If you were to recommend an anime, to someone who doesn't care about or watch anime, what would you choose.
I would pick Akira and Grave of the Fireflies.
(I got thinking about this in another topic)

High School of the Dead, because everyone loves gore and crazy zombie killing.. And if you don't then you probably like woman who can't seem to cover their enormous boobs with their tiny amounts of tight clothing.

hmm... something that doesnt represent anime as a whole, because alot of people dont like anime because of its strange Japanese characteristics. Death Note is excelent because its smart. otherwise Trigun.
things that might throw people off is what makes anime, anime. so with that said, ease them in with something that has fairly good animation, and doesnt sway heavy with common Japanese customs (like highschools with girls in miniskirts for example)

I think everything depends on a person who is going to watch it ( is that person searching for something new and original or just wants to kill a time?).

Me and most of my friends got into it with Code Geass.
I got into anime first when in elementary school a friend brought a Gundam Wing model to build, and I thought it was the coolest looking thing I have ever seen.

well gundam got me sure, but ima say trigun, cowboy bebop, fma, death note and let's say.... Haruhi Suzumiya. now my all time fav is trigun, cowboy bebop is second, and key the metal idol/scrapped princess is third. but fma was amazing and most can get into it, plus it shows how anime can make awesome ideas for rl come to life, haruhi is cuz it goes from everyday stuff to crazy outthere showing the span of anime, plus well done, and then death note, do to story plot sucking you in, amazingly done and good popularity, which for newbies matters. plus with the dark and mysteriousness, its like anime emo/nightmare before christmas which every new gen loves more and more

I would not recommend starting with Lucky Star. Too many cultural jokes and anime references.
I would pick one of Miyazaki's films. Any of them, they're all fantastic.

First thing that comes to mind is Cowboy Bebop. It's pretty much void of any of the stereotypes anime is often plagued with here in the States. Full Metal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell (despite my feelings for it) are also keen choices. For an open-minded friend, I'd also point them to the Hetalia: Axis Powers Dub. Everyone loves offensive humor.
Isn't Miyazaki films cheating? XD

Miyazaki films thats not cheating.
personaly i think you have to be a fan of anime to watch them.
yeah full metal alchemist would be a good choice for getting into anime.

Lucky Star or K-On arent good animes to get into it
cuz, if someone starts watching lucky star could say "too much ANIME REFERENCE!!, i dont understand -.-''
I am think that the best genre of anime to get into it is Shonen, cuz no matter who is, everybody likes it...
maybe FMA, Death Note, Dragon Ball, Bleach etc...

maybe some of them are a bit too weird (totoro/ponyo) for someone who's not into anime, but they're still fantastic.
I remember watching spirited away in english class once. I felt so proud that I was one of the few people that had seen it. Then the teacher's told everyone "it's a japanese cartoon, so the character's mouths won't match up with the english voices."
That brought me off my high horse, I had never noticed before. >.>
