated so good? it sounds so horrible and boring?! are there any redeeming qualties? i havent actually watched an episode.. but it looks like a show about some emo teen in a school full of moe girls who all like him despite him having no likable qualities. and i assume it will just be episode after episode of awkward situations that are supposed to be hilarious... am i wrong about this show?! is it actually not like this?!

are there animes out there like Baccano! and Durarara, animes filled with lots of epic and loads of main characters??
acutekat
06-13-2010, 02:20 AM
try gintama for a large assortment of recurring characters
FMA and the new FMA are epic with a good assortment of characters
ss-cry-ed (or some modification of that) has epic characters
abyssion1337
06-13-2010, 02:30 AM

A: No, no, no.

A: Nonsense!
ACK: Oh, this is futile!
if you are going to disagree with me atleast post some valid points such as:
Gintama isn't very epic, it only rated a 3.2 on the epic ricter scale, or its characters are lame scoring a 1440 out of a max of 1600 points on the SAT (snores alot test)
granted you don't have to go the sarcastic route you could merely point out how the series are diametricly different using literary terms to describe how the cast and plot have absolutely nothing to do with the other series
abyssion1337
06-13-2010, 03:01 AM
Kat have you actually seen Baccano and Durarara, because I'm convinced that if you have you'd know better than to use Gintama and S-cry-ed as comparisons, again I'd give you the benefit of the doubt that you're just not as good at analyzing as I am.

Well, if you're looking for a good ending, don't mind a generous slathering of fanservice, and don't want to think overmuch, I'd recommend Godannar. It's not a classic, but the animation is good and the mecha designs are pretty cool. I liked it.

well yeah, I don't think there was a way for that to have a happy ending and have nearly the same amount of value
like I said, finding something like Baccano is nigh impossible because it has its own flavor
I'd suggest Lupin III, yeah it has all of 5 characters but it's just zany action from start to finish and it's quite epic
Fishfreeek

I was going to watch lupin at one point but it has sooo many episodes, I watched one of the movies ad thought it was good but I tend to stay away from animes that have over 52 episodes because I get bored of them after a while and drop them. If you still think I should give it a go then I guess I could but it would have to be very good for me to watch it all the way through.
And Forti, Ive actually done that befor on a diffrent site but most of the animes it showed Id either already watched or were not very good

the creator was certainly not on crack, people just don't understand Gainax's work and this was easily the most straight forward of anything they've made

I think it's more of 50/50...because I watched some in english today after playing with the box that it came in cause it's different from the others I have and the dubs are quite ehh...then again after you watch something all in japanese just watching english dubbing is mostly horrid due to VA's cant blend their mood into characters
abyssion1337
06-19-2010, 04:08 AM
that's not really true, while I recognize that over half of the dubs out there are just clearly worse than the sub, I'd say about 35% are on equal footing withe the sub and 5% surpass the sub

Jazean, I believe you are looking for Inukami (ann link) (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6077). Here's the opening (YouTube) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGK3UKEoT5U) with those scenes. I haven't watched it so I can't really comment on it.
i hevent watched ss-cry-ed but my mate says its crap (might give it a go nao though) meh, thanks anyway guys
I really wasn't interested in scryed, but a friend recommended it to me. I waited and watched an episode or two but really wasn't impressed, but I eventually sat down and watched it with someone and it surprised me a little. Somehow I ended up being sucked into it and ended up enjoying it. I can't really defend it and say with a straight face that it's absolutely not crap, though. I can say my expectations were low going into it, but I ended up enjoying it and finishing it. (Granted, this was a while ago, and the company may have helped) Thus, if you don't have anything else in mind, or don't have something that is higher rated by most people, then its probably worth a shot just to see.

sure, no problem.
Let me preface this with stating that these probably won't help but I'll mention them in case someone else was interested, there's a small chance that School Rumble might be interesting, but I doubt it, someone needs to confirm that as not enough focus on those types of characters.
When I think of Cute Bruisers it's always shows with girls and involve quite a bit of fighting... One I do NOT recommend for her based on her question, but that has less fighting than the others I'm thinking of:
Stella from Arakawa Under the Bridge ^_^; Her introduction is here starting at 1:47
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNiLoZBTmoo#t=1m47s
(3:55 leads up to the video below)
Skip straight to the pwnage if you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGtTe0TyPUI
She's an attention whore that needs to be on top, and NOT the passive type that "stays nice, but can be mean if needed". That's her sole purpose as a character in the show, so it's really not what she's looking for, especially when placed next to Ouran and Honey. She falls more under the "Deliberately Cute Child (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeliberatelyCuteChild)" trope. There's a cho marisa esque version of her later on, and another non-'cutesy' but unexpected character that I won't mention as to avoid spoiling the discovery. There are plenty of other shows with similar female characters, I'm not sure I remember ones with males that didn't focus on fighting.
------
Again, I doubt this is what she's looking for but the first thing that popped into my head
(that wasn't really far off) but it's another one that's been tagged with 'Cute Brusier'. I've only watched maybe 3 or 4 episodes but maybe School Rumble?
I shouldn't be making the recommendation, but am throwing it out just in case since it looks like there are a few minor characters that might fit. Someone else should comment on it and tell us it doesn't fit at all, as I suspect.) It might be too much fighting, but someone else will also need to provide details on that. Not really near Ouran's type of show either even if it is school comedy. (Even if the cute bruisers are minor characters, people say if you like Ouran you may also like School Rumble.)
There's a small bit of "Crouching Moron Hidden Badass (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass)" in the stoic/quiet character Oji Karasuma, but I'm not sure that's played with much (and the character isn't an idiot from what I know, but is unexpected to be able to defend himself very well).
And not a male, but Cute Bruiser type from it is Karen Ichijou:
"Cute girl with scary strength. Has a younger brother Kousuke." "Cute Bruiser - Not that she's the only fighting girl in the series, but she pretty much defines the trope, at least here.
Apparently also similarly: "School Rumble's Imadori is a pure Rule Of Funny example. She looks like any other girl, but in her hands, pianos and sofas look like they weigh almost nothing, chopsticks can stop a fork from stabbing someone and apples can be juiced."
I loved Ouran after getting several episodes into it. (Was first turned away by the concept of 'hey, next episode is physical examinations' but eventually came back and boy was I glad I did.) School Rumble, I watched a little since a friend liked it, but I didn't get into it at first, and haven't given it a chance since. Still, plenty of people seem to like it so my word shouldn't be taken on that one.
------
blah blah, If I actually remember something useful I'll be sure to stop by and mention it here.
You might also look at shows with ObfuscatingStupidity (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ObfuscatingStupidity) and try to find a cute character.
Which again not what you are looking for, but that's partly a similar type of character, but that one is usually the more serious/devious type. And not always cute...
But that leads to the overall stereotype: If you don't absolutely need the 'Bruiser' aspect: this list might be good to look through:
"Cute Shotaro Boy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CuteShotaroBoy)"
edit: oh~ I didn't watch but one episode of this, but take a look at: Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, maybe? Hittman Reborn came to mind before but it just sounded like it would have mostly fighting, but may be cute. These last two aren't recommendations for something I know would be good to watch, but included as something that may be worth looking into to see if they might be appealing.
-------------------------------
And, to randomly throw out titles that might apeal to people that liked ouran, even though the titles may not be similar, or contain a Honey like character:
(in a semi-orderer list)
Hetalia - Axis Powers: 52 short 5min episodes "described as a 'cynical gag' story set in Europe ..., using exaggerated caricatures of the different nationalities as portrayed by a gaggle of bishounen boys. For example, the Italia Veneziano character is into pasta and women. The Deutsche (German) bishi loves potatoes and sausages, and Nippon is an otaku boy. ... The manga's title comes the Japanese words for 'useless' (hetare) and Italy (Italia)." :3
Honey and Clover: comedy, drama, romance. prety good but may require slightly more experianced audience. (thrown in for the hell of it) It gets reasonably serious at times. (oh god I hate the viz english dub trailer, don't get me started)
Special A: school romances and comedy for students at the top of their school. (not about masks as Kare Kano was for the main characters) good but maybe not amazing, depends on if you get into it.
Kaichou wa maid sama: similar to Specal A in a few ways but newer, reasonably well done so far. (probably recommended as better than Special A)
Just a misc list of things that might be interesting if she hasn't watched them. It's really just throwing a few things out without any sense of connected theme.

Yes, thanks Spider, it was interesting to read your post. Well made article about Cute Bruiser type characters. Im actually starting to believe that youre one of the tvtropes.org authors XD
And Honey from Ouran really reminds me Chopper from One piece. They both are kind and sweet 95 % of time, but then needed mutates into unstoppable killing machines.
Actually after watching Ouran Ive started to compare its characters with others from multicharacter shows. For example:
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/3188/ourancrew.gif
It would be interesting to compare Ouran with Hetalia. I guess Japan from Hetalia would resemble Honey from Ouran the most :P
