AMV Minis Challenge #6: The 90s
Entry Period: Aug 21 - Sept 17
Let's take a blast back into the past for challenge number 6!
For this challenge, you must use BOTH an anime and audio source that are from the 1990s.
If you use a source that crosses decades, please use only parts (or at least MOSTLY the parts) that originally premiered during the 90s*.
*For anime sources we will go by the original Japanese air date.
You can look up a list of anime that qualifies here: http://www.animenfo.com/release/index.php?d=199000
Just change the dropdown box for the year AND month to browse.
Before creating your video, please be sure to read over the following page, which details the rules and explains how to submit your video:

Words cannot express how frustrating it is to be ****ed out of using a source because it's a year or two off...

I only saw JEM in the early 90's, along with Bravestar, He-Man and Bionic Six, yet...from the 80's...

Durn, soon as I saw the title I was all "I can do something with Zettai Boei Leviathan!" But then I saw the post and was all "awwwwwwww....." Leviathan looks like it's a 90's anime, but it's from this year :|
*edit* does it still count if it started airing in 1999, but finished in 2000?

Can we use HD versions of shows? When Said 90's shows didn't obviously have HD?
They're putting everything on remastered Blu-Ray discs these days, Fluffy.

Yes of course, as long as its just remastered and not a complete remake or something.

Depending on the show, you might be able to pick up a physical video of it. Some 90s shows can still be found on DVD, second-hand stores can provide a surprisingly good haul (several near where I live even have dedicated anime sections), and the Amazon Marketplace can turn up some good bargains too.

I'm mildly optimistic that this will force people to branch their sources out a bit.

Or force even MOAR Evangelion AMV's.
And give an excuse for Loli and Haar to use their preferred source choices...

Only 13 episodes of Hunter x Hunter and a pilot movie were made before 2000, Fist of the North Star is from the 80s, and then there's Stardust Crusaders, but that's a story for another day.

Or force even MOAR Evangelion AMV's.
Except that the use of Evangelion has been dropping off lately. AMV Hell 6.66 used it pretty sparingly, at least compared to the excess of it in 5. I think it's the same reason we don't see many Excel Saga or Azumanga Daioh AMVs now...pretty much every scene from those series has been used at some point. And if you noticed, a good number of the Evangelion clips in 6.66 were from the new movies, which have yet to be completely exploited, so to say.
I think I feel optimistic considering that 6.66 largely (not entirely, but largely) killed the extreme overuse of a few series and (mostly) avoided endlessly repeated scenes.

I think the best part of this challenge, is that the theme song for the 90s, Prince's "1999" was released in 1982. So you can't even use 1999 for the 90s challenge!

I've got an idea I'd like to try for this, but at the same time, the whole 'one entry per person' thing means that I'm gonna need a few days to decide if it's really the best I can come up with. I'd hate to submit something and then have a sudden flash of inspiration a couple days later.

Well you got a whole month to think of a clip, create it and turn it in... so I say you have time.

Can we use 90s cover of older songs?
kapparomeo
08-24-2013, 04:12 PM
Personally I'd be reluctant to do that - something like this is meant to evoke a spirit of the age, so a retread of a different decade would be against the spirit of the theme.

If the cover sounds kinda 90's-ish, I'd say its ok. If its almost a straight copy of the original, maybe not.

Got my materials, but now I gotta bigger problem. I can't use the files I have to make my AMV. I got the idea of what to do, but my Premiere Elements won't allow mkv files. All that time downloading, and now could be in vain.
Curse my technical impairments!
Get virtualdub and avisynth if you don't already have them, download FFmpeg2, and put it in your avisynth plugins folder. Presto.

Forgot. This is the internet. There are converters for free out there, so I got a mkv to mp4 converter to same some time.

My source is 4:3 DVD.
I can have Vegas upscale it to 720p
or I can give you standard 640x480.
Do you have a preference?
Zarxrax
09-08-2013, 11:09 AM
No need to upscale before sending it, 640x480 is fine.
adzman
09-08-2013, 04:06 PM
But you should upscale it right off the DVD for the best quality.

Had two ideas, but decided not to go with them. They were more AMV material than AMV Hell material, if you get my drift.
Luckily, I just remembered a 90s one hit wonder that would be perfect, though it was already one before in AMV Hell before. No matter, it's definitely comedy material.
