The one and only. Not sure how many of those things they did make however. Seems the Checker we know wasn't exactly mass-produced. They only did about 6-8K a year. Slow build. Must have been a small plant.

I think woodgrain was nearly a standard feature on these.
They were powered by the venerable 225 'Slant Six' or the legendary 318 V8.
This example appears to be a 6-cylinder. Note the tall-ish and offset air filter.
In any case, the only thing more annoying about these cars than their looks
was the whiny sound of their gear-reduction starters.

Veran

They were trying to ape the W123 look.

http://www.carsbase.com/photo/Mercedes_Benz-E_Class_W123_mp35_pic_76641.jpg

That body style had a nice 9 year run. The best design Mercedes Benz ever had. Not too big, not too small (unless you tried putting adults in the back seat), enough power with the E230 engine and automatic is mandatory in those things. You could use them as manual if you could be bothered.

Fairly economical both for the time and for the marque.

Comfy, sweet ride, sort of like a very small Crown Vic. Feels rock solid too.

Seriously, a 1957 Bel Air had more power per cubic inch than a 1988 Aries. Or any American car until... 200X. American car tech regressed between 1957 and 1990, it seems.

I see wire ties and some extra primaries running around the bay. I'm sure that
you could literally, literally rewire the whole thing in an afternoon.
I would upgrade the alternator and run a ground bus through the chassis.
You will need to do something about the heater motor and ducts.

Chrysler LeBaron. Wheels highly unlikely to fall off. Has V8. Also some rather questionable design choices...

But rolls along nice, comfortable, Feels solid. Not hard to park like the massive barges it replaced. Then got replaced by the K-cars, which were not really as good in any way... apart from handling. Other than that they were actively worse.

But still, even those things did retain the wheels for the duration of their lifetime.

Ugh. Usually one replaces the timing belt *before* it might break. Bloody expensive to have that done, even in cheap cars. Weirdly cheap in Lexus, for some reason.

The roads used to be full of these things. They started disappearing around 1994, and I haven't seen one for 10 years now. 12-15 years, a good run for a cheap 80ies car. The only thing that did better was Ford Fairmont. There were fewer of those imported, way back in 1978, and by 1997, there were more of them than of the BMW E21. As in, they were still to be seen at all.

American: cheap parts. Makes all the difference.

Turns out that it WASN'T the belt. A bolt holding one of the belt idlers broke and caused a bit of havoc. I suspect it puked some ball bearings which caused the inevitable result.

Broke an ignition trigger tooth on the timing drive sprocket too

Welp you just might as well scrap the whole car... Since you have an interference engine it's classified as blown at this point :D

Picked up some resurfaced heads, mls head gasket, new pullies and timing belt. Smoothed out the pistons where they slapped the valves and cleaned off the carbon build up. Put it all back together along with a new clutch on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago. Already put 1,500 miles/2,400 km on it.

EJ's are stupid easy to work on.

I was only joking, nice to hear you got it back up in short order...
also if your water pump is on the timing belt you might want to replace that also since it's a bearing component if you haven't already... not worth having all new parts go to **** because of one component.

Yeah I had to replace that because that idler that failed was bolted to it. When it failed, it ****ed up the threads in the water pump casting so I went ahead and replaced it.

Grandmother's neighbor had one. It was perked beside her house (on the neigbors lot) for more than 15 years. He ran it from time to time - once he removed the engine and moved it into his basement for repairs using a system of home-made rails and pulleys.

There's a truck of similar vintage (not sure if Studebaker) rusting away in somebody's yard in our county.

There used to be an IH Scout 2 with a decent body sitting in the yard of an abandoned business down the road from us, was seriously considering offering to take it off their hands but it disappeared before I could figure out who I'd have to ask about it.

$500 for the car. Another $250 for a front clip that he installed.
With paperwork and all that, he has less than a grand in a car

You have to adjust for inflation:

Right now, the tyres alone could be worth $1700. Back in 1955, you could get a whole lot of stuff for a dollar.

Oh I know, but Scouts are also really popular which drives the price up more. Could have picked a good one up in the late 80s/early 90s for a few grand, wish I had jumped before the 'vintage' label kicked in.

The Land Rover is OK if you can and are willing to fix it yourself. They are fairly cheap to maintain, but break down every week, minimum. Personally, I'd prefer a large Bronco or a C5 Chevy, but those are near impossible to find my side of the pond.

Scout is a better car though... A CJ is a better car. Almost everything is.

I could get a Toyota Hilux fairly easy, but those things are overpriced, or a Suzuki Vitara or a Jimny, but then I'd have to deal with higher taxes... those overshadow even Land Rover maintenance costs.

But I'd have a technically better vehicle.

Veran

Timing chains last very long. Extra long if you maintain them properly. And it's a Suzuki: it should be rather simple. Around here you just take them to the dealers, where they know how to fix this sort of thing. (And timing chains aren't exactly the ultimate problem with these things.)

Belts break every 100K kilometers or 4-5 years. An annoying cost, that.

https://res.cloudinary.com/carsguide/image/upload/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto,t_cg_hero_large/v1/editorial/dp/albums/album-1414/lg/Kia-Sportage-1999-1.jpg

Similar thing, gives a somewhat more comfortable ride in town. If timing chains are that much of an issue...

And also carry around three large dogs into the mountains.

Those are fairly popular.

Running costs... not much. But bloody expensive to buy. New or used. A new Land Cruiser 120 (here) will cost like 3 brand new Suzuki Jimnys. A 10 year old Land cruiser 90 with 230K+ on it, they demand 3X as much as for pretty much anything else. And worst of all: everybody originally bought a diesel. No way I'm getting something like that. Can't afford an engine failure with that, and where I live, I' will have some (diesel's don't last long in short distance driving conditions.)

A used Landcruiser 200 will be fine, but those drive like Scania Vabis.

The alternative is... ??? Do the Suburbans even work anymore? I'm told the larger Ford SUVs are good still.

They don't do big very well these days, do they?

Large, roomy, reasonably reliable... completely impossible to get. (Sort of the Land Cruiser before there was the Land Cruiser)

The Lexus is mechanically identical to a Land Cruiser 100 and costs between $14-$20k. But get this, even though the LX is an upmarket Cruiser, the Toyota is twice as much as the Lexus.

And a Defender in the States is getting close to 6 figures in the used market. I like them, never driven one though, but I've heard they're dismal to drive.

You can tell by my screen name that I'll never drive a GM and I was originally looking for a 2007+ Ford Expedition before I found out the Lexus was the same price.

If you can get a Lexus Land Cruiser for the same price as a Ford Expedition... take it. They have better quality control. Otherwise it's the same basic thing. (Both are basically glorified Ford Broncos)

A Defender is way overpriced here as well. Not worth it. Not worth what they went for new. Not really worth what they went for in England when they were new (half price), because you could get a Hilux, which was a much better car for about the same.

Dismal? Well... it's an off road vehicle, made to be driven over trackless farmland, not on roads. So... a tractor.

Unsafe at any speed as well.

Only worth it if you can get one at proper old car price, and intend to drive it over some hills. And enjoy fixing stuff.

Ooh! 4.6 V8! Smooth.

I figure I'll start saving up for a new car. Seems they are beginning to make acceptable vehicles again. (The 90ies were a horror, and went on and on...)

Kia Optima is comfortable and high tech - maybe a bit too hi-tech. It's heavy. But comfy.

https://www.honda.com.au/content/dam/honda/cars/models/civic-sedan/honda-new_civic_sedan.png

Honda Civic is more sporty, and more traditionally built. It is also marginally more affordable.

The Mercedes Benz of 1979 is cheap and reliable and stands out on the parkinglot.

I recently saw one of these at a car show...

http://st.automobilemag.com/uploads/sites/11/2016/04/Koenigsegg-Regera-prototype-rear-three-quarter-01-660x440.jpg

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/m61GQd_rOwA/maxresdefault.jpg

It's a Koenigsegg Regera, a Swedish 'Hybrid Super Car' that pushes out 1,500 horse power but the kicker is it has no transmission for it's gasoline engine. It uses a hydraulic fluid compression/reduction system. It sounds amazing and the concept of no transmission turns me on.

It uses a hydraulic fluid compression/reduction system.

A torque converter in other words. Same as any other automatic, but in this instance, the electric motor takes up the slack of having no gears.

Had my first flat tire in like 25 years this week. Hole was in sidewall so I had to replace tire, did the L/R pair since they were getting low on tread anyway. Wallet is a little battered but have some nice new tires.

My Honda had a catastrophic failure: leaking head-gasket, leaking water veins, leaking transmission, brake failure... the list goes on. Rust... one door doesn't open (never has) there's only 15 bolts holding the wheels on, no rear-wipe, funny grating noises sometimes...

I was wondering: how would one go about building the most reliable car?

I mean, auto-makers sometimes just buy their engines and other parts from specific companies and assemble the parts under their own logo, so why should the average guy not be able to do that also?

Begin with a chassis: anything works, as they don't really have moving, malfunction prone parts. Get anything and just rust-proof it properly.

Here's one: http://www.moonlightdriveclassics.com/classic-car-bodies/ford/1968-ford-mustang-convertible/

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/65/f6/41/65f641a5e1e7aff322e96520a6ff7866.jpg

This is what your car will look like.

Pros: Light weight, you only really need 120 HP to have fun, all body panels are still manufactured, replacement no problem, good styling, big enough for most.
Cons: safety? Ehm... no.

Engines...

The original Ford was reliable for the time. But that time was 1968, and now is 2019. We got internet and phones that are smarter than our politicians. 1968 reliability simply won't cut it.

We could just insert a Toyota 3ZR-FAE 2.0 L, like the RAV4, good for 140 HP. Enough. Mated with a 6 speed manual. Should be fun. Or some archaic automatic. Toyotas have them covered. Anything but a CVT. That's sanskrit for "mechanic retirement fund."
There's a 2.5 version that has more output, and known to be perfectly reliable. Toyotas have a timing chain. One shouldn't need to open the hood much.

Or a Fiat Multijet II diesel. We need somesort of an automatic transmission on that. Opting for the less powerful 2 liter, we won't really need a Lincoln transmission, but with the 2.5 we will need one of those rather desperately. Or a Mercedes Benz automatic from the W123. Either way, that power and a car that small will mean drifting around corners. With a diesel. A super reliable diesel.
