Okay, i know there are alot of users online at the moment so hopefully this thread will have some replies. Some people are currently downloading AMV Hell 5, some are planning to download it, some have finished downloading it and are planning to watch it and some have already seen it, my ISP is very slow at the moment so the AMV Hell 5 torrent will not download and the Ustream link doesn't go too well either. But i was wondering for those that have seen AMV Hell 5, What was it like? Was it better than AMV Hell 4? was it worse? Has it been the best one in the series so far? and so on...

Hell, less generic crap period. It's why we're taking so long, really (trying to be 100% original this go around...), and while I say that we reopened the clip pool for Hell 5, one of the other reasons is that the fall season currently happening is fantastic and should be clipped. Panty & Stocking in particular ought to be a gold mine.


Actual review as follows:
I was, overall, honestly disappointed with Hell 5. Few standouts (Doomi's were honestly my favorite out of the whole thing), sure, but from a content standpoint is was... top heavy, is the phrase? The "look at me" clips were fantastic, but the "support" clips fell a bit short. I felt like half of the clips could be removed and we'd have something the same quality or better. Probably just me

On a technical level, it was worse than the first Hells... bad video quality on way more clips than there should be (though I've been known as a quality freak, and one of the Always clips was excusable as it's one of the only remaining footages of the show. I checked.), bad audio quality on some (sound levels were just as bad as Blitz 1's. I was constantly adjusting the volume), and some wonky cuts or bad choices for some of the clips (though that's more of a personal thing... again, quality freak).

And the repetition. Dear Haruhi, the repetition. It wasn't as bad as the Atlanta showing (a few clips mercifully vanished, though not the ones I'd expected), but it still stood out heavily. I understand it's part of leading the audience along, but still, it sucked badly.

And, of course, our stolen Lucky Star clip. Everyone at Blitz is rather sore about that, especially since it practically matched Behemoth's version frame for frame, just worse... again, quality checking, on both the artists and the judges. And since it made it past the second QC stage, we're taking it as a declaration of war. Apparently Hell doesn't even think about what their offspring/competitors have done...

So yeah, call me a naysayer. I think Blitz can do better, and honestly, Hell can as well. 5 was nowhere near their best. Like 2 in 4's format...

Truthfully, I did like AMV Hell 5. But, in order to like it, I have to watch it in the context of it being post-Zarxrax. SSGWNBTD has some issues to work on. Still, AMV Hell 5 is a vast improvement over /0 (disregarding obvious content differences). Video quality of clips was much better balanced. Lack of subtitled clips was greatly appreciated. The reuse of audio did distract from the rest of the video, but that just might be a "creative difference".


And, of course, our stolen Lucky Star clip. Everyone at Blitz is rather sore about that, especially since it practically matched Behemoth's version frame for frame, just worse... Some us are taking it harder than others. It was a very personal clip. It had our old forum in the clip itself. And here, we find the AMV Hell website plastered over ours. It's like looking at a photo album, finding a picture of you and your friends having a great time, but finding someone else's face scotch taped over yours. It hurts.

Thats the same way I feel. I'm surprised the song repeat clips were allowed in since 1, they were terrible songs and 2, they were terrible clips as well. I was hoping to see more variety in the anime shown this time as well but it was mostly the same stuff we've seen before. That being said there were still some good clips in there. To me its AMVH3 > AMVH4 > AMVH5.

Since I haven't been on here in years and recently saw 5, I thought I'd make a comeback by saying this:
Good job, guys. I was pretty impressed :)

Of course there was the usual occurrence of sub-par clips (such as the idea of simply matching lyrics to appropriate clips...clips that only fans of the show would get.. seeing the same clips over and over again...etcetc), but there were a good amount of moments that had me laughing out loud.

Anyways, IMO I liked Hell 5. Had a lot of fresh material. There were some golden jokes:

Gurren Lagann - Chicks Dig Giant Robots
K-On! - The Weekenders Theme
Porco Rosso - Talespin
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - Dr. Who Season 5 Theme

And there were some potentially boring jokes:

Halo - Halo
Street Fighter - One Piece (Should've reversed it so that it was One Piece - Street Fighter)
Pokemon - Love Song (Bad pun is BAD.)

Thankfully, Hell 5 had more good than bad jokes. Overall, I give it 7/10.

Hell 4 is still better though. (Excel Saga - Hard Rock Halleujah clip FTW!)

DING DING DING DING! We have a reasonable response that gets exactly where I'm coming from. I'm looking at AMV Hell and its kin from the perspective of a creator of AMVs. Little flaws tend to irritate me, and I will call them out. I am in no way stating that I'm better at making AMVs. Hell, one of my clips for Blitz was 4gb because I forgot to compress it. All my clips for Blitz weren't deinterlaced and I required help editing some of the effects in. I'm just as harsh on myself as I am on everything else.

Look, the reason why those clips were in there was because of, like Backmask said, a coincidence. AMV Hell and AMV Minis were being run by two different people. Zarx was in charge of Minis and SSG gained directing rights to the Hell series after Hell 4. A couple of people had decided to try and submit their clips to AMV Hell 5, but the response was taking way too long for them. So they decided to submit their clip to Minis. SSG had no connection to the Minis, so he had probably never seen them at the time in which he was accepting clips for Hell 5, so he must have considered them to be original. Basically, we had two different people working on two different projects looking at the same clip. Therefore, after they were accepted into Minis, their response came back saying they either got accepted or rejected from Hell 5.

Eh, I'm one of the people that had the most clips in there, and his comments don't bother me in the least. Not everybody is going to like everything.

Besides, I learned a LONG time ago not to give two whits about what most people think about me and the things I do. I'm proud of what I created, that's good enough for me. If people like what I made, that's a bonus. If they don't, that's their damage. =)

Basically, we had two different people working on two different projects looking at the same clip.
That's a lack of quality control. I understand why it happened, but it doesn't change the fact that it did.

Your Excel Saga/Living Dead Girl clip was easily one of the best. I didn't care for some of your other works (namely your Advent Children bit), but that clip (along with the "I'm Only Sleeping", which happens to be one of my favorite songs by The Beatles) more than makes up for it. Not enough to salvage the project, but it was still good.

Thanks. My hubby's (Purplepolecat) favourite clip is the "Sleeping" one as well--I was happy I could find scenes that fit the song so well.

Everything is not always going to be everybody's cup of tea. Most of the time, I edit to make what *I* want to see, and if that turns out to be what somebody else wants to see too, then that's just the icing on the cake.

Besides, this would be a very boring world if we all always agreed on everything. =D
