Detailed thoughts:

#1: Very clever NES dirty cart effect, and the perfect song to go with it! If only the anime that was used contained more VG-related and/or had a scene that went along with "Dude looks like a lady" but it's still a good start!

#2. I can relate to this one more often than I should...

#3. Meh.

#4. I don't get the Video game reference here.

#5. Decent. Somewhat better than #3.

#6. I didn't get the Video game reference until I read the credits... Ironically, I used to be a HUGE Command & Conquer fan back in the day, but I stopped playing when C&C Generals came out. People who played Generals could get more of a kick out of this than I did.

#7. At first I thought both clips were Evangelion clips, with an Anime version on the left and a Video Game version on the right... Then I saw the end. Ripping of Gainiax much, Squaresoft? I've always had a thing for Ripoffs/Switched-at-birth comparisons, so I like this.

#8. My childhood memories of playing Goldeneye on the N64..... RUINED!!!!

#9. Technically, this is a decently-made clip and it's executed well.... but it isn't terribly clever, either. Kind of reminds me of #5 in a way.

#10. I never played quake, so I can't accuratly judge this one... but it seems to be well-executed and clever.

#11. I see what they were trying to go for, but the song doesn't quite work well enough. A song that was more dramatic/epic/heavy with a larger buildup would have been better. Bonus points for Metroid Prime, though.

#12. A whole new meaning of "Nintendo Hard".... nice.

#13. As with #6, I didn't get the Video Game reference until I saw the credits (FPSes aren't my thing), so I really can't judge this one. Battlefield fans should be able to, however.

#14. LOLWUT

#15. A good example of the sum being less than its parts.

#16. Ocarina of time was a favorite of mine back in the day, but I don't remember the commercials for some reason. Pretty decent mix of the commercial and Azumnaga Daioh. They used the UK version of the OoT CM; I think it would've better if they used the US version, which replaces the "Willst thou get the girl? Or die trying?" with "Willst thou soar? or Willst though suck?", which could've lead to some pretty interesting opportunities with A. Daioh source material.

#17. This clip sucks; Please read this post. (http://www.amvhell.com/showthread.php?28922-AMV-Minis-Challenge-26-WATCH-amp-VOTE!&p=545064#post545064)

#18. *EAR RAPE ADVISORY* this clip also sucks, but at least it contains something that's VG-related.

#19. Random, short, and funny, but again, I didn't get the video game reference until I read the credits.

#20. This one sticks out from all the other clips if only because it uses footage from one of the earliest 16-bit console CD games (Last Alert for the Turbografx-16), resulting in somewhat pixelated visuals with limited animation and heavy letterboxing. It's a bit jarring at first, but this is one of the more original clips in this challenge, tying together a famous action-packed 80s movie classic with an early console CD game that's infamous for it's hilariously bad voice acting. There are some lip-synching issues, but Last Alert never had good lip-synching to begin with. Very clever overall.

#21. Decent.

#22. Clever.

#23. LOLWUT #2.

#24. Heh.

#25. This could've been good if the singer actually knew how to sing. Her singing alone ruins this clip.

#26. Yes, it sure is an ugly-ass baby.

#27. I like how the music is from Plants vs. Zombies and how it refers to zombies, all while sounding easy and laid back, which is ironic. The High School of the dead footage works well and only adds to irony.

#28. The only other other clip besides #20 that aims for a more retro vibe. As much as I despise Jem, the clip is well-made, with the AVGN expressing my own feelings about JEM quite accurately.

OVERALL: 1, 2, 7, 10 12, 16, and 20 are the best contenders IMO.

Summary for those who went tl;dr over my detailed thoughts: 1, 2, 7, 10, 12, 16, and 20 were my favs.

I agree with the first half of that as I felt the joke of blowing into the game cartridge would have been better if it used an anime that was more of a video game, instead of a guy who plays video games all the time dressed as a girl (not that far from it though :3 )

My likes/favs are 3, 5, 12, 24, and 25 (didn't even watch 28, for reasons I'm sure most of you guys will understand lol). Voted for one of those five.

To the whole class:

14 – Why the yellow border from 6.66? – This whole self-referencing fad is getting ancient…

It started as early as challenge no.1 (http://youtu.be/w37jI_E3FXQ?t=5m40s) with Frazer’s “Go the distance” MV. It was an inside joke, but the challenge topic happened to be “AMV Hell” so it was more than applicable to the brief, not to mention genuinely original and amusing.
Then we had Urahara’s Azumanga Apology in challenge no.9 (http://youtu.be/R5EVmgL6QZY?t=1m49s) which acknowledged the audience’s rotten reception of the Fox (which was the preceding challenge, so the timing couldn’t have been better).
Finally, we had that entry in challenge no.19 (http://youtu.be/gwSt1An-2ks?t=55s) which acknowledged and poked fun at the audience’s rotten reception of Jem, which had been building up over a number of months. The iron was hot and the timing worked.
This was the last time the idea was put to any kind of half-amusing use.

If you’re going to reference AMV Hell or AMV Hell politics in any way, please try to be fresh and funny about it, or better yet- just don’t.

This is a lame entry.

Yeah, we get it, lots of the AMVs contributed by this community suck. Entries like these aren’t helping.
Help raise the standard a little by making a good AMV for a change. At the very least- refrain from polluting these challenges even further with rubbish like this.

28 – HOLY FK IT’S TEH AVGN LOL – You know, it was cute when N.P.C.C. did this the first time in the Fox challenge ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqouzDSN5Ig&feature=youtu.be&t=3m52s), but entries like these seriously need to stop.

Amazingly, I’m not actually referring to the (un/ironic) use of Jem in AMVs.

I’m referring to the general concept of entries like these- where you take a barely edited video source with no joke/observation/statement and tack on a hilarious, unrelated reaction video for insta-lulz.

Clips like these are creatively bankrupt. It’s bad enough that Madevil got away with it in the Country challenge (http://youtu.be/6sAOqCP0Wts?t=7m17s).

Why don’t we all just slap this little nugget onto the end of every future AMV?:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va5_rn3vG3A

Hilarious, right? And no effort required on your part.

I’m an AMV comedy genius.

Anyway- this is a weak entry.
We get it, everybody hates Jem. Har har har.
We’ve covered this already ( http://youtu.be/gwSt1An-2ks?t=55s). Again ( http://youtu.be/zTb9-fSb-vE?t=2m43s) and again ( http://youtu.be/6sAOqCP0Wts?t=5m25s).

<sigh>

To the newbies:

My signature is there to help you.

05 – TMNT 2 – See signature point (1). AMV Hell 1, Clip 10 (http://tinyurl.com/pxxht5m). Zarxrax did it better… ten years ago.

26 – It’s an ugly baby, I guess – Point (1). AMV Hell 4, clip 17 (http://tinyurl.com/pxxht5m).

06 – A piece? No thanks – Point (2). Long and pointless. Bad entry.

11 – All I see is darkness – Point (2).

13 – I find it kinda sad – Point (2).

To the more experienced editors:

01 – Lady looks like a dude – This was a clever choice of audio, the false starts to the song actually played into the concept quite well. I’ve never seen that video effect before (0:25-0:29), that worked nicely too.
Those two aspects aside however– this was clip was a long build up to a rather flat punchline. He’s a transvestite… yeah… so? I may be British, but contrary to popular belief- even we know that’s not comedy in and of itself.
There were also some noticeable ghost frames in the footage, which should be an obvious no-no. See signature point (6).
A couple of nice ideas, but an average entry overall.

04 – Buzerk – A real do-nothing entry.
I can’t say I appreciate the effort you put in to making this because you clearly didn’t have to put much in. I’m guessing that lip syncing probably wasn’t very difficult for you.
Still- none of that really matters as long as the gag is good, but this one just didn’t tickle me.
I saw the black frame! Point (5).
Not “bad”, just forgettable.

Still- we can take some solace in the fact that you know how to hold a still frame. It’s amazing how many editors here can’t even do that properly.

07 – Evangelion Repeating – I don’t think we needed 37 seconds to learn that an influential Chinese cartoon influenced a vidya gaem. Weak entry.

09 – Type-Moon Volley Ball – This might have been an okay entry if you had a better sense of timing and editing…
Seems like you were trying to sync-up the video to the lyrics at 3:18 with that cut to the walking cat thing, but you should have just went straight into a montage of bikini and volley ball action. To hell with the lyrics, they didn’t add anything.
Lingering a shot on a character who is lip-flapping when they aren’t speaking/singing the song is a bad idea, if you can’t remove the lip-flaps you should cut to something else or draw our attention elsewhere.
We see two title cards, one at 3:16 then another at the end. You should have cut the first one out, it’s redundant. Adding “Type-moon” to the last title card was a nice (small) detail however.
You’re a capable editor. Just keep at it.

10 – Cowboy FPS – Something about the choice of audio clips here just seemed lacking, they were way too monotone. Just wasn’t funny.
Even that “Refrain from shooting me in the ass” line… that just felt forced.

12 – Trigger – A good idea, but went on longer than it should have.
You probably could have cut out the first few seconds and started the clip at 4:43, jumped straight into the action as it were. Everything after 5:01 should have been cut. That shot of Eiko slicing her finger at 4:51 might have made a better image to end on, like she was rage-quitting.
Not bad.

16 – Ocarina of Daioh – there’s a good idea in here, it just had a few problems with its execution…
Sakaki is the “hero” of the narrative, making Kaorin “the girl”, but that shot of Kaorin at 6:09 initially casts her in the hero’s role. “Willst [she] flee?” It’s not until right after the “Or die trying?” card that the roles are concrete; but the fact that it’s Kaorin who wakes up from the dream screws up the roles again. It should have been Sakaki who woke up from what was her fantasy…
There were also a few editing nitpicks- like the rapid and uneven timings of the 4 girls at the start, the ghost frame right before the “Or fight” card, and the horse’s galloping cycle is jerky in places. See point (6).
Bit of a muddled editing job and the ending was anticlimactic, but the synergy is there. Not a bad entry.

17 – LOL YUNO IS CRAZY – Yeah, we get it, Yuno is crazy. If you’re going to make such a bland and predictable observation in an AMV at least have the decency to use a more pithy song and don’t use cropped footage you acquired through the realplayer video downloader. Point (6).
Bad entry.

19 – Ass pucked – No prizes for classiness, but at least this was snappy and made a non-esoteric joke. No complaints here.

20 – Rambo – You could have altered the size of the picture in a lot of places and filled out the screen better. Lip syncing could have also been improved. Why didn’t you use the Rambo trailer by itself? Cutting in actual source audio like that just subtracted from the clip’s creativity.
I see the connection, just not a particularly funny entry.

21 – SAOer puss – So, the speaker is talking about slicing stuff up and the video shows Kirito slashing a sword around… that’s not clever, or funny, its barely even synergy. It’s just lazy.
You made no attempt to show Kirito landing a “perfect blow”, “cutting open a chest” and or yelling in time with the audio. I haven’t seen all of SAO but even I know there are better scenes you could have used to show these things.
Lousy effort. Bad entry.

24 – Toy borey – Well, that was educational. Shame it wasn’t funny or entertaining in the slightest.

25 – She plays games I guess – Tomoko likes to play games… that’s the joke?
If you’re going to make an AMV similar to one of mine ( http://youtu.be/exaPhqJz3KQ?t=36s), at least try to do a better job, please.
Lame entry.

27 – Zombies…meh – There’s a zombie on the lawn and the song is called “There’s a zombie on your lawn”… that’s the joke? Lame entry.

But we don't need jokes that have already been done with a different coat of paint slapped on so they fit with another theme. We need fresh ideas and new material. It's okay to reuse old stuff if you put a new spin on it. Otherwise you're just like those kids on deviantart who recolor an existing image and try to say it's their original character.

The Cowboy Bebop clip is the same idea as done in AMV Hell 3? with Counter Strike radio commands, while this time it is America's Army and different new jokes made. The Metal Gear Rising Ninja Rap is just the same with a new paint, in fact not as well done as the first one, (not saying the first one was great, serviceable/decent so to do worse.....)

This is exactly the point. And as I think on it, I've seen quite a few attempts to justify subpar jokes with the excuse "But it fits the theme..."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the theme should not be the only qualification for whether or not you hit that submit button. The theme is put in to make the minis "challenges"; in other words, more difficult because you can't just send whatever the **** you want. Meeting the theme might be all it takes for an accepted clip, but that's not all it takes to make a good clip. For that, you need to have decent editing skills, consider the clip in the context of the AMV Hell franchise as a whole and see if it adds something new and/or fresh, and manage to have some actual ****ing comedy. You can submit a clip that fails on these points, but be prepared when it gets called out for it.

For the tl;dr: Forget the ****ing theme. Worry about making a good clip first, THEN ask yourself if it fits the challenge.

milleniummaster18
10-20-2014, 07:30 PM
You don't want to go as far as clip 19 went, however, where the joke is tangentially related to gaming. If your clip doesn't show any sign of the theme, then it's likely not appropriate for the challenge. 19 is a relatively decent clip in any other place but in this challenge.

He was the winner of the last challenge, the last one after that, and the last one after that. If that's not how it's done...

And it's not just mere happenstance, they're good ideas with relatively good executions. He's on a roll.

I agree that his reasoning is rather peculiar at times and condescending all around, but some of his remarks are spot on. It'd be wise for some folks to not completely dismiss them, lest they wallow in their own mediocrity.

Agreed, but that's where Zarx should be using the stamp of denial. If the only requirement for the challenges is meeting the theme and the clip doesn't meet that requirement, it should get rejected no matter how good it is otherwise. It can be saved and resubmitted later for another challenge it does work in.

#1 (Although the "actual" AMV seemed dreadfully bland and overused (not sure if this was intentional or not...), it was an interesting spin to the "Video game" theme with some pretty good effects to go with it...), #14 (Dunno, there's something so deliciously evil about implementing a Jem-based currency here at AMV Hell to be able to skip through the plethora of long and unfunny clips. Still, I think it could have worked better by placing the clip at the end of the entire video...) and #19 (Short, handful of seconds-long clips have always been a staple of AMV Hell, and generally tend to be my favorites. No exception here. Guess I'm just a huge fan of quick and snappy humor...) worked best for me.

As for the rest... *Shrugs* Eh? Not that big a fan of this episode, I guess...

Also, as a side-note, it's pretty hard to make "Let's Play"s work as an audio source; the delivery usually isn't as crisp as the one of a more professional comedic source and, unless the word-choice is particularly funny, it's hard to laugh unless you know exactly what the audio was originally referring to...

After a few watches, the clip that consistently made me laugh was 20, don't know why, never heard of the game, but I love Rambo, and terrible voice acting. So yeah, voted that one.

Don't make me buy a Wii U. Mewtwo's comeback into the forth game was almost enough.

I was drunk when I first saw this challenge, and for some reason I really dig 17, I was about to vote it when in the last second my brain put 2+2 together and said "wait a minute, what does it have to do with gaming?" so I change my vote for a correct entry.
and I know I'll sound stupid (maybe I am, don't really care xD), but I really liked the concept of #17 tho, even sober.
xD

and btw really good entries this time, kudos to all the authors!. :D

1. Brings nostalgia to the overall feeling of gaming back in the 90s, though it's rather odd it's trying to load an anime rather than a game. Still, the overall impression is quite effective.

2. Another part of gaming that's either remembered fondly or frowned upon, depending on how tolerant you are of gaming euphoria. I personally am quite fond of it, especially when the achievement made quite lives up to its hype. Very well done.

3. Execution is good, though the joke doesn't carry as much punch as it could, and then it lags on after the punchline...

4. Good timing, but overall very lazy. If the video doesn't help on the dynamic of the overall project, perhaps you shouldn't use it in the first place.

5. Fitting, with some sense of rhythm, but not enough. Additional points off for reversing a clip very sloppily.

6. Propaganda for I don't ****ing care, not captivating nor funny.

7. Kind of amusing, but overall very weak. Observations are somewhat interesting when you point them out, the trick is to weasel in a joke based on that observation.

8. You've got to know your James Bond games (or at least the tune) for this one. Needless to say, the red river flows perfectly. Nicely done.

9. You know, you had pretty big shoes to fill in with this being very similar to that clip in AMV Hell 7, which dealt with the same thing. Obviously, you didn't manage to do so successfully. Sloppy timing, sloppy scene correlation with the audio, sloppy intentions (you want a lip sync video, or what?), overall a goddamn mess.

10. You may need the original music and sound effects for the mood, but you don't need the dub voices. I personally would've cut the whole "incapacitated" scene as it just breaks the overall feel of the video. Good idea, floppy execution.

11. She went into the light, hilarious. Where's your joke again?

12. Could use some work on the sync between audio and video. Not to mention, the overall reverse right at the end. Decent altogether.

13. It conveys the scene pretty well, I suppose. Suffers similar drawbacks as clip 19.

14. This entry delves into the whole controversy that is pay 2 win games and micro-transactions, while adding an AMV Minis Challenge spin to the concept. Pretty clever.

15. It has been said by quite some folk: putting a song that talks about a flower set to an anime that depicts a flower does not necessarily equal comedy. If you haven't been convinced by this previous statement yet, then I present to you this clip as an example.

16. Effective on its representation, though I don't really relate to its subject matter.

18. Ebin maymay.

19. Really good clip. A shame it only barely has something to do with gaming. Oh well...

20. I get that cutscene lipsync back the was garbage, but that's one of those things I can live without ever seeing again. Decent execution.

21. A barely related anime fighting scene set to a song? **** that, I have a barely related anime fighting scene set to a piece of dialogue! Top that ****! Don't. **** is this clip.

Bu-but he slices his chest! Yeah, you want a ****ing prize for that?

22. I guess the overall dissonance between audio and video does have some humorous effect, with emphasis on "some".

23. You know, it's rather fitting. I guess that's always going to be the issue with game footage, though: not as easy to manage in terms of rhythm and sync as drawn animation. Still, pretty good.

24. Good execution and mildly amusing.

25. Works well.

26. It is, though your predecessor did better.

27. I'm tired of zombies just as much as I'm tired of people who think **** like this is funny.

28. I've got to admit, I chuckled at this one. Well done. I can't refute Chaz's point about Mad's earlier winning entry being equivalent to this one, as they are similar ideas. I guess I'm not a fan of the humor in Beavis and Butthead as much as I'm appreciative of the Angry Video Game Nerd's expressive humor. In my defense, the production's a step better in this clip.

Overall, it's a relatively decent set of entries. There's some very good clips in this batch. Needless to say, the rest can certainly do better. Keep it up, even though 27 is looking to be ****. Good going on that one, Einsteins.

111 votes? That’s disappointing.

You’d think there would be some buzz left over from H7, and a little more interest for a theme such as vidya gaems…

Oh well, at least a creative entry succeeded. The system works. Again.

We can also take solace in the fact that the majority of the Game Grump and James Rolfe fans on the tube couldn’t figure out the registration process for this forum.

Wow... Considering this is only my 2nd AMV Hell entry ever, I'm shocked that my video was in the top 1/3 of all the submissions vote-wise (and technically tied for 5th place with 14 and 23). Then again, I'm also surprised at the lack of creativity in many of the clips in this challenge... why can't there be more clips like the Sonic/Sound of the Skies from AMV Minis S1 Ep11 and Metal Slug/FLAG from AMV Minis S2 Ep07? But I digress...

To the more experienced editors:
...

First off, thanks for considering me an experienced editor after just 2 vids. I'm flattered :*

That being said, I have to disagree with you about resizing the pictures, but only because that is exactly how they appear in the original Last Alert game. 99% of the time I would agree with your argument, but I wanted to keep the visual portion as close to the original as possible for this entry. Those pics would look like crap if I made them bigger anyway (Plus there would be quite a few angry Last Alert/Turbografx-16 fans if I blew those pictures up).

I do agree with improving the lip sync... not that the lip synching wasn't much better in the original game (though it is indeed better...barely)

As for the audio, I think that cutting in the source audio greatly adds to the clip's creativity. You have to understand that Last Alert does two things extremely well: Ripping off Rambo and providing some of the best examples of it's-so-bad-it's-good voice acting in the history of video games. Using the Rambo trailer with Last Alert voice clips mixed in was a natural fit for this IMO.

I can't help but get the feeling you've never actually seen a Last Alert gameplay video (if you even heard of Last Alert before this challenge, LOL!). That being said, I do appreciate and respect your critiques, especially with the details you provide. I'll admit, Last Alert is somewhat of an obscure game, but had the Turbografx-16 been more successful, my clip would have generated more attention. Oh well, I'm just happy my clip ranked as high as it did, considering it was only my 2nd entry.
