For giving me roughly HALF of my Anime recommendations just from me watching AMV Hell and going "Hey that one looks interesting to watch..." and voila, tvtropes is starting to edge in on your territory in that category but I think AMV Hell 5 just gave me 3-4 new series(s) to consider trying out:

First Squad ~Moment of Truth~
Vampire Hunter D
Welcome To The NHK
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Girl Who Leaped Through Time (Have the manga, didnt finish it yet will do so now after seeing the bloodier scenes in AMV 5)

And a few others just as soon as I find them in the credits.

AMV Hell is also what introduced me to Haruhi Suzumiya! Funnily enough for ALL the WRONG reasons :p *

*Basically the scenes were from AMV Hell 3 with her at the Live Alive chapter/concert so I assumed that the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was a anime about a Light Music club... Turns out it wasn't, funny that. Eventually I came upon tvtropes that says that Haruhi fans have a rivalry with K-On! fans so I assumed K-On! was similar to Haruhi but was actually about a Light Music club so I finally found what I was looking for!

Lol when I watched haruhi for the first time that one scene I knew it wasnt about a light music club but if you ask me k-on and haruhi are nothing alike :3

I know, that's what makes my misunderstood confusion funny, AMV Hell gave me the wrong impression of what the anime was about, but I watched it anyways because it was awesome, then I decided to watch K-On because tvtropes gave me the impression that their fanbase's are rivaling each other so I assumed K-On might be similar to Haruhi, only for it to be the light music club anime I was looking for in the first place!

Poor Zathras but at least there is symmetry.

Don't misunderstand me though I love both, K-On allows me to go past my cutesy anime quota thanks to the good premise and neat music.

Taken in careful amounts I generally like stories that are the whole "friends growing up, but there's a gimmick" kind of sticht.

Heck there's this novel I once read for English class that I wish would be adapted one of these days as the story was fairly touching, it was a short novel about these 4 friends, one of them just had a relative die who was cremated and the boys kinda get this temporary weird fascination with death and want to see someone die, so they find this old guy and start stalking him so they can see when he dies and see a dead person, only to be caught by this old person who they eventually befriend each other and the old guy becomes the glue that holds their friendship together.

I really want to find that book again now.

A Haruhi/K-on fan war? Why's that? I watched both series, and personally I like Haruhi better. Even I have my moe limits.

Although I really like the K-on music. I have it with me all the time on my Zune (apple products ftl) and listen the songs when I'm in the mood.

AMV Hell got me to watch some anime I was aware of, but never bothered to watch, such as Trigun and Excel Saga, both of which I love to death today. The community also got me to give Lucky Star a second chance, which made my opinion of the show change completely! Thanks, guys!

That's just the opinion I've read on TvTropes Where's TheresNoSuchThingAsNotability so if there is some kind of Kon/Haruhi war between their fanbase's I wouldn't know.

I'ld put Haruhi in my personal top ten of Best Anime's Ever, K-On while nice doesn't quite deserve that spot, I'ld put it in my top 20 though.
