face it I do not own a console just a pc and a psp so I figured might as well toss in a forum for us games for buy/rent/pass; besides a good review is one from gamer to gamer instead of paycheck to gamer
example:
Mimana: Iyar Chronicles
System: PSP
Pros: voiced cutscenes, anime cutscenes, basic rpg, easy to follow story, OST has answering machine for each character which adds humor, characters are well designed and played, just main story and no sidequesting which is a pro in my book due to good to sit down and play instead of running back and forth in towns to get that title or hidden item
Cons: not worth the 40 bucks it's sold for, about 20 hrs long, soundtrack is only 18 mins long, dungeons are easy to get lost in and the puzzles make you do circles a lot, run into a random ecounter about every 3-5 seconds, spells in battle are easy ways to have enemies get a free hit on you, to get from point to point you have to walk the same trails over and over
Personal rating of the game: B-
overall the cons of the game it is still a good rpg to just sit down and play but just not to buy for your own or atleasted a new copy
Answer: rent
I mean if you want to you can even use this page to ask about games you are wanting to buy in the future; since most review sites are basicly going this game is good and this game is bad without really explaining why
so Transformers: war on cybertron...should I buy it for my pc or borrow it from a friend?

System Shock 2 (PC):
Before 'Bioshock', 'Doom 3', 'Dead Space' or even 'Run Like Hell', there was...System Shock 2.
Pros:
Epic, twisted, story.
Atmosphere horror as part of the 'game play'. (Like Silent Hill)
Solid game play and decent music.
Fan made 'update' to graphics.
Cons:
It's a FPS...low blow?
But, it's also a FPS that's trying to be a Third-Person Action/Adventure Horror/Mystery.
Graphics, and even much of the sound, is dated. Not for the 'OMG BLOOM EFFECT crowed, at all.
Fan made update, at least for me, crashes a bit much.

ok time for me to make some comments, everyone brace yourselves
It's not bioshock 3 that's coming out, it's a prequel and given the game's lore there might *might* be some merit to it
System Shock 2, you're wrong, horror/mystery games can be a lot better in first person mode, just check out anything Frictional games has made. Also without nostalgia factor the game is a solid A+ finally, there's nothing wrong with an FPS, I just don't like most of them because they're all generic as though FPS devs are afraid of innovation.
Halo: Reach, I couldn't care less about this game, the halo series had a kinda cool first game after that they started to suck, it's also the prime example of how stupid microsoft really is (seriously a game that popular and it doesn't even get a pc port, what the **** is wrong with your marketing department)
FO3, terrible game, the balance is wacky and it's in no way as good as the first two, particularly FO2. some of the in game lore makes no sense, FO3 couldn't possibly take place when they say it does and the game is so empty. I'll admit I've spent quite some time on it and like oblivion it becomes quite a bit of fun once you add about 4 to 10 gigs of mods to the game.

I have FO3 with all the DLC and I can say that its deffinately fun, but not addicting enough. dont get me wrong, its a great game and everything, the DLC makes up for a lack of plot, but I have lost some interest, and my gaming laptop leaves a bit to be desired.
HALO: Reach is an awesome game, cant be denying reach over here. I have yet to play it but I have more than enough input on it. the only thing it could be lacking is the Single Player, but I dont think its much of a lack.
personaly Im a PC gamer, I dont own a console, and I always lean more toward PC if I did.

if you haven't actually played Halo: Reach then you really can't say much about it, as such I have a friend who loves his 360 and I did play a little (under duress) and I have to say, I never cared for Halo's multiplayer (except the first one when I was younger and stupider) and the part anyone should be caring about is the single player, which almost makes up for halo's 2 and 3. I'm also a pc gamer.

how many of you keep up regularly with multiple gaming news inputs? if you did you would know more about the excellent variety of good games vs bad games through reviews. Im not accusing any of you for anything, I just think that you guys dont get enough input to call a game that you dont have a winner or loser.

that's an incredibly foolish sentiment, reviewers for the most part have incredibly low standards and will say a game is fine as long as 1 thing stands out to them, it's because ultimately they're selling games to people who only see games as toys and not as something that can be so much more profound. I might be opinionated but at least I'm not full of crap.
I have to say I agree with darkzi, but not for the reason he stated, more that the reason he listed is a byproduct of the real reason and that's simple: the xbox was made for non-gamers, they essentially formed a whole new tier of casual gamer, those who played what was closer to actual games unlike those silly puzzle games popcap churns out, but still without the same amount of depth, a group of people who assign value to graphics and how well they show the mindless violence and gore they so crave. This was successful because of how much this demographic outnumbers actual gamers, companies have found them that much more profitable so they just focused on that; of course this leads to all the games like the modern warfare 2, where there's an incredibly ****ty single player campaign and a laughably unbalanced multiplayer so poorly crafted you can almost see it falling apart. Conversely let's take a brief look at valve: Half-Life 2, probably the best shooter ever made and many would say game ever made (though I'm not so presumptuous) it only had a single players campaign and it was extremely well crafted in every possibly way. On the other side we have Counter-Strike, because the game only had a multiplayer it was well crafted in a different way; the game was extremely balanced giving both teams an equal chance of winning. Of course there's a third part that works in favor of both games, their community support, both have rather strong mod communities that tend to churn out some pretty cool things (and some pretty stupid ones but you can always just not play them)

thats very well thought out.
i know the typical view is that cute, bouncy games like mario and wind waker are seen as casual games and that shooters or gory games are seen as hardcore.
but i believe if you play games as a main hobby and plays the games they like
me i play games to death especialy things like zelda got over 50 hours on a game with 30 hours of game play. a hardcore gamer looks for everything even if theres no trophy or achievment like in the days of the n64.
i think a casual gamer is someone who plays games for less than 10 hours a week. or bought a wii for wii fit.

wow did I miss out as for my thoughts on the matters:
Metroid other M: Team Ninja made good mechanics that really brought the fighting to life, and the game looked great. The story and characterization was worse than **** and for no real reason, people claim that it's team ninja's inability to write female characters but THEY DIDN't WRITE THE GAME, THE CO-CREATOR OF METROID DID: WTF. I mean they even managed to get Adam's character wrong and he was only in Metroid Fusion... as a computer.

Persona 1:
Great game, but a bit dated. The PSP port/remake makes it so playing the original PS1 version is only for the retard or nostalgic.
It's genuinely creepy and very 'old school JRPG' in the battles and feel of the overall game.
It's got that 'gothic' feel that you don't really see outside of games like 'Blood Omen'.
Persona 2 - Part 1:
Sequal to P1.
Good game, fixed lots of battle/music gripes from P1. The story is weird, and, not your typical 'Pretty people save the world from some emo kid with a big sword' crap.
Persona 2 - Part 2:
While never officially getting a an English release there is a fan-translation that probably better than P1 & P2p1's 'official translation' (and it's easy enough to convert to an eboot).
Continues the story which, for me, can get really 'Metal Gear Solid' convoluted is worth the weird ride towards the end.
It also updated graphics/game play/music, however...might be a bit dated by today's standards.
Persona 3:
The first 'mainstream' Persona game has little/nothing to do story wise with the original games, and is very 'JPop'.
The music is great, the battle system is so much more fluid, and I personally loved the story.
Only issue with the game is the AI...really stupid sometimes.
Persona 3 - FES:
Continues the story of P3 and adds loads of new stuff like Persona, equipment, difficulty settings, and...as stated previous a new story mod that fixes/officially ends the story in P3 via a tale from Aigis' point of few.
However, 'The Answer', Aigis' story, is basically a turn-based dudgeon crawler...which is kind of a shame.
Persona 4:
Again, pretty much a standalone story.
Takes place in a small town where you get to go inside a TV and 'solve murder mysteries'.
While I love P3 for bringing me back into JRPGs, P4 has a superior battle system (no more AI controlled units...unless you want them) and an overall more socially relevant & mature story that keeps you playing.
One thing that more of a nit-picking than anything else is the 'yellow' of it all.
I hate yellow, and the MC looked a bit too dorky for my taste.
Beyond that, it really is a better game to P3 in terms of dudgeon's actually changing depending on who/what you're going after.
However, some of the puns are really un-bear-able.
Persona 1 Portable:
Taking everything good about P1 and giving it fresh paint is all good. From the removal of 'black-face' to the addition of 'The Ice Queen' this is an old school JRPG's fan dream come true.
This game is hard, at times a grindfest, and features some of the best 'gothic' looking rpg elements in any game I've played.
While it moves away from the 'lets date to gain powers' crap of the never Persona games, it updates it's 'bribe a demon/monster to help you in battle or join your side or run away or give you an item'...a very weird, very cool, game play element.
Persona 3 Portable:
Missing FES kind of hurts it, I think. However, all the rest seems to be here.
While lots of the anime cut-scenes got cut, the core of the game is here...WITH A NEW PATH TOO BOOT!
Adding in the combat improvements of P4 & an added story mode that allows you to play as a female (which was a bit awkward became I'm a male and all) really makes this THE JRPG to play on the PSP.
---------------------
TL;DR?
Persona 3:FES (PS2)
Persona 1 Potable (PSP)
Persona 2: Part 2 (PS1)
Persona 4 (PS2)
Persona 3 Portable (PSP)
Persona 2: Part 1 (PS1)
Persona 1 (PS1)
Persona 3 (PS2)

Kira2521
09-20-2010, 02:57 PM
Got P3P, played through both stories and it was great. And if you play the female story you get a choice in the velvet room whether to have Elizabeth or some guy named Theodor. They edited some of the story points in it pretty well i think, though the point in the story where the protagonist meets Aigis is a little disapointing but still good. In the male story you try to hit on her after Akihiko and Junpei and she runs away, in the female it's only Junpei and Akihiko who try to hit on her (and they still use the same lame pickup lines) then she suddenly turns around and runs in to the forest to find the female protagonist. It still ends in pretty much the same way thought, nothing different about the battle with Nyx.

Well..tactics is turn-based.
I guess if you're asking is it more like 'Final Fantasy Tactics' or 'Final Fantasy 9'.
It's more FF9.
It's not a series SRPG.
In the Persona games you collect demons/monsters to help you in battle as 'summons' and you can build up their levels and spells.
For Persona 3 you can build up your MC's attributes by various means, one being dating/friendships you form outside of battle.

It also has to do with the style.
If they move via squares, it's probably a SRPG.
If they don't move, except to attack/cast stuff, it's probably a JRPG.

Hexes are superior to squares in all games except SRPG games

Aliens Vs Predator (PS3 version)
Ok, first off the load times are a bit long, but that could be remedied by jailbreaking my PS3 and installing the game to the hard drive with backup manager. At this time, I have only played the Alien missions (since I prefer the Alien series over Predator), and they are difficult, first person stealth. The special attacks take too long to kill marines, its faster to do two heavy hits and they die, but it is easy to sneak around or even sneak up behind your enemies and get em.
Also, the game does have a signature sega visual style that is reminiscent of Sega Dreamcast, which is nice.
What really breaks it for me is the lack of the Atari Jaguar version of Aliens Vs Predator which is a very good game on a very ****ty console. But with the growth of the PS3 Homebrew scene in the last month, an Atari Jaguar emulator may be planned in the future.
I suggest you buy it.

ya what gets everyone is that it's the team that did the AVP games on pc not the other ones that is why it isnt like the atari version and such; though I addon that do not buy it for pc due to the NVIDIA driver issue that happens on the game so you have to play on lowest to play it or else it crashes constant; this also leads to barely anyone playing it online so once you beat the stories there is really nothing else you can do..so after 5 hrs you are done with it

Wasn't the NVIDIA thing patched?
I am sure the Consoles have fine online play, I wouldn't know because I am keeping my firmware at 3.41 so I can use my Jailbreak, and homebrew.
