after the beginning of the amv mini series I noticed on how many people torrent more than purchase an anime and would like to try a survey of your percent of purchasing and torrent
example for me about 55% purchase and 45% torrent...face it dvd quality pwns subs but torrents beat empty wallet

i used to torrent (but can' t where i am) but if i enjoyed the series (or enjoying at the time of license) then it will be purchased.....cause i have a hell of a time actually watching stuff i bought that i hadn't watched ahead of time XD
but otherwise instead of "torrent" - i'd say "download" hmm....
kinda hard to make a percentage when i do buy something i might have already previously torrented (downloaded)....but i'd guess 15% download 85% purchase..but i'm starting to not but subbed only licenses...waist of ****ing money when the download is just as good (aside from clean op/ed and removing the subs to make amvs) XD

A vast majority of what I watch is torrented, even if it's already been translated I try to hunt for subs anyway. This is mostly because I find the English translations lacking in most cases or just plain weird.
If more money was in my pocket, purchase would be higher on my priorities, but right now it boils down to "Purchase Games, Torrent Anime."

full dvd-torrents maybe?
and I torrent for many reasons. I buy music and games rarely if I really like them and they're somewhat affordable. (and have the english version, which is even more rare.)

I purchase. Always. I've had enough bad experiences with downloading to never, ever do it again. Plus, I don't have the patience to wait for a high quality episode to get onto my harddrive. And if my effing computer dies, it's gone forever and the process starts all over. T_T
I'm a lucky bastard though, cuz I live in an awesome spot where my library catalogue carries all sorts of anime. So if I have an idea for a Minis clip or a full on AMV, it's just a few mouse clicks away . When I get the money, I just buy them anyway, so no harm, no foul and a happy wallet.

Oh I definitely download over purchase XD
Well I mainly don't have the time nor money to purchase anime, that and here they don't have that many stores which specialise in em so I just download em and then I'll see when I purchase the thing on DVD or Blu-ray
As for percentages go ehm...100% download versus 0% purchase :P

Torrents are bad. I rarely use them.
DC++ is much more useful if youre not searching something very new or rare. Also its a effective way to find good AMVs.

Well yeah, thats one of the main disadvantages of torrents and especially DC++. To use it, you must have powerful antivirus + several HDD partitions + reinstall Windows often (5-7 times per year) + always backup your files to CDs. Pirate's life is not so jolly and careless as it is shown in One Piece. You must do boring pirate stuff too.

Demonoid has great torrents (I'm still careful, but bugs and viruses appear non-existent in a vast majority of their torrents.), but requires registration to download torrents from them and registration tends to only open up for a few days once every year or so.

yeah but Demonoid's stuff ends up on everyone else's torrent list so it hardly matter

neither, too poor to purchase(dont know how anyone has the money to do that) and torrents take too long to find just for 1 goddamn 10-30 second scene =/
EDIT: i can only afford to buy 2 dollar VHS tapes of anime at the local thrift store(if they have any)

I usually just bought dvds for amvs that I was working on, or for anime that I really liked. I have over 100 anime dvds, but I haven't really bought any in the past 5 years or so, because I don't really watch anime anymore.

i have never had to reinstall windows due to a virus i got from torrenting anime. aind i have dowloaded over 1TB of it.... and i still have all of it. im very careful of what i download. i always check the contents of the torrent before i get it. and try to stay with the same encoding and torrent groups. as for waiting. i dont have a problem waiting for a dl to finish. it still takes less time to dl that it does to get the time and money to buy it. and if it is and exceptionaly long anime like One Piece, ill download the file in prioritized sections. setting the earlier episodes at the highest priority. that way once i finish that section the next is ready to go.

Well I have never encountered a virus who spreads via video files too. If you want to meet some - download a bunch of cracked software from free torrent sites.

dude I have downloaded a bunch of cracked software from free torrent sites, and you know what, I've only ever had 1 virus bad enough for me to need to reinstall windows and that wasn't even from torrenting. I can only assume that you're not running any antivirus software

Wow, what a direct admission of being a hardcore pirate XD
However we're talking about tendencies, so your alone experience means very little. Viruses and advertising bots are common supplement to torrent files. If you don't believe it - read serious internet forums were people are discussing about p2p security. Also I was talking about both - torrents and DC++.
And talking about my personal experience - I have downloaded this friend together with torrent files couple years ago. Reinstalling Windows was futile. I had to format both of my harddrives to get rid of him:

It is actually faster for me to buy an anime than to download it. I am currently downloading a certain 95 episode series and its taking me 3 months so far.
The area I live in's network is so congested that I only get a 30 kB/s speed when I should have 256 kB/s. And the ISP wont do anything. Yes my ports are forwarded and opened up and utorrent is exempted from the Windows Firewall as well as AVG.
I also have to limit my own speed down to 5 kB\s on the weekends because my moms boyfriend is a WoW addict and gets cranky when he cant play it.

Hope it's not too assuming of me to ask who or what that's a shot at.
As much as I'd like to own the DVDs, it's damn near impossible to find them where I live (as in, I've yet to prove the existence of Anime DVDs in my country), so I torrent them.

I'm sorry, but no. Torrenting from the MAIN sites (i.e.: BakaBT (formerly known as Boxtorrents), Demonoid, etc.) is almost risk free, as I've NEVER got a virus from a torrent I've downloaded. Plus, I'm more likely to actually get a virus from a phish (what a nightmare that was...), and that computer had zippo antivirus. This one, though, uses Microsoft Security Essentials and it hasn't run better (of course, hat's without TuneUp, in which case, I'd be pumping here).

as to torrent vs purchase on quality. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the Japanese language will tell you that fansubs are strictly better. The people who do fansubs actually care about the show itself and try to have the highest quality possible vs the corporations that just try to spit out dvds in the most cost efficient way possible which means ****ty yellow block fonts, not enough quality control on the translations, and no subs on OP and ED.
I torrent everything and buy my favorites, like I have copies of Elfen Lied, all the Miyazaki films, Ghost in the shell , Outlaw Star, Cowboy bebop, and about 20 others. it just costs too much money to buy a dvd just to try the series out. a 3 episode dvd of most recent shows costs about $25. thats just nuts.
as for the one crash and everything is gone issue. do what I do. I download the series and burn them onto data dvds. you can fit most if not all of a show one one or two dvds and then you dont have to worry about your hard drive. I have about 400 complete series in dvd binders on my shelf.

Yeah Diclonius, Funi actually does a really good job with their DVD releases, it's as if they almost care about anime and culture; oh wait they do having only censored 1 release in recent memories and as far as I can tell if was for legal reasons. And don't tell me that crap about fansubers, a lot of them seemingly don't care especially speedsubbers who just want to release episodes as quickly as possible: you'd have to be watching something done by 4kids to get lower quality than that
