hi i decided to try a new thread.
i'm not sure if this kind of thread has been done before.
the idea of this thread is for other users(if any) like me have a hard time understaning the in's and out's of computer speak.

so if you have a computing question you can ask it here.

so i'll start.
rumours have it that the wii u will have a full gig of ram this is apparently 4x bigger than the ps3 and twice that of the 360.

so heres my question
how much of a difference does the size of ram make to the effiencey of your computer or games console?

Couldn't you have just used Google for this? (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+much+of+a+difference+does+the+size+of+ram+m ake+to+the+effiencey+of+your+computer+or+games+con sole%3F+)

Anyway, RAM basically impacts processing speed. The more RAM, the faster the device runs. So in other words, shorter loading times, more detailed graphics, and the freedom to make bigger levels, more or less.

i did use google but i couldn't find the answer in terms i could understand.
it mentioned more things like how the ram interface with the cpu.

so i got confused and decided to make this thread.

i 'm sure i'm not the only person whos fought erm i wonder waht that means googled it then gone.
omg i understand lt less than i did before i googled it.

p.s thanks.

i read ram is kinda like tempery memory it only excists while the device is active is right?

Essentially, yes. Wikipedia provides more info if you're still curious about RAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random-access_memory), though it's not really written in Layman's Terms, so it'll take a bit of deciphering, more than likely.

thanks for the link i'll have ago at understanding it.
i guess i won't learn anything if i don't try.

oh that does sound like a better name.
since your a mod do you have the power to change the name of a thread.

yes please mad.
that way it shouldn't get mixed up with sheds thread.

thankyou.

so it'll be called infomation technology for noobs?

That did not make a lick of sense to me XD... I suggest re-reading what ram exactly is and how its utilized.

"640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates

Doesn't the fact that I suggested Google sort of prove that I was denying my credibility?

Here's the legend: at a computer trade show in 1981, Bill Gates supposedly uttered this statement, in defense of the just-introduced IBM PC's 640KB usable RAM limit: "640K ought to be enough for anybody."
Funny he'd say that, that statement was true at the time but has since become very obsolete.

How can you say you need more ram if you already have 640k?

it's great i'm still no closer to knowing how ram works or what it is i had ago at understanding the wiki link but it still didn't clarrify anthing for me.

RAM: Stands for random access memory; refers to memory that the microprocessor can read from and write to. When you create something in memory, it’s done in RAM. Does that kind of help jinzo?

kinda thanks for trying to help.

okay how much of difference will 1 gig of ram make compared to 256 mega of ram

The way I imagine it is that ram is a buffer- to perform complex procedures like playing a game with heavy graphics, the computer needs a space where it can store and retrieve large chunks of pertinent information very quickly. The traditional hard-drive (as opposed to flash drives) isn't nearly as fast as ram which is plugged directly into the motherboard and doesn't need to spin and find data in that kind of mechanical way, instead ram stores information electrically, which is why when you turn off the computer anything that was stored in ram (like everything you were typing in Word without saving to the hard-drive) is lost. Not erased, but lost because the info is held only in the charge.

That's just how I imagine it, and it's probably technically wrong on many points.

well more will make a difference if the system is designed to make use of it, gives it more room to work

i'd like to thank both of you i think i have a better understanding of ram.

oh heres somthing interesting about the animal the ram is that the black ones are also referred to as gonad sheep because apparently they will bite or man parts.

Analogies make this fun.

Your cities main water supply comes from a small lake but the lake isn't above the floodplain so it has issues with low water pressure when everyone in the city is taking a **** making the water pressure severely drop to an unusable level. To alleviate this problem your city decides to over tax you to the point of poverty to install a brand new pump house complete with a 4mil gallon watertower. Watertower fixes this low pressure problem by allowing gravity to do the work of supplying a limited amount of water at a decent pressure so everyone in city can take a **** with no interruptions with the flushing procedure.

Congratulations your RAM is a watertower XD

thanks for that to a certain degree it made quite a bit of sense to me.
