Hey, I was just trying to get a feel for this new Hi10p thing these fansubbers are starting to use more and more of. I like the idea behind it, better quality anime at a lower file size. However, my computer is low end, running an AMD Athalon 64 TF-20 processor and Ati Radeon HD3200 Graphics, it seems that the better quality stuff is just out of my reach.

Anyways, I wanted to see if anybody likes Hi10p, and stuff...

I pretty much only watch 480p files due to my computer's poor specs. In fact, I usually have to convert files to be playable on my PSP or PS3 for technical reasons.

Well, if its better, whats not to like? The only problem is as you said, if your pc cant handle it...

Yes, I love it also.
I had some strange display issues at first, then I realized how out of date my CCCP was.
I updated it and now it looks better than ever.

EDIT: Also, a lot of fan-subers release different resolutions and quality.
So I don't see the problem.

Depending on the encode and what your using to play it you can get by using DXVA to do the video decoding and take the load off the cpu. My old HD3850 supported h264 decoding on the card I would assume yours could too.

DXVA saved my ass on an old AMD 3200+ socket 754 at 2.22Ghz

Ohh and as for CCCP they keep ****ing the default settings around every release so it might have DXVA enabled by default now ( It wasnt in the past ).

I believe that even with a crap PC, while using VLC Media Player you can watch Hi10p videos with minimal CPU usage. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well from a bland point you will not get a 1080p regardless of format to soft decode smoothly on a single core (overlay subs add hell into that mix) without any modification or change in decoder although a good ol' overclocked P4 "Could" pull it off.

Too bad Hi10p hasn't made a significant difference in the quality of anime nor has it made a significant difference in file size.

I'm pretty sure media player beats VLC's ass in terms of the playback department.

I had a horrible experience trying to watch avatar on my computer with it when was on 512 RAM.

I did manage to get the minis to play on an old Panasonic toughbook with a 399mhz mobile celeron and 128mb of ram using core AVC as the decoder in MPC, It was pretty cute XD

Wow, so much of this is going over my head.

The new Flash compression is almost better. DVD quality for about 120mbs per ever 90 minutes.

Yes, the file size is only 20% smaller at the same quality setting. Not significant at all.

I don't really worry about video quality above 720p because my laptop can't handle 1080p and I use my tv as a monitor for my desktop and my v is just a small 720 set.

I've never had any trouble running high res files on any of my computers, even my old 1ghz p3 runs them fine
