I hope I don't offend anyone by asking this.....what's Lent? :O

How is that an offensive question? Anyway, this is Lent (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent)

Don't ask me. I'm not the one who gets offended by these questions :| Some people are just REALLY sensitive, I guess.

Despite what you believe in, when you die you will find out if you were right or wrong. For those extremely religious people I hope you are wrong so when you die you just see black until your brain runs out of oxygen then you don't know whats going on and that's that.

I give up Lent for Lent, because I do not need some stupid idealistic view telling me to give something up for awhile, when I can do it any time in the year, without designating a time for it.

I already gave up something for the month of February, so no need to do it again for a longer period of time lol

Religion is bull****, there are some good ideas to be found but they've been perverted over time by people. Many of the worst things people have ever done to each other have been in the name of religion, even when doctrine teaches the opposite.

"He still digs humanity, but it bothers Him to see the **** that gets carried out in His name - wars, bigotry, televangelism. But especially the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and, like always, built a belief structure on it."

"Having beliefs isn't good?"

"I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier..."

prolly one reason i like japan, the either dont really follow a religion, or theirs arent that bad. heck, shinto religion has no holy book or church; just an appreciation for all their gods, which all come from nature lol

Eastern religions tend to be (but aren't necessarily) more based in philosophy than western ones.

Used to give stuff up for Lent even after I stopped following the Catholic tradition then I figured there was no point to it. I consider myself a Christian. But I'm more of a mystic spiritualist than a traditional Christian. I also prefer Catholic/Lutheran/Anglican/Episcopalian style services than most others just because of the service structure. The truth is though I really don't feel that you have to go to church on a regular basis.

exactly my way of thinking x3 im Christain too, but dont go to church as well. i feel if you do good things in life, then that should be enough to gain entrance into heaven [though i believe more in reincarnation lol]

so you are saying a religion needs to cater to your way of life? What is the point of a religion then?

i just feel awkward saying that i dont have a specific religion, or that i'm a christain, but doesnt fully follow it, or that i have mixed religious beliefs. the topic of religion is something i dont like to talk about normally to begin with. in fact, if a girl is overly religious [as in, talks about it a decent amount], its a big time turn-off for me.

I was a bit pissed at my friends moms funeral when the preacher started going in to a whole thing to recruit people, that was uncalled for, we we're there to honor someone in death. I found it wrong to play on peoples emotions at that time to win them over to religion.

I believe in converting people the way Jesus said to. By acting like a somewhat decent person and encouraging people to be the same way. Christ didn't really do the whole fire and brimstone thing he used decency.

I have been legally dead twice, once was 27 seconds another was 40 seconds and there was nothing. No lights, no darkness, just nothing left on my brain other than extreme cold in one instance and laying down in another. So thinking that there is something when you are dead is just preposterous to me.

ill agree with nodman , in my younger days i used tobe hardcore realist, the thing is its already prooven that religin is bull**** , ppl used to think earthquakes and thunder were works of god? so why does it still egzist? fear. ppl are afraid of death and want to use any means nesasery to survive, you could say hitler became immortal cause teachers still cram him into retarded children continuining his egzistance and never forgoten.reincarnation, children, or simply shoving medicine in panic for hopes to live.many ways which one of them chistians hold the idea that they will still LIVE but in heaven

I a belong to no religion, however I believe in some sort of "divine" force as some there is some forces I believe science cannot account for, and my own human fears of death makes me want more than just the cold embrace of death and that being it. Whether said force or being (Whome I will refer to as Providence Deus) is actually "GOD", an Eldritchian Horror or what have you, I believe there is some force out there greater than us mortal men. I believe there is SOMETHING after death, whether it be reincarnation, Heaven, Hell, Instrumentality, etc. what have you.

I personally find organized Religion to be a sham nowadays, not all religion is an evil force, but most get corrupted and lose their meaning. While organized religion has done some good things for society, but also it's done horrendous actions all the same. And my one time I went to Church (with my former GF) I was absolutely DISGUSTED by the blind belief and idiocy spewed from the preacher, and Kids no more than six doing Hellfire Rants is as disgusting as one can get. Hell, Hellfire Preacher's in general are corrupted by various amounts of dumbassery.

While I feel Religion isn't inherently bad, it has degenerated into something that isn't good for progress....I'm looking at you GOP!

Oh when I meant good passing, I didn't mean it that, but you know as in have your traditions go well like Passover in April. In that sense but interesting near death experience your sharing, my friend in Riverside had like that once he described it the sameway you did.
