I received a lot of really good videos for AMV Hell 6 this time around, many of them quite epic and laugh-out-loud funny. By a rough estimate, probably around half of the videos from the original draft of AMV Hell 6 will be replaced, drastically improving the overall quality of the project.
A release date can not be set at this stage, but I am anticipating sometime in March.

For those who haven't been following things, here is a quick run down of what's been going on:
AMV Hell 6 originally premiered at a few conventions last year, to somewhat lackluster response. The project coordinator had intended to release a slightly updated version online, but due to various reasons, that never came about. It was finally decided that I would take over the project in order to finish it up, but at the same time, I decided to reopen the project and allow people to submit more videos. I received around 400 entries in a little over 1 month, and it has been a big success. Once everything is all put together, it will be released right here. So just stay tuned, it will be worth the wait!

March sounds like a good timeframe for a release. It sounds like its shaping up to be much better than the rough cut which is nice too. I'm not really great at coming up with ideas and I'm pretty slow with editing so I only made one. I think my clip was accepted though so I hope its enjoyable to those who see it if it shows up and thanks to those who gave me some help on it.

to be frank, I'm glad 6 was reopened for submissions. The original window completely slipped past me, I had five segments in amv hell 5 and felt dismayed that I wouldn't have a chance at contributing for 6; though, thanks to the reopening I've got at least 3 segments according to the rating system . . . hmmm, now that I'm looking at it, that statement seems kinda conceited . . .

some of the ones that stay may be re-edits...how many "good, but too long" clips are there

Sir Fluffykins
02-02-2013, 09:12 AM
5 accepted, 4 possible, 3 rejected, not bad considering I started editing, using the guide, for the first time, 18 days ago.

My rejected clips were on Evangelion (I laughed when Zarxrax replied to my End of the Universe themed clip saying he has "received too many using these exact scenes") and my very long 20 second Panty & Stocking - Romeo & Juliet clip. Also the fact Zarxrax replied to every entry and gave constant input for my final/longest clip before accepting it amazes me, considering he got 400 entries to go through.

So...are we getting a double feature? Or at least a 2 hour epic?

Akyho

welp, I guess I can just assume that all the videos that I liked will be removed. damn the quality of some of these was just horrible, but for some reason everyone here has a completely different sense of humor compared to mine so Imma just ready myself for a completely emasculated AMV Hell 6

"AMV HELL 3: The Motion Picture" had a lot of universal jokes, which is why I showed it at parties. "AMV HELL 4: The Last One" was all inside jokes (trust me, I've watched it over 100 times), and "AMV HELL 5: Dedicated To Dio" was borderline. Since "AMV HELL 6: The End OF The Universe" had more universal jokes than AMV HELL 3, excepting the completely inclusive intro and the scrapped clips, I must say my excitement factor has risen from 4.5 to 9.5. Here's to hoping the final editing comes out in time to be boasted about a Sakura-con or something similar.

Head splitting is also apparently allowed. Kind of surprised me. Could've sworn if we were going for a PG-13 thing, I wouldn't be able to use one of the scenes I had in mind involving a dude killing a vampire.

Lol, my last clip had to be censored because of an F-bomb. So too late to cry about this XD (Though Sh!t and b!tch are allowed apparently)

I had to censor "****" twice for a clip, and it still got rejected due to being inappropriate. Might have also had something to do with the clip (intentionally) appearing to be slightly... sexual, though.

Guys. Submissions literally just closed. Why do you keep asking when it's gonna come out? Do you think Zarx has already finished the video and that's why he closed submissions? Cause I can tell you, unless he's a superhuman editor, I don't think that's possible. Not to speak for Zarx or anything, but he's probably still putting it together. These things take a lot of time and it's very difficult to predict when one will be finished with a project. Especially one this big. Now Zarx, feel free to contradict me and give everyone a release date.

Probably 99% of the 5 star rated videos will get in, but apparently I gave 5 star ratings to a ridiculous number of clips, like 150 or so. They do deserve it though.

As for the 3 stars, a good chunk of them probably won't get in. I might use between 25-50% of the 3 stars.

And some videos probably won't get in because their creators never bothered responding after I said something needed to be changed.

I just finished going through all of the original videos from amv hell 6.
I sorted them out among good ones that will stay in, ok ones that might stay in, and bad ones that are getting cut.
57 good (about 15 minutes)
47 maybe
138 bad
plus there were maybe 20 or so that I haven't been able to check yet.

Now, I'm going to go through my lists and compare against what other people have said they liked and didn't like, and maybe swap some stuff around.
But all in all, MOST of the stuff from the original Hell 6 is getting cut out.

Oh jeeze, 55 minutes? Am I the only one who thinks that's pretty short? I don't expect those maybes to be another half hour, and I, too, would like to preserve the "baby."
I mean, my understanding is there is only one person deciding what's funny and what's not, and we all know humor is a fairly arbitrary thing. Should we not give the most "unsure" clips the benefit of the doubt and give the audience more material? I'm not seeing the downside to having a full length video unless the other options are really that objectively bad. And if that's the case, maybe submissions closed a bit early.

Um I am going to stop you right there. There will be for sure 55 minutes of good clips. Then you have 47 maybe clips from the rough cut AMV Hell 6 that could go back in and also
As for the 3 stars, a good chunk of them probably won't get in. I might use between 25-50% of the 3 stars.

My goal is to keep the overall length of the video about the same, but to hopefully swap out many of the less interesting videos with some much better ones. So get to work and lets see what you guys can do!

Xuande
02-17-2013, 08:22 AM
No exact length has been given for the final version yet and I'd much rather have an hour full of quality videos than a hour and a half long video with 30 minutes of possibly not so great clips tacked on just for the sake of making it longer. AMV Hell 3 was a little over an hour long and it was fine that way so I don't see the problem with what the current projected length is at. Its pretty certain it will end up closer to the original length though since so many new clips were sent in and then theres still some from the original to work in too.

WE haven't had a rejected reel since AMV Hell 3, which I rather enjoyed, a compromise would be to have one for AMV Hell 6.

PS: Is the VGH6 and Final Fantasy themed thing still in the works or is that now completely forgotten?

Hmm. Finally got around to watching the original version of AMV Hell 6. I thought it was actually quite good. Definitely a few not so funny/I didnt get the joke clips (maybe a couple more than usual), but that is always the case with these sorts of compilations. I would suggest that some of the ordering of clips was a bit off though.

The incorrect aspect was the result of my source clips. I didn't export in the wrong aspect or anything like that. If anything being given footage in the wrong aspect and being able to adjust it should make me more desirable as an editor. One would hope that on a professional project your camera man isn't shooting in alternating aspect ratios (or I in the case of an animation your animator isn't drawing in alternating aspect ratios).

So far people with individual gigs and small independent production companies have hired me. I actually just booked a new gig.

Never bought an anime on DVD (well unless you count a Gundam wing from the discount box when I was 14. The damn thing was all clips shows). Anyway are anime dvds typically shifted to widescreen? Is that the point? I torrent all my source material. The torrent was widescreen and I didn't bother to check if the original material was 4X3.

I can tell a widescreen from a 4x3.

My training and experience is primarily in the artistic controls such as cutting, synching, adding transitions, a little bit of chroma keying, titles, key framing ect. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best at technical **** which is precisely why I want experience as an assistant.

What are your qualifications in video editing exactly?

See, right here' I'll admit I don't really know what you're talking about. I can tell you that Zarax didn't say anything about pixel shape, just that FLCL wasn't broadcast in widescreen.

I didn't say anything about formal training it's the professional experience that matters and you don't have any in operating a post house, TV studio or any other venue that would hire editors so how can you possibly know what they need an assistant editor to do? Claiming you're qualified to recruit for a post house is like claiming I'm qualified to recruit for the Army because I've spent years studying military history as a hobby.

Taking a hobby seriously defeats the purpose of having a hobby.

furthemore who do you think gonna bite a single word you say? we can see your mistake, but not your "serious" work, for all we know you could be just an attension whoring brat pretending to have a job.

I already said it was a longshot. So what? You've got to take risks and get rejected if you want to succeed in anything. In creative fields it's not uncommon for people to get hired just because they showed passion and enthusiasm. Seriously, what did I have to lose? (not my time arguing with you btw. I'm waiting on some laundry). So I goofed with the aspect, I also made a video Zarax liked, it was in fact declared "Perfect" with the exception of that one error.

Hmm prove I'm not just doing this for attention...

Well for starters, it all started with a totally nonchalant post and then everyone else blew it out of proportion.

Second, said post was seeking entry level film and video work, which people don't typically do for attention. If I wanted attention I'd go on a film and television forum and ask to be made director or lead actor. That would get me way more attention.

If you want to see further proof of something more serious go on the "random videos" thread. There's an excerpt from my senior thesis. I can't share much else since most of what I've done is for private use or isn't released yet.

I can also show you my IMDB:

"Could have" in the sense that this is not the final version. If we were going to call it a day, rather than deeming this "the rough cut," then I would've just said "how far we've fallen."

About 6-8 videos may get cut due to technical issues, I'm unable to work with the files.

New to this site, sorry if these questions have been asked ad infinitum, didn't see anything recent that answered these. I would like to make submissions for the next production (whatever and whenever that is), and these questions are in regards to that. Apologies if this isn't the right place for these questions, as is probably the case.

I'm seeing a lot of complaints on formatting and aspect ratios. What is the preferred video format, definition, AR, and audio quality, and under what circumstances can these specifications be relaxed based on the availability of footage of a given animation?

Are there criteria for length? Obviously, this would largely be determined on a case-by-case basis, but is there a general preference for numerous separate videos of the same show to the same song (in an attempt to make a running gag), or is a single longer video preferred? Also, is there a general minimum-maximum entry length limit?

Lastly, is there a preference for the number of entries from a given show, entries with the same or similar song, or entries with a similar theme? I suppose I'm asking how many videos does it generally take for a given show, song or theme to reach saturation in the approval/compilation process?

I'm pleased to hear that the new Hell 6 is going to be at least 80 minutes long. I was quite alarmed to hear that so many skits were being cut from the original version, and I really thought that it was far too extreme - a new AMV Hell is special; it's genuinely an Event, and as such it needs to be a full feature-length edition to properly dignify it, otherwise the sensation would disspitate by feeling undercooked. I was also worried about the heavy cuts for another reason, in that oddly enough it might be undermining the advantage of the AMV Hell format. The noise in the initial reaction threads might have provoked a lot of comedy to be lost in response. People's tastes in humour differ, and no matter how rigorous the selection process, no-one is going to laugh at every last single skit - AND THAT'S OK. The ruthless blow-by-blow evaluation of laugh-proprtions by some posters was mising the point. You can see it in some of the previous threads, where one poster disliked a skit only for another to praise it. We shouldn't always worry about that - that's why we have 200 skits in a Hell.

In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the new version - not long to go now!

Zarxrax
03-08-2013, 04:42 AM
I have everything laid out, it will run in total about 1:20 - 1:25. Though I think I might cut out a few more vids that I think aren't really flowing in the context of the whole thing.
Also still working on the order of a lot of the clips. There is a lot of unexpected synergy that can come from certain clips. For instance, a clip of someone driving followed by a clip of someone getting hit by a car may get some extra laughs just due to them being back to back. A lot of the best ones seem to come about by accident.

hosokawa37
03-08-2013, 05:39 AM
oh yea, you def got to have a nice flow, and thats totally understandable.

i usually go for good flow when i released my skits to the public, and i like not to have the same anime run in 2 consecutive skits, or the same audio [for example: two consecutive family guy skits, two consecutive Disturbed skits, and so forth]. then again, I'm a skit editor, not a movie editor xD

Did they look at it through the eyes of video editors?

I primarily see the rough cut as a failure on the technical level, but it can be argued it failed in the comedic level just as if not almost as badly as 5 with one too many jokes that go over your head. I suppose the former being better than the latter and vice versa could result in a...Passable" effort to a majority, but both together...

Sir Fluffykins
03-14-2013, 07:05 AM
^Sees comments about "What was wrong with the Rough cut"

*Somewhere Ursala sings "YOU POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS"*

It was terrible...mainly because last year it seemed hardly anyone was interested in video editing, so they were literally scrapping together a video from 200 something clips, then this year, Zarxrax reopened and they got 400 new clips to choose from. Not saying they're all good, but I assume it's far easier to make a "generally better" vid when you have more people submitting far more clips.

Haar
03-14-2013, 07:08 AM
No one was interested? I just ran out of extra ideas and was too selfish to dole out what at the time I thought were some of my best videos that were already made, due to working on my own project. Kind of for the best in hindsight, seeing as how most of those that I had made weren't exactly great and ended up having to remake most of those anyway. Can't really vouch for the others, but I thought the problem was just that there was no centralized hub for things in a public viewing area, due to most of this being done via email or something like that.

Anyway, regarding comedy, I just thought that a lot of the rough cut was just unintuitive, nonsensical, and/or full of redundant humor. There was potential, but a lot of the good concepts just seemed poorly executed to me. More or less the type of things you'd see on children's television programs nowadays. Not even going to bother bringing up the editing, since that's largely irrelevant to most of you here asking this question.

Hm... can't tell if you're joking or serious, but I'm hoping for the former.

You're more or less repeating what everyone else is saying here. The entire point of threads is to bring forth original content during discussions, rather than just reposting the same line 20 times.

You must be new here.

Confirmed for not reading anything I've posted here for the past year or so. Also, I said the point, not the norm. The norm for this site is to run around with your head shoved up your ass ignoring any point made. Doesn't mean it's right.

I take year long leaves of absence from this site, which Jinzo apparently doesn't do, and come back and there may be new names, but there is still never a serious thread to be found.

I'm referring to the general exaggeration and operatic drama we produce here. Folks will make some things seem like the end of the world for the sake of humor. Also, we're respectful?

Just can't expect serious without starting a new thread of your own.
That's sort of up for debate. A few of us manage to even ruin those, for better or worse. Granted, most of the ruining occurs in SleeplessPanda threads, but that's another story.

AMV rough cut I just didn't find....funny. As stated earlier a lot of jokes just went over your(my) head. I actually really liked AMV 5 compared to most people it seems. I saw a grand majority of the anime but even those I had yet to see I found enjoyable. I welcome the use of obscure anime being used but with less focus on anime specific jokes and more on overall humor we can all enjoy. I watch the AMVs and pick out clips of anime that seem really interesting and end up watching them, so more the more variety the better. While the Fus Ro Dah clips were attempts at making generally funny clips (in the rough cut) it seemed out of place to me. I thought the Azumanga daioh one was ok but not fantastic. I can not say much, as many know I am not an editor and have yet to submit a clip. Between my overall current lack of skill, school work load, and other obligations my time for learning the art of editing, as well as the means to acquire the anime needed, is rather limited. In every AMV Hell there will be sub par clips merely because they fail in comparison to the actual good AMVs in. Also AMVs I find enjoyable will not been seen in the same light as another. For instance the "BOOM headshot" audio has been over-used to say the least but even so I find myself still enjoying those clips, whereas many of my friends/enemies/random people on this sight cringe at the very thought of another clip with this audio even being submitted. It's all about perspective whether some clips are good or bad. This being said, there are just AMVs made that are just plain awful (as viewed by the grand majority). It happens. The rough cut of AMV 6 was, what I believe, an example of this, with a few hidden gems. The fact that we reopened the submittions, in an attempt to correct this "failure" I think is huge. We could have been stuck with AMV 6 how it was and Zarxrax could have just finalized it and just said screw it. Then when we saw the material our editors, how ever few in number they may be, kicked it into high gear and pushed out, what I hope, laugh out loud and epic clips in response. The flame of AMV Hell is still here, ladies and gentlemen, how ever small it may be, a mere smoldering ash perhaps, but it lives. I hear talk of how this place and the forums have gone to ****, no one cares, nothing is serious. I say to you that I enjoy the silly forums, it makes this place fun, the arguments and randomness is all in good taste (I say this VERY conservatively). But I agree, this place should also hold its own realm of serious AMV/anime discussion without the raging and bigotry most all the internet has to offer. A place of sanctuary for the AMV editors as well as a place of supportive criticism and discussion. I know now I will receive many comments expressing doubts, and "do you even visit this site," but comments like that are part of the reason this site is moving more and more off track. negative comments or comments expressing doubt are not the way to bring this site any glory or improve it in any way. At this point I feel I am merely rambling but I needed to speak my peace on the topic. How many will actually read this, I do not know. Regardless my opinion is out there. I may be a goofball, and not a very valuable member of the site, compared to others, but now I can safely say I have posted something I believe to be of value, whether anyone gives my post a second thought or not.

I agree, but that's easier said than done. The problem is how some don't want to listen at all and how their usual response to criticism is "Get the **** out of my thread and off of my site if you disagree with me," "No matter what you say, I still don't see anything wrong with it," or "Sure, I'll listen to what you said," followed by them making the exact same mistakes that they did before. The few folks that do give out criticism are more than likely annoyed by hearing those sorts of thing so many times and having to constantly link to the same 5 pages for naive people. For example, I've had to link to the general guide on how to make AMVs at least 15 times in the past year, and I'm convinced that only maybe 2 people actually listened. The rage and bigotry are a mere afterthought in the whole process of trying to help people. I mean, there's naivety and noviceship, and then there's ignorance and stupidity. That's how I view it, anyway. Can't say for sure with Guthix.

I understand haar. I have these good intentions but making it come to actuality is a completely different story. How do we get everyone to work together to get this to happen? The world may never know

Haar
03-14-2013, 05:46 PM
The simple answer is that we can't, short of public shaming to the point of the oblivious kiddies leaving, making them listen to Cosmic Shame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzVlZ5VNtQg) until they are enlightened, and/or handing out autism pills so they can get a grip.

I mean, nothing's perfect, so just use whatever resources you have on hand, hope you can get people to listen to you when you do actually say something to them, and make the best out of the situation with what you have.

I used notepad for that. I found 5 or so that made me smile, but that was based on my first viewing and I didn't bother updating it with my opinions from rewatching it After the initial disappointment, the number of videos I liked was significantly higher. By my standards, anyway.

How in the world was that a ****storm?

in all honesty i dont give a dam, im not an editor, i just create win/win situations for my self.if an editor posts a crappy amv i give feedback, if the editor is still **** i go for my usual entertainment route, if the editor gets better i get something to watch. win/win

like i said, it looks diferent when you make one.
