I will start this thread off with a review of my last anime watched. Dog Days. 6/10
http://mon0r.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/dog-days-anime-promotion-with-qr-code.jpg
Story is rather simple, new princess of a kingdom is in trouble and summons a hero from another dimension to help fight the war that they have been losing, only the hero they summon is a middle school student and the war being fought is actually a giant game between nations to gain money by winning.
The Hero Sink (or sinque or shinku or tsink or however the hell you spell it because no one seems to agree on anything) is actually a boy training for a contest on earth strangely reminiscent of the Ninja Warrior contest, so he find himself perfectly prepared for a game such as this. Magic and weapons are used that can take the form of anything the user wants. No one dies during these contests but instead find themselves turning into furry balls.
http://www.denbeste.nu/Chizumatic/2011/Reviews/DD_03.jpg
Ball forms of the animals they are like cats, dogs, cows etc,
I'd like to think that if they made a game out of this, it'd be a pretty cool dynasty warriors game, especially since the named characters never seem to get turned into animal balls, but instead get battle damage via koei's Fist of the North Star game......their clothes come off
http://i1207.photobucket.com/albums/bb480/Yumekichi11/pictures%203/f59884db.jpg
While watching this, I feel like this would have been a show that I would have loved as a kid.
The show is lacking in impact though, even the serious moments don't actually feel like they are very important, and sometimes I feel like it was a joke.
The connection to the cast is almost non-existent until the second season, although it doesn't feel as forced as most shows I watch, it feels more innocent being that they are all fairly young and its not such a amorous relationship but more so just them having fun as youth. I mean hell the main character ends up treating the princess like he would a dog and scratches her ears and pets her head and such.
All in all the show is alright, nothing big, not terribly funny and i wouldn't say it sucked but it was definitely interesting enough to leave me wanting to see season 2.

Only season 2 will tell, and the rating is my personal zuii ranking. What does it mean? hell not even I know but some shows won't even have it like this one

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! (Please love me seriously)
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/MajiDeWatashiNiKoiShinasaifull971718.jpg
My main complaint about most shows is how they start, some just start off to slow or to overly narrated and scripted when I want a nice flowing introduction, I still haven't found a show where I felt it had a perfect opening episode, but this just totally threw me for a loop.
Episode starts off with a war with class 2s and 2f in a summoner tes........no wait wrong show, in a mock war with non-lethal weapons to finally end the year long bickering they have had.
The main character (Yamato Naoe The Strategist) is a guy who I can compare to being a overly perveted version of Keima (World God Only Knows) except her has a interest in girls and has a harem already buy the time you start watching the show.
Kazuko Kawakami: (aka wanko) Is a naginata user and is pretty much a dog girl type, Yamatos loyal pet ho HO
Miyako Shiina: The Archer, is balls ass crazy for the main character and openly confesses each and every day only to get shot down each time, her antics go from replacing all his porn mag models with pictures of her self, to just straight up tying him and in a attempt to rape him.
Yukie Mayuzumi: The swordsman, the second strongest of the group she is extremely awkward around others and has a imaginary friend that is her cell phone strap that she talks with in a perfect ventriloquism manner
Christiane Friedrich: The Foreigner/Fencer, she's all about justice and honor and loves japans culture, she hates yamatos devious ways and tactics but knows that he does them to protect those around him.
Momoyo Kawakami The heroine (aka Lu Bu): The strongest of the group and quite possibly the world, she is essentially the lu bu to this show and is overpowered to max she can heal from any wound instantly jump over a couple hundred feet in the air and can deflect bullets with her middle finger
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/36.jpg
In the show all the chicks do the fighting while Mr. strategist there, overlooks and gives them orders the war starts with them vastly over numbered 3 to 1 and with powerhouses on both sides victory seems quite impossible. Enter the strategist to break apart the enemy ranks (i'm enjoying this too much) he puts all his girls in key locations and has them attack accordingly, and along the way captures a enemy general and proceeds to spank her and upload the video to the internet using the cellphone so that the enemy soldiers will start to defect
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-09-17-22h25m22s169.png
it was in that moment that I decided to do my all nighter and watch the show in one siting, its a wild show, from a talking robot friend, to lightsabers popping out of his pants, to a candied dick festival complete with dick sword fights and a blowjob simulation
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-09-17-22h53m09s215.png

After watching the show to its completion I have to say I liked it (possibly mostly do to my dynasty warriors influence) but I most absolutely must warn you, to NOT watch it......yet
This show left me in confusion, I was greeted with all these side characters and classmates that just show up at random times with no introduction and it feels like i'm supposed to know who they are already.
I looked up this show before hand and already knew there was only 1 season and the more I watched the more I started to dread its 12 episode release.
At first I thought that maybe this is one of those mixed release animes where the episodes are aired out of order but that wasn't the case at all, you don't really miss much because the show focuses on the main characters mostly, but its when those side characters come out of nowhere that you just feel lost.
I held off on doing a review on this show to read the manga and as I thought, the show actually airs 3-4 books into the manga. The only way to actually know who or what some things are is to read the manga but here's the kicker, its not fully translated yet, only 21 chapters of it are and it seems like there are still about 10-15 more till you actually reach where the anime starts off at.
The show is based off a VN so you might be thinking that it'd be good to play that first, but the VN itself is only half translated
But I do wanna say that these things are not dead in the least, the latest chapter of the manga that was translated was done so last month and the patches for the VN are also over a month old so there is hope for this series. Only time will tell and I hate waiting ._.

If you do still feel like watching it, overall the show does have weird flaws that i rarely see, much like certain conversations dragging on for too long, like a part where he spends 1/3 the show trying to talk a girl in to letting him see her naked.
Things like that, the robot, and lack of character introduction make me yearn for those crappy ones I complained about.
But hell, I still like the show and will continue to watch over its life

Next up is a show getting a strange amount of hate
Haiyore! Nyaruko-san 6/10
Part 1
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-09-26-02h27m37s55.png
Quick summary, guy is being hunted down by monsters for some unknown reason and who comes to his aid? well no other than Nyarlathotep the strongest being in the cthulu mythos.
http://thecartdriver.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/HorribleSubs-Haiyore-Nyaruko-san-01-720p.mkv_snapshot_06.38_2012.04.11_11.28.40.jpg
First off I wanna address why everyone is not too pleased having gruesome tentacle like monsters turn into cute anime girls when I see it all the time on this little device called the internet. Granted this isn't the first time something like has happened (E.G. Ikki tousen) but I feel i'm less sensitive to these matters so I carry on. I don't really feel like much needs to be said about this show other than possibly one of my new favorite traps
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-09-11-23h02m56s63.png
He is possibly my main influence to keeping watching this show, give the poor boy your lap as a pillow you evil bastard.
all in all the show is alright, loads of anime references that gave me a chuckle and then shows me my age. but after watching this I watched the flash anime series that aired years before and in order to actually appreciate it you really have to watch at least the first 6 episodes of Haiyore. They are both fairly useless 1-2 episode shorts but at least one thing is answered in it and that is why cthuko wants nyaruko.
Will go into more details in another post soon

Its a almost century long debate right there, nyarl has always been hinted at being stronger than most the gods due to his experience and intelligence, while most of them are mindless and purely destructive nyarl is just a extremely evil bastard evil.
Main reason I wanted to make this a 2-part review was so I can post more pictures of my trap
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-09-12-02h17m44s193.png
So on to character descriptions
Mahiro Yasaka: The main character, he is oddly well skilled with a fork and uses it to punish people when they misbehave or anger him in any way. He is noted to be a exceptional cook and is good with kids
Nyarlko: She for some unknown reason is in love with the main character Mahiro and claims it to be love at first sight, she rescues him after he is first attacked by a monster and from then on vows to protect him from danger as it is her duty as a space cop thing person. she fights with a style called space CQC (quick note this show uses the word space alot) her fighting style mostly revolves around the brutal usage of weapons, slaughtering her opponents in a almost euphoric frenzy causing massive amounts of blood to splatter everywhere.
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/vlcsnap-2012-10-05-01h11m49s19.png
Cthuga: A fire deity and is said to be the sworn enemy of nyarlko, but for some reason she fell madly in love with her and is seeking to have a extremely lust filled relationship with her.
Her style of space CQC revolves around her using fire and summoning funnels oddly similar to char's sazabi in gundam. She is sometimes seen to be developing Slight feelings for Mahiro but she shrugs it off and her affection seems to be closer contributed to the fact the he feeds her and is a very good cook.
Hastur: A wind deity and is the arch rival of Cthulhu in the Cthulhu Mythos. A small looking boy that fell in love with mahiro from the kindness he showed him (possibly due to the fact that he thought Hastur was a girl). is noted to be extremely strong and is very oblivious to mahiro's rejections. He has also not been stabbed by mahiro

These are the shows I've watched recently that I can recommend

.Hack//Quantum
http://www.themousetrap.co.za/images/anime/001.jpg

OVA series, 3 episodes, that unlike Sign and Legend of the Twilight was enjoyable to watch. 3 friends play in the World with slightly different versions of the in-game characters you've seen in previous .Hack shows. Things turn sour when the girls tragically encounter an ingame entity that puts people into a coma in the real world. There's plenty of motion in the animation as well as a mix of 3D celshading for background characters and 2D for foreground. English voice acting was good, but the Cat character talks in a weak voice. Recommended for all.

Magica Madoka
http://www.themousetrap.co.za/images/anime/002.jpg

As if someone took the cast of Pretty Cure and put them in a show that was actually good. Turning the magical girl genre on it's head, Madoka is offered the chance to be a Magical girl, she's even told doing so, will make her the most powerful magical girl ever. However there's a hidden dark side and Madoka along with her friends have to come to terms with the psycological and moral results/suffering of their actions and wishes. Very good show, art-style is fairly unique in each scene, but animation goes a bit funny in places. The story is mature, in the "thinking" way as well as dropping moral lessons in each episode. Highly Recommended, just note in Episode 8 the language went hardcore XD

Highschool of the Dead 12 Episodes
http://www.themousetrap.co.za/images/anime/003.jpg

Boobs, Zombies, Violence, Gore. Sounds like your normal zombie setting, however, despite the massive flapping breasts, the show treats its zombie apocalypse very seriously, giving screen time to personal, group and global events. The animation is also very detailed and the direction of the show is such that neither the violence or self-aware cleavage gets in the way of the story. Don't watch the OVA, it's rubbish. Recommended to older viewers who aren't put off by walking dead or nudity. PS: Watch out for that one Teacher.

Angel Beats
http://www.themousetrap.co.za/images/anime/008.jpg

He's lost his memory and the girl with a sniper rifle tells him this High School they're in is the afterlife and he must fight "Angel" or face obliteration. Confused he goes and talks to "Angel" which ends badly. Realising he, as well as everyone else, can't die he joins "Whatevertheirnameisatthemoment Battlefront" to stop Angel. It's quite a nice show, with moments of comedy, seriously tragic backstory and touching moments. Recommended for all those who aren't offended by the semi-blasphamy (The club is out to Defy God because of their awful lives, beat a girl they believe is an angel and one guy comically demands he be called Christ). Othewise, you're set for a good time.

Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
http://www.themousetrap.co.za/images/anime/009.jpg

I haven't seen the series, but I think that turned out to be a good thing. Kon and the SOS brigade club are planning their Christmas party, or as Kon puts it, Haruhi does the planning and everybody gets dragged along. Next day however, everything has changed, basically TO normal, his friends have never heard of Haruhi, while the other characters from the club either don't know him or are missing. Also Kon sounds crazy, even to himself, when he tries to remind people about their fantasical adventures. Kon also didn't realize how much he'd miss Haruhi's "annoying plans" until she'd vanished. Recommended for all.

HOTD sucks. I can't figure out why people love that show. It's got no plot, no good characters, and not enough fight scenes with the zombies to justify their existence. It's like someone wanted to make a porn but decided to throw in zombies at the last moment. Actually, HOTD would have been better off as a porn, because then we wouldn't have pesky zombies getting in the way of our boobs. As it stands it's in the crossroads between hentai and zombie movie, with not enough attention paid to either, so it will satisfy neither crowd. It's a jack of two trades, master of none.

That's just it. It's so stupid and contrived, it's entertaining. I agree with you about the fight scenes, though. They needed more. As for the characters, I actually liked Hirano. Sure, he was pretty stupid at times, but at least he actually got around to doing some stuff and actually had a bit of characterization, unlike the rest of the retard cast. He did in the manga, at least. I do think the show is pretty overrated, though. I don't get why a lot of people act like it's a great show when it's obvious that it's pretty stupid and is the anime equivalent of an American exploitation film.

It's funny because the guy who wrote it actually made some hentai doujins in the past. He even used the design of one of his old characters as that newscaster from the episode where they were locked up in that apartment.

Well where does the anime go up to then (yes I've still got a long way to go)? The manga seemed to have an "idea" of a plot, with them trying to reach the pre-school which was turned into an Evac site, but of course it never happened because manga guy went and started on another manga called Triage X -of which he's done 4 volumes already. lol.

If I had to explain myself I guess I get an old "zombie movie" feel, like Dawn of the Dead era, with each location they get holed up in. Then at the same time they add in some stuff that makes some sort of sense, like launching nukes at "zombie hot spots" or attack choppers mowing down zombies to rescue those people in the mall.

Okay, let's get this **** started.

Turning the magical girl genre on it's head,

This your first magical girl show? They've always done dark/ pretentious ****. Whether it be subtly or just blatanly, it has always been there, despite the stereotype that faces it.

Very good show, art-style is fairly unique in each scene, but animation goes a bit funny in places.

Art-style, though subjective, is not even close to being anything worth mentioning. Even if you bring out cardboard cut-out witches, they were animation is comparible to something done in Adobe Flash, and when the animation wasn't outsourced, it was completely trash (Just like the rest of SHAFT's ****, but I digress.)

The story is mature, in the "thinking" way as well as dropping moral lessons in each episode. Highly Recommended, just note in Episode 8 the language went hardcore XD

No it isn't. The sooner that you man-children can get the simple concept that dark-'n-edgy =/= mature, the sooner society can get back on track. It didn't drop any moral lessons in the slightest. The show was grimderp for the sake of being grimderp, just like the rest of Urobuchi's garbage. The hamfistedly predictable character development that occured moments before their deaths? Last minute, hamfisted BOTCHED thermodynamics? Hamfistedly pretentious Deus Ex Machina ending? **** was on par with some edgy fanfiction, and could be described as the epitome "hamfisted vomit" or "how not to write a story". In fact, most of Gen's works can be described as, "What You Don't Want Your Story to Look Like."

So what? It's not uncommon for manga artists to do that... The actual Kohta Hirano (the author of "Hellsing") did that, and a lot of the characters from Hellsing are based on his old hentai character designs (He states that in the first volumes of the manga...). Also, Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba author Kiyohiko Azuma also wrote hentai doujin in the past as well, so the fact that an author wrote hentai in the past doesn't technically make him a bad one or one who concentrates just on boobs...

I always found past exploits of artists and authors to be interesting like how the guy who did the designs for the Megaman Zero series did, and still does, some Kamen Rider hentai or how Yumekui Merry's author did some non-h Tohou doujins.

I knew of those and the things they did. I just thought that it was interesting how he didn't even try to hide it, how he used original designs from his doujins in his new shonen series. It's like a porn star trying to become a kindergarten teacher and still using her stage name.

2/10
http://c.mhcdn.net/store/manga/3032/02-007.0/compressed/07.koi_koi_7_v02c07_001b.jpg
I don't even know where to begin with this show, mostly because I didn't understand a damn thing until literally half the show was done, i'll have to say this now because you won't find out until half way thru what the hell is going on.
Koi Koi 7 is about a guy that is forced to go to a all girls school by his father and he stays at a dorm with 6 girls that refer to themselves as Koi Koi 7.
The first few minutes of the episode starts with the class rep piloting a helicopter trying to shoot down 2 of the girls riding bikes to school. One of them pulls out a rpg from thin air and shoots the vehicle down while the other girl calculates the trajectory. at first i was slightly confused and came to the assumption that maybe this school is supposed to be filled with super powered girls or something as very soon a girl with super strength pops up along with a girl with weaponized hair like Milia Rage, another that can fly and one that shoots electricity and sprouts angel wings. it wasn't until much later that its finally mentioned (by the main character himself) that all the girls are cyborgs and have unique abilities (I thought only the robotic like blond chick was a Cyborg and the rest just had super powers)

I have never seen a show with such bad direction, it never fully explains what the girls are or how they became what they are none of them get enough time to show how their personality is and just seems to jump about alot. This show is very unloved, it has not been properly subtitled and in fact for the first half you probably would think that one of the girls names really is "Poophead kazura". The only thing stopping me from giving this show the lowest grade imaginable is due to 3 things,
1: Despite many many many flaws it has a good way of getting the girls interested in the protagonist that is almost half believable.
2: its intro song isn't half bad

Celo is a computer program meant to watch over the protagonist throughout his life, she became sentient and now wanders about trying to kill the girls near him.
Her character seems too well made for a show like this, her scenes of relief as shown above are very well done and dramatic that it seems utterly wasted on this anime and should have been used elsewhere. She is shown alot in the background doing nothing for about 2 minutes every episode until finally her reveal to group, after her body was damaged she had to get a replacement and spends the rest of the show in loli form

After reading a few chapters of the manga I gotta say what the **** went wrong? manga is well made, establishes the girls condition in chapter 2 and gives them more a hell of alot more personality in a few pages than the anime did in the entire show.
watching the anime and reading the manga is incomprehensible, they are almost entirely different shows altogether its like comparing yugioh the anime to yugioh the manga the one that doesn't involve cards but is more like weird a punisher type super hero show.
Final verdict stay the **** away from the abomination that is the anime and read the manga, watching the anime will make you cry in pity and shame

How many anime shows is that now with a short-haired girl with one of those weird wrap-around eye-patches. Do lots of girls in Japan lose eyes?

It's like Rei Ayanami expies, but instead of bluish short haired emotionless girls, you have girls with short hair and eye patches.

Ah well, since other people seem to have posted their reviews, I guess an even vaguer interpretation of the thread rules should allow me to do this quick obscure manga "review"...

Nickelodeon

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g399/Pants-Man/Screenshot2012-10-20at180931.png?t=1350749431

Although probably not my favorite work by Douman Seiman, Nickelodeon is really a sparkling little gem of randomness; there is little to no plot in it, for starters, with the exception of a couple of recurring characters and connected storylines, and is simply just a collection of 9 to 12-paged short stories, and pretty weird ones, at that that.
I know this sounds more like a recommendation than an actual review, but trust me, there really isn't that much to say about it, so if I managed to pique your interest just a tiny bit, go give it a quick peek right now; you'll probably be through the entire series in about an hour or so...
Anyway, I'd eagerly recommend Nickelodeon (and at least two more of his works, Vovnich Hotel and Oddman 11, since all of them share Nickelodeon's short chapter structure and surreal atmosphere, although being not entirely similar to Nickelodeon... You'd probably finish reading through those in another couple of hours as well...) to anybody who's in for some lighthearted dark-humor (Darkhearted?), occasional gore and nudity

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g399/Pants-Man/Screenshot2012-10-20at200623.png?t=1350756436

(well, sort of occasional...), (really) weird-yet-somewhat-cute characters and, of course, a nice healthy cup of daily weirdness... (At least, one that doesn't require the constant need for puns and grammar-based jokes... I'm looking at you, Nichijou...)

Please note, though, that scanalations have a bad habit of starting one of this author's series and then dropping it somewhere halfway, so you'll occasionally have to dig around for some chapters...

One last thing; keep an eye out for my personal favorite, Chapter 11 "Poohta's Forest"... If you're not gonna read the entire series, at least give that one a quick look and bask in the f**ked-upness of it all...

School rumble
9/10
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X-jTdYr0GI4/UExc4tTNjcI/AAAAAAAAA6A/AZ_zkFF6ARo/s1600/School+Rumble.jpg
I've burned through close to about 30 shows in a months time feeling quite unsatisfied and wanting more and more, and well I ran out.
only a small amount of shows were actually of any notice, but with no shows left to watch I drifted back into a favorite of mine and re-watched it.
and with those 30 shows i watched, none could hold a candle to school rumble.
For those of you who don't know what school rumble is, its a show with essentially two main characters, Tenma Tsukamoto who is madly in love with fellow classmate Oji Karasuma and Kenji Harima who is madly in love with tenma, so its a love triangle right? no. Karasuma is a very reticent being with no clue as to what he is thinking or doing. and even though Harima is madly in love with tenma she is totally oblivious to this.
http://www.otakuelite.com/images/db/video/main/444-3/School-Rumble-2nd-Semester.jpg
so why is school rumble so great to me? well to put it simply i never felt bored at all watching it, and I prefer the english version in this case.
one problem english translations face is the presence of Japanese word puns and school rumble also falls victim to this but actually does fairly well covering it up only adding to the already wacky content. One of my pet peeves about English translations is when they try to throw in american humor in with script or add in un-needed dialogue as filler, magikano is a good example of this. But for some reason school rumble makes this work, so much so that this is one of the few shows I enjoy more than the original manga because of it. Also its good to note that the school rumble stays very close to the actual manga and seem to only stray slighly to end seasons.
But after all of this the #1 reason I love school rumble so much is because of Harima

Throughout the show Harima goes through some major **** to try and build up a relationship with tenma, and efforts and struggles carved their way into my heart and harima is forever a brother to me more so than my actual brothers ;.;but y'know with all this effort I would still prefer her sister over tenma any day. Yes believe it or not I like the more adult character here
http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af164/Zeo_Zuiichi/tenma_yakumo.png
Screw tenma, Harima is all school rumble needs its all about da harima, also interestingly enough harima has multiple love interests and some prefer the blond rich girl Eri but throughout the war of yakumo vs eri I shall forever stay at yakumo's side

*Majikoi Update* Majikoi The english Dub has been made, so well **** I guess there's hope indeed

Ah well, time for another stupid short review of an barely known series for me!

Mezzo Forte

http://i27.tinypic.com/9ivb54.jpg

Do the words "Kung Fu Fighting" remind you of anything? No? AMV Hell 0? Still nothing? How about "Man getting kicked in the nuts and dropping bowling ball on his head, causing blood to spurt out of his nose"? That's the one...

I keep asking myself as to why I like this series so much. After all, it's basically everything I'd hate to see in any of my more "normal" anime: Hardcore porn, a ****-ton of violence of any shape and size (fingernail mutilation deserves a special mention here...), occasional plot holes and pretty basic characters. Yet it all seems so... So unnaturally fitting, resulting in one of my favorite action OVAs that I've seen in months, strangely enough...

First up, the title; why the hell is it called Mezzo Forte? Well, as far as I know, it's just what we use in music to define when a piece should be played "Medium loud", and that's what it translates into in italian... I don't know really what they were going for here; maybe "Stronger" (Fortissimo)? "Sorta strong" (Pił o meno forte)? I dunno, I guess all I can do is guess...

http://www.rubberslug.com/user/48ecc5619f324159bb2ff8336803ea28/310384-2045324-mezz2-36acap.jpg

So, let's get on with the actual review; what's the plot? Well, in a not too far away future, three mercenaries (As seen in the picture above, from left to right; Mikura, the gunslinger, Tomohasa, the technician, and Kenichi, the driver) end up getting in a sticky situation during one of their dirty jobs, consisting in the kidnapping of the boss of an enormous crime family, and end up having to face the boss' murderously psychotic daughter and her henchmen. Oh, and there's some crap going on regarding "pleasure robots" of some kind, as well as the fact that Mikura seems to have some "prophetic" (in this case, "prophetic" as in "wet") dreams, but none of it is ever really explained by the end, so you can just skip right past it (please note that I'm basing this review an the OVA, as I haven't seen the actual TV series yet...)
Pretty basic, huh?

Still, this series somehow manages to be so lively and fast-paced that I really just can't bring yourself to hate it, despite the fact that there's at least two porn scenes that just come straight out of the blue and then disappear as if nothing really happened (In one of those two scenes, this is actually the case...)
Screw that; as soon as those guns come back a-blazin', I'm probably at the edge of my seat muttering over and over "Ohmygodohmygodohmygod..." to myself. Seriously, some of those action scenes are as exciting as it can get... And that's not counting the awe-gasmic ending.

I guess it must be something about the flow of this OVA; it's basically just the essence of everything that should be in a cheesy action movie: guns, chicks, chicks with guns, sex, gore, cars, a bare plot and explosions.
I have the distinct feeling that the creators probably knew just as well as us that it was just plain over-the-top mindless action, yet still went with it and turned everything up to eleven on the way. Who cares about character development when you're gonna have a scene where two street thugs are crushed into a bloody pulp by a falling car? Or, heck, remember those unnecessary porn scenes I mentioned earlier? Despite the fact that they completely come out of the blue, they don't really change drastically the experience in any way; rather, they simply feel more like an added bonus...

While a certain part of my brain is screaming to not do this, I'd gladly recommend this to anyone who's in for some good old-school "tits-and-gore" series from the late '90s...

Boogiepop Phantom
AKA Serial Experiments Lain on Crack

8/10, if you like really unusual things like Serial Experiment Lain.

Enjoyed it overall, as I said above the closest comparison I can make is to 'Lain on crack'. Styled much like Lain with unusual visuals, weird sound effects, and lots of 'WTF just happened' moments. The show (as far as I can tell) is mainly about negative human emotions/acts, jealousy, revenge, etc. The episodes are very non-linear; for example ep. 3 might lead into ep. 4, but ep. 9 leads back into the beginning of ep. 3, and so on. One episode is even presented in reverse time (starts at the end and ends at the beginning). There are many characters who only appear for one or two episodes, so it can be hard to say who the main characters are until late in the show. Even Boogiepop only appears in like half the episodes, and usually only for a minute or two. Complex plot, would probably require multiple viewings to get everything, or cheat like I did and read the production notes in the special features after finishing the series. :sweatdrop:

Visuals: Good for the era (2000). The show takes place 90% at night and uses muted, almost sepia tones so you may find yourself reaching for the brightness control on your TV. It also does things like blur the background/characters at times and other weird visual effects.

Audio: Good opening song. The soundtrack was decent and added to the mood of scenes but didn't stand out like say Yoko Kanno or such. Also lots of weird sound effects/garbled dialogue, etc. like in Lain again.

Character designs: Lots of fun gets poked at current anime having generic character designs, but the ones in BP are almost identical to Lain and many other 90's shows (edit: BP and Lain do share the same character designer). All the characters have realistic hair/eye color so it can be difficult to tell them apart at times. Since there are many one-episode characters they probably had to re-use faces.

Plot: When I figure it out, I'll get back to you.

But seriously, without too many spoilers: Some event (that is never fully explained) involving a beam of light 5 years earlier disrupts the electromagnetic field around the city, causing some people (mainly middle/high school students) to mutate various special abilities. Said abilities are generally used to kill/take advantage of normal humans. Boogiepop and a 'bad ass normal' girl go around separately terminating the aberrations for their own reasons.

Dub: Again, decent for the era. Nothing like Cowboy Bebop dub quality, but not unwatchable. Because there's a brazillion characters they had to scrape the bottom of the AV barrel for some of the background/one episode characters though.

Sub: Haven't watched it subbed yet.
