Participating in AMV hell 5 was a blast, but I found it difficult for me to participate due to the fact that I could not rip the video from my anime DVDs. I had to result to hard subs to make some of my AMVs, that meant I had to either ignore the subs, put bars over them, or not use footage that has the subs. What programs do people use to rip DVDs because I could only make 1 amv to lucky star with torrented files yet I have the entire series on DVD.

I don't have a good process for ripping DVD's, but I do have one for using soft sub sources if you're interested.

AMVapp has a few means of ripping footage, though I tend to just search for DVDrips for (relative) ease.

I'll be updating the guide on animemusicvideos.org in the next week or two, and I will also be posting a different, simpler (but not a replacement) guide here.
