It has always been "cool" to hate this song but the main reason this is **** is because doing a challenge around a single song, and an annoying one at that, leads it to being very repetitive. Also, some of the clips weren't the best of quality.

Nine months after the fact, “the fox” is remembered as the most popularly reviled challenge round so far. Is this reputation truly deserved?

Retro-review time.

Since the names of the creators are now known- I can hold-back a little in my critique and be super nice to my BFFs and extra mean to my enemies. (Nobody and everybody)


01 – Wut da Vulpix say? – I guess the joke here is supposed to be: “Vulpix is a fox Pokémon, get it?” Cute, but this observation hardly required a 36 second AMV.

Besides its length and lack of wit, the clip’s main fault lies in its pace and timing- the cut to the pokedex at 0:19 is late; the cut to Misty at 0:26 is late; Misty’s lip-syncing is horribly off at 0:32 and the 0:41 – 0:46 sequence is a bit of a muddle.
The general pace and energy of the video doesn’t match the song’s, this is bad synergy. Take the 0:19 – 0:25 sequence: all we see is a still shot of Vulpix. Very dull. It might have given the clip a bit more life to have had the pokedex-light flashes match the song.

This is coolstuf777’s only challenge entry to date.

02 – Wail – A song about Whale noises to video of a Whale… sig point (2).

03 – Diaoh ‘ready – No joke here either. Where’s the fox? Looks more like a practice at lip-syncing more than anything else.
On that note- Moon Spirit’s lip-syncing isn’t all bad but things do look muddy in places like 1:23 where some frames are too fast and look unnatural, then there’s the awkward break in the loop of Osaka rocking her head at 1:38 and again at 1:40.

Moon Spirit hasn’t submitted since Secret Santa, one has to wonder how far his/her lip-syncing has improved since then…

04 – Doggoes – Wow. To think this got even a single vote…
The dog goes… whatever the audio was that we can’t hear… then there’s no punchline, no synergy, no attempt to hide the subtitles... the lack of effort here is truly contemptible.
One of the very worst entries we’ve had in all of the challenges.

This is the last challenge N-TG has submitted to.

05 – Wut da Grey Fox say? – … I hate T4S.

06 – SAO Fox chamber – Points for creativity by Q here, but the overlay effect was clearly too much work for him/her and it needed more polish, there’s a really ugly flicker right before the transition frame hits that’s hard to ignore.
Besides that- obviously- the subtitles should have been cut out of both video sources.

07 – Animal list – Sig point (2), through and through.

08 – Froggoes – Long build up to a weak gag. Crazy frog. Yeah. That was a thing.

We’re halfway through the round and we’ve seen some bad stuff so far, clearly- this first half is all anybody remembers of “the fox” nowadays. Shame, because-

09 – Foxxx – Synergy! Effort! Humour! Crazy visuals match the crazy audio!
This is the second best entry of the challenge and a good AMV on its own.

-just what the hell are “sake badger” sound clips anyway? If I asked Doominus, would s/he know? You’re such a buffoon, Jinzo.

…but I have to hand it to you- this clip made me laugh out loud in the middle of the library as I watched it for the first time, and even to this day- yes, it can still amuse.
The laugh may well have mainly come from the fact that this is such a departure from the other entries, but still- it tells a joke and it wastes no time in doing so.

Jinzo’s best challenge entry to date.

11 – TryFox – The lip-syncing is a bit off, but the nutty dancing matches the song well enough. Short and sweet, as it should be.

12 – Foxrageous – The overlay on the TV screen is a little rough in some of the corners, but the effort is appreciated.
It has to be said… whether you love or hate Jem’s presence in these challenges… that not only is this the best Jem clip we’ve seen to date… it’s actually a good AMV overall.

Sadly for N.P.C.C.- this clip was entered 14 challenges too early.

13 – Wut da Squid say? – Unquestionably the funniest entry. The squid sounds syncing to the tentacles in the mouth was a nice touch. I love that look on Ichigo’s face at the end. Perfect.

14 – Random soundz – I love the contempt this clip shows towards the challenge.

15 – A remix!? Let’s vote this into second place! DERP – I would direct Shadowlion27 to signature point (2) but s/he isn’t entering any other challenges lately…

16 – Doorbell - …cute, but lazy. The button presses should have been synced to the song.

This is Olveparty’s only challenge entry.

Starting off with the actual song video was odd and off-putting, for sure, but then it cuts to whatshername obviously mouthing the words to the song (thereby explaining why the original video was used), then to Ed who watches her mouth the words to the song and become distressed and terrified... which is the joke. In the anime, Ed was horrified by a little girl melded with her dog. In the clip, that is still true, but she's also mouthing the words to the most annoying stupid song ever which is somehow even more terrifying.

It's dark comedy, like the much maligned clip from the country music challenge where the character from Fate/Whatever started choking his woman to death to a song about a woman who only bitches when she breathes... is it wrong? totally. Still funny though, in a dark way. Need to have some dark comedy man, cause these parts of these anime are just so freaking dark and depressing. Ed watching a little girl abused and need to be destroyed, that guy from Fate having to kill the girl he loves or something like that.


That said, I agree subtitles were unnecessary, but I feel like it was more of a deliberate choice rather than an accidental thing. and it probably was a less-actual-work-involved kind of clip, but I dunno...

Okay, wow, I completely did not see ANY of this. Probably the biggest problem was that both audio sources were playing simultaneously. If you were going for this approach, then you needed to mute the audio from the original clip. This approach also doesn't seem very funny to me; it's just Ed being terrified at the song.

The impression I got was that you were implying the dog says "Daddy", ala:

So it starts off misleading with the live action (not entirely a bad thing...but it never pays off here) and then has suuuuper close up's in letterbox cutting off the mouth of the dog/girl hybrid which I assume was to use the lyrics which only distract from the faint hint that there is lip syncing going one. Worst of it is they kept the original audio in and thus it is a jumbled mess.

Maybe if they used FMA to lead in with like the father of the daughter or such then flashed to AND UN LETTERBOXED CLIP then the joke may have carried. It looks like super lazy editing on a decent idea.

I only disliked 1, 2 and 7.

1 was too long for something that didn't appear to have a joke (until I realized much later that the pokémon shown was supposed to be a fox). The song for 2 wasn't funny and the clip didn't help it, either. 7 was literal to the point of boring.

The rest of the clips ranged from decent to incredibly good. In particular, I love how warped 4 was. I decided the dissonance of the two tracks playing simultaneously enhanced the feeling of how ****ed up the clip was.

For all the hate directed toward the song and toward the extremely narrow scope of the challenge, as a group, you came up with a plethora of funny ideas. Compare this to Original Audio, where everyone effectively had limitless creative power and failed to make a single good clip. Creative restraint is your friend; it most certainly didn't break you here.
