Also, I'd like it if you could give an explanation why you like your #1 anime so much. And maybe give an estimate of how many anime shows you've watched.

Seen about 50 shows
1. Mushi-shi
2. Clannad
3. Hunter x Hunter
4. Moribito
5. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya/Darker Than Black (can't decide)

My list is kind of weird! And I liked Mushi so much because each episode had Ginko solving strange mysteries. I just thought it was interesting.

1. Azumanga Daioh
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat
4. Comic Party Revolution
5. School Rumble

My OWN list is just simple as a fan of comedy. As for #1, the reason I pick Azumanga Daioh because it delivers excellent characters, great humor, excellent voice-acting, and some weird moments. Considerably, it's the most popular anime I ever watch.

Hmm...

1. Black Lagoon
2. Code Geass
3. Gurren Lagann
4. Toradora!
5. Death Note/ Elfen Lied (cant decide)

Black Lagoon: I guess because it was realistic (mostly) and it dealt with alot of things that other animes wouldnt touch. heres my Manga list. Code Geass: im not sure, i just really liked the story and the characters, the setting was ok, but im not much for Mech, still i really liked it alot.

1. FullMetal Alchemist
2. Bleach
3. Highschool of the Dead
4. Soul Eater
5. Black Lagoon

Alright, I'm still kind of new here, but I figure this would be a good topic to place my first post. =]

1. Shuffle!
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
3. Kanon 2006
4. Angel Beats!
5. Spice & Wolf

I really love Shuffle. I can't decide if it's just the concept, or if its the characters that make it for me. It was the first "School Life" anime I watched. It also was the show that got me back into anime. But Higurashi is a very close second.

1.Elfen Lied
2.Slayers saga
3.R.O.D the TV
4.Cowboy Bebop
5.Ghost in the shell S.A.C and second gig

the soundtrack is haunting. the voice acting is top notch(one of the few shows I can stand to watch in English. amazing job ADV) The characters are real and emotionally damaged. the story is gripping and suspenseful. other people tell me this show is all about the nudity or "fan service" what those people don't get is that if you watch beyond the first 10 minutes of the story you realize that unlike a lot of other anime (or Hollywood movies for that matter) yes it has some nudity and gore in the extreme but it is actually necessary to the story not just added in to draw in men. the story makes us truly sit back and think of how your treatment of other human beings can have serious consequences down the road. and I guarantee that something like this will happen sometime in the future. the question this show poses is when the next stage of humanity comes will we greet it with open arms or lab tests and cover ups? true masterpiece.

There are so many good ones that there should be like 2-3 per slot but anyways, I picked Elfen Lied cause its the only anime so far that has succeeded in making me cry, it was so sad! NGE didn't really make me cry just made me depressed for a week or two. Couldn't stand it had to out down two for each slot :D

I have watched 23. And i watch all the episodes when i do.

I agree that Death Note and Code Geass seemed to be exploring the same themes, but really they came to completely different conclusions about them.

The following is quite a big spoiler if you haven't seen all of the series, and I can't find spoiler tags...

<SPOILER>
<SPOILER>
<SPOILER>
In Code Geass, even though it looked like Lelouch was losing his humanity and becoming corrupted by his power, in the end he gave up everything for his ideals. In Death Note though, Light actually did lose his humanity, and quite quickly at that (killing the fake "L", and then even more definitively killing the FBI agents crossed the line from "Dark Hero" to "Villain who believes he is right")
</SPOILER>
</SPOILER>
</SPOILER>

As far as which is better, that's a really hard question. Even though they explored the same themes of mortals who want to save the world from itself dealing with incredible power, they were really in completely different genres.

IMO Death Note wins out as a serious story, and the overall quality of the art was much better, but Code Geass was really good for the well-done action and humor elements, and it definitely wins out on the fan service front :D Also I thought the ending to Code Geass was much more satisfying, and in particular after a certain character in Death Note is killed I thought it really lost its way until the very end.

1. Dragonball/Z (GT can die in a fire)
2. Trigun
3. Gurren Lagann
4. Anything by Hayao Miyazaki (i know that's kind of cheating, but i really can't pick a favorite between his works.)

Though we had many of these threads, I don't quite remember what I posted here so

- Clannad After Story

smth like that, though it's really hard to choose, GOSH!

I watched the first 9 episodes of clannad and had to stop. Am I watching the same series as everyone else? I've never felt such a huge disconnect with the rest of the anime community before. This series is consistantly rated high on several sites and gets mentions in many peoples top anime lists, but I can't for the life of me understand why. I can whole-heartedly agree with most of the other top picks, and the ones I don't agree with I can at least see where they are comming from. But Clannad.....seems waaaaay out in left field.

not sure how to explain it, but its with the characters, as there isnt much of a main plot. look at it this way: Im pretty sure Clannad was once a video game in which you the protagonist had to make friends with and solve the problems of these people in the series.

the anime pretty much follows that line, because the protagonist makes friends with these people in his school and gradualy changes each of their lives for the better. so its more of a relationship anime.

so thats the way I see it, but others probably have a better deffinition of Clannad

Clannad only leaves a huge impression on you if you watch the entire series. It's really hard to say anything else without ruining the show. The entire first season is basically a warm-up, but it is an absolute must see before continuing to After Story. When people say Clannad is one of their favorite series, 10/10 of them saw every single episode from season 1 and season 2.

As for my list:
1. Clannad+After Story
2. Higurashi + Kai
3. Toradora!
4. High School of the Dead
5. Durarara!

I can't really explain why everyone likes it and you don't, but I do know the feeling. My sister watched Death Note and hated it. She wasn't able to understand why people were so interested in watching them sit around and talk all the time. I personally liked Death Note, however, she didn't. Maybe you just don't like non actiony animes? Having an entire show about a guy and some girls walk around sounds boring, so maybe it is.

2) Bokurano (Something about kids dying and giant robots fighting just tickles me inside a little)
3) Dragonball Z (It was my starter anime, gotta give it props)
4) Clannad + Afterstory, Air and Kanon (I loved all three equally as much, cried at the ending of Air and nearly at the end of AS. All are great series though)
5) Koi Kaze (Ahh, so many reasons why I love this one, the story, the romance, but most of all the music is by far the best I have ever heard in any anime. And I'm not talking about the op and ed themes, I mean the background music. It just set the mood perfectly.)

1. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Definitely the most unique and hilarious anime I ever saw. I decided that it was my favorite anime about two and a half years ago, and no anime Ive seen since has changed my mind.

2. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - It's by far the most well rounded anime Ive even seen. Its a comedy, drama, action, romance, and has just the right amount of fanservace and its all mixed in perfectly and is always entertaining for me. It has one of the most solid and original plots with great characters to hold it all together. Its the only anime that I can rewatch countless times and catch new things and like it better each time.

3. Azumanga Daioh - Even though it wasn't the first school anime, for me it was the first one to perfect it. There's really not much I can say about it, just that its one of the very few animes out of the many that Ive seen to have a large cast of characters all of whom I found likable, and to make me laugh at pretty much every single joke of the series. (And as a side note, Azumanga Daioh also has the honor of having my number one favorite anime character of all time. Bonus points if you can guess which one)

4. Paranoia Agent - Being headed by the legendary Satoshi Kon, its a no brainer as to why I love this anime. It wasn't quite as confusing as Kon's other works, but it still kept me guessing (both what was gonna happen next and my sanity) There are very few mediums whether it be movie or anime or anything that actually makes me wonder who the real culprit is and what could possibly happen next. It was just one hell of an experience that I still think about once in a while.

5. Excel Saga - To me Excel Saga is the most crazy and random anime that Ive seen that's still able to have a solid storyline and a really good plot held together with awesome characters and hilarious jokes. I still laugh all the way through it no matter how many times I watch it, and it stays as fresh every time. And not to mention that after being super crazy and random the whole series, it shifts gears really quickly and gets dead serious and dramatic for the final story arc and actually gets really badass.

Sorry about rambling so much, but I just had to explain (as short as I could, trust me I could go on) about why those animes are my favorites.
