I decided to do this research out of curiosity and because there has been so much debate.


History:

Rules:

The Rules have been developed by combination of community standard and by the creator (acutekat) of the thread. [mentioning acutekat instead of smeegs because it was his idea originally and smeegs seems to have disappeared while acutekat makes some appearances/is around]

RULE # 1-The only rule is that no matter what is posted it is counted. (This is to prevent combo breaking and to keep track of count.)

(It is usually considered considerate to post the next actual number and is usually considered trolling if you do not (depending on circumstances) it is not actually in the “Rules” that you have to post the next number)

By acutekat in board 2:
“its actually alot easier to keep track of than you think it just the post count + 13544”

By Useful in board 4:
“Combo breaking therefore doesn't work: even if you try to get off topic, your posts will simply be tacked onto the count, whether or not you posted the right number or even posted a number at all.”


How to count:

Sum of all previous posts + post your going to make = current count

Posts from board 4 = Look at the postcount of the post above yours.

So your number will be: (board 1 Posts)+(board 2 Posts)+(board 3 Posts)+(PostCount of post person above you)+(1 more for your magic number)
=13544+1536+1608+(Above PostCount)+1
=16688+(Above PostCount)+1

Don't understand why your using the above persons post count? Well an alternative way of looking at it is: (board 1 Posts)+(board 2 Posts)+(board 3 Posts)+(PostCount of your post)
=16688+PostCount


Difference Between PostCount and Replies:

-see Known Misconceptions 2
-When not in a thread REPLIES= number given under replies
-PostCount=the number at the top right hand corner of each post
Replies=PostNumber-1 (minus 1 because of original post is postnumber '1' but does not count as a reply)
PostNumber=Replies+1


Side Note: There are 15 posts per page.

I've looked through thousands and thousands of posts and over a thousand different pages.
I've been around before these threads even started.
If doing research of your own you will notice that the count is almost always wrong.
JohnnyB debates actual count with MADEVIL starting at page 913 board 4 (http://amvhell.com/showthread.php?t=2403&page=913) it continues for quite a few pages (JohnnyB is correct).


Known Misconceptions


Just because every is posting a certain number does not mean its correct.

If you look outside of a thread it will give you the following information: Thread/Thread Starter; Rating; Last Post; Replies; Views. The Replies from this view is how many people replied to the topic (easy right?) BUT if you go into a thread each post is given a postcount (1-#####) because this starts at 1 (and not 0). eg if there are 10 replies they will be PostCount 2-11. PostCount 1 is reserved for the original message (by the creator of the thread).

They did not have a PostCount to go by in the first few boards so its not as easy to keep track of count.

Useful's first post on board 4(http://amvhell.com/showthread.php?t=2403) is actually wrong. The last Post in board 3(http://amvhell.com/showthread.php?t=1378&page=108) is actually by Useful because of the one and only rule this post is counted so actually his post should be 1 more than what he posted

Replies and PostCount are the SAME (THIS IS NOT TRUE @see Difference between PostCount and Replies )



Wall of Shame (for count to million threads)

abyssion1337: (Reason)- For being a 'troll' on the first board and constantly purposely trying to mess up the count (during the first ~80 pages)

MADEVIL: (Reason)- Being mean, a troll, spreading lies about count number, ignorance when people explain how the count is wrong, and being a dick to people trying to correct the count. In board 4 around the 9xx.
