The idea is to switch from 640x480 (4:3) to 853x480 (16:9). (Zarx, please correct me if I'm wrong.) Pillarboxing could be used for 4:3 footage, which some editing programs do automatically. That way none of the footage is unnecessarily cropped or distorted.

Letterboxing (also done automatically in certain programs) would still be needed for some widescreen footage (particularly feature films with 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 ratios), but in my opinion, 16:9 would do them more justice than 4:3.

Of course, if the point of the AMV is to distort or crop the footage, that's a different story.

This seems to be the direction to go. What kinds of issues do you foresee? What kinds of questions do you have? Any questions or pointers regarding specific programs? Post them here!

How exactly do you mean? That it won't play at all, or that the picture is distorted, or something else?

Most people seem to have widescreen monitors these days (i dont, but whatever), and almost all anime is widescreen now, so it just seems to make sense. Also, youtube has pretty much moved to widescreen, so when I upload amv minis on youtube, the widescreen videos currently have letterboxing on the top/bottom AND on the sides as well.
Moving to a widescreen format should take care of all this, and I don't really forsee any problems from it.

I think the issue lies more in how each editor exports their AMV submissions, which shouldn't really be a problem, but if they do they should feel free to ask here.
