While I'm not exactly an anime/manga virgin, I am very much far from being an expert.
So I need help in finding anime to watch and manga to read. You can find my anime and manga lists in my sig.

You're likely better served reading through the What anime are you watching right now (http://www.amvhell.com/showthread.php?454-What-anime-are-you-watching-now&highlight=recommendations) thread, as I believe it began as a recommendation thread and conversations in there do seem to gravitate back toward that regard. Just a thought.

I recommend Onepunch-Man and Hunter X Hunter for Manga, haven't seen the anime for Hunter X Hunter all the way through but Haar likes it afaik.
For Anime, if you like manly-ass jokes, then watch Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, it's better than most of the **** I've seen.
If none of that interests you at all, then I got nothing. Ichigo 100% was pretty alright I guess.
Crow's right, I do like the Hunter x Hunter anime. Anyway,
Manga recommendations:
2001 Nights - A fairly realistic series about mankind's venture into space.
Shamo - A dark tale of a deadly martial artist that practices karate not for sport, but survival.
Five Star Stories - A heroic fantasy in space. People have giant knight robots.
Kingdom - Historical fiction about a boy wanting to become a great general. Does right what a lot similar manga do wrong. Strategy is favored over power ups, female characters are actually important, named characters are important, et cetera.
Zetman - Imagine Batman with genetically engineered monsters.
As far as anime recommendations go, I'm just going to post this again:

Also, not a manga, but if you like western comic books, then read Y: The Last Man. All of the male organisms in the world die except a guy and his monkey and they go on an adventure to find out how to restore humanity's balance.

Manga recommendations:
And, if none of the those fit your style, here are five more excellent series that are pretty much the complete opposite of the ones mentioned by Haar.
Nickelodeon (yes, like the channel) or Voynich Hotel - Both are extremely unrealistic yet pleasantly mellow tales about bizarre encounters and people. Although they both are sort of the "love it or hate it"-type, they easily make up for their flaws through sheer creativity/weirdness. (Note: Nickelodeon is a collection of one-shots, while Voynich has an overarching storyline.)
Eyeshield 21 - Despite the fact that the premise is literally "high school kids wants to win an American Football competition through TEAMWORK, EFFORT and GUTS!", there's enough suspense, twists and turns packed in this series that you will probably finish it in the span of two weeks. Probably one of the best shonen sports manga available, if not even one of the best shonen.
Uchuu Kyoudai - There isn't a single mecha in this series. There aren't even a whole lot of spaceships, for that matter... But trust me, by the time you'll hit volume 4, you'll be already asking yourself how come an entire genre revolving around "astronaut assessment tests" does not exist yet.
Vinland Saga - (Surprisingly accurate) Historical fiction about a powerful but young viking warrior wanting to learn what does it mean to be a true man. Beautifully drawn series with excellent and complex characters. (To be honest, the only reason how it can be considered an opposite of Kingdom is because it takes place on the other side of the globe)
One punch-Man - Superman (as in "hopelessly broken hero from the get-go") done right. And recently redrawn by deity level mangaka Murata "Eyeshield 21" Yusuke, to boot! [EDIT: Crap. Didn't notice Crow already mentioned it...]

Eyeshield 21 is very good indeed.
I also have to recommend Initial D if you can get into it.

There's a Starship Troopers anime? Why have I not seen it before?
I'll throw in some recommendations too:
Manga
Apocalypse no Toride - A pretty awesome zombie manga with none of the stupid ecchi stuff that HOTD poked everyone in the eye with
I Am A Hero - Another awesome zombie manga, also without stupid ecchi
20th Century Boys - Great if you love longer stories, along with conspiracies, post-apocalyptic scenarios and well developed characters
Anime
Monster - One of the best detective/suspense animes out there. Forget Death Note, this one kept up the great pace all the way through, but it is around 70+ episodes long, so only good if don't mind the length
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin - The best shounen anime (at least for me). Manly tears abound
From the New World - aka Shinsekai Yori. The perfect blend of psychological thriller and fantasy, I won't say too much that would spoil the story. A must watch if you like mystery and a more subtle storyline (at least for the first few episodes before it all kicks off)
Gankutsuou - The art style is unique and the story is (loosely) based on the Count of Monte Cristo. Pretty good if you like dramatic animes with building action and pacing
I would go on forever listing things, but if you want to find anymore, feel free to browse my anime/manga list. I've seen and read far too many, so there should be something to enjoy

Berserk: God-tier manga written by a BASED mangaka which has amazing writing, elder-god tier art and is one of the few series that I can say is essentially a classic novel or poetic epic in Manga-format. So good even Go-Nagai is a fan of it. Also is constantly ripped off by the likes of generic shonen ****, Sword Art Online (seriously SAO rips off so much from Berserk...Kirito as "the black swordsman" for one, but there is so much more.), Final Fantasy and has even inspired its fair share of homages in the likes of Street Fighter for example. Has a poor adaptation track record as both movies and original anime series only animate the same arc of the series and both have their own problems. (Generic PS2 esq. CGI in the movies and piss poor animation in the original animation) Although the Manga is quite possibly one of the best things I have ever read.
TERRA-FORMARS: Manga (not the anime), my go to choice for entertaining schlock. Don't expect to gain much from this series, just sit back and enjoy the insanity.
Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night (new 2014 anime): I'd suggest reading the Visual Novel first, but that has its own fair share of issues making trecking through it kind of a pain, although I've seen it recommended that with the new anime you can start off with Fate/Zero and jump into "Unlimited Blade Works" although Its all depending on who you ask.
Digimon Tamers: Objectively the Best Digimon Series. And possibly the best mon-Anime out there. Chiaki Konaka certainly created a work of art with this one.

I'd first like to say that the lists aren't entirely accurate(needs some tweaking).
The ones bolded and underlined I've already read the manga so I know the story more or less. The ones that are just bolded, I can't believe I forgot them, I've already watched...
As for Welcome to the NHK? :wtf:

As for Welcome to the NHK? :wtf:
It's allot better than it may seem, acts like a goofy comedy for the first few eps then steadily gets all dark, depressing and serious. One of the few anime I bought on DVD.

So are we all going to have our own personal "recommend me stuff" threads?
Our "bordering on OCD"-hatred of new threads is no match to our collective inner desire to jerk off our favorite series in front of others...
I'm saving my mechanically triggered hatred for when all of my suggestions are ignored.

Why does this happen to me a lot? Luckily I have found a torrent so I can actually watch it, as only other thing I found was a Spanish subbed one on youtube...
