I enjoyed a lot of these. Even the ones which weren't as good were only bad because the editing/timing was a little off. Definitely far superior in quality to the last few challenges though. Not sure who to vote for atm

Nothing was terrible as other have said. There is a few decent ones. However a lot of them started with a concept synced stuff up and then go to a point where they just put filler in and hoped for the best. Which for a full length 3 to 6 minutes AMV sure, however I feel a little disappointed with the shorter running time that people ran out on their concept and decided to just keep going.

A few knew were to stop such as Badman and Black Hole sun. They did what they wanted and had nowhere to go so they stopped.

I don't really even forgive it that much when they do it in a full length AMV.

And yes, I'm fully aware I've done it myself (anyone remember that crappy Yu-Gi-Oh! AMV of mine?) Doesn't mean I'm ok with myself doing it, either.

Oh it is not a great thing filler, more understandable when you have 3 to 6 minutes of footage to source and keep interesting. I think everyone would prefer to not get bored of filler footage and stay engaged with a video.

All of these were unfunny and/or **** quality. This was one of the most open challenges yet and this is the **** you people produce? Many were too long for the joke, such as the "Dew" clip. There was a two clips with some good lip syncing, which makes it harder to guess which clip was chaz's.


People still interested in doing challenge videos/ AMV Hell clips in general, your first draft of your clip is probably not the best. You should find a buddy on the site that you trust will have constructive feedback and share your clip with them through a pm. Take their feedback and try reworking your video. This will almost always improve the overall quality of your clips.

To be honest, the AMV Zero ("All of the chinese cartoon splicing you know and love, now with even less of the humor!") is probably the hardest type of clip to pull off properly; without the actual joke to compensate, the thing that makes or breaks the clip ends up being solely the editing. Unfortunately, there's only about ten exceptionally good editors who can properly pull this off on AMV Hell, a few of which haven't really shown themselves since AMV Hell 5.

Still, the quality did go up quite a bit compared to previous episodes, seeing how most people aren't really focusing on making a joke. On the other hand, it's still not enough to make up for the lack of humor. Only #15 really stood out to me, honestly...

Feels like a repeat of the concept of love round- the general quality of the entries is good here, but the humour is still lacking.
Oh, and what a surprise - the little people are creaming themselves saying “this is the best challenge evar” and other noises.


This was one of the most open challenges yet and this is the **** you people produce? One would think there would have been more entries at the very least. Honestly, are there only 18 AMV editors in this community anymore?


01 – Tainted – Uh-oh, the video froze at 0:23, I better re… oh wait, it was just a still frame that was held waaaay too long AKA bad editing.
Just a personal complaint here- but this is the 1981 recording of the song, not the superior 1991 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcYiPIqBXOc) remix, I hate listening to the original.
Little synergy. No punchline. Weak entry.

02 – It’s a Cat girl, I guess – Song about a kitty + footage of a catgirl ≠ clever or funny.
Seems this one is getting a lot of “wut annie-may iz dat? lol derp” comments from the little people.

03 – A link to the past – I see what you did there, Zarxrax.
This is the same goddamn 03 entry from the concept of love ( http://youtu.be/p8sYITgtlF4?t=53s) challenge, it even suffers the same problem- the characters aren’t consistent with their positions on screen; in one cut- Kintaro is on the right looking left, next he’s on the left looking right. They’re flipping around all over the shop and it looks amateur. Damn it, why don’t you people learn?
At least the ending was better in this one. Not a terrible entry, just didn’t tickle me.

06 – She bangs – Not a particularly funny clip but it had some energy… until it hit the 2:18 mark anyway. Might have worked better if it ended at 2:13. Why didn’t you use the original song? Why this crappy cover? There’s ghosting and the picture has clearly been cropped and black-bordered to hide the network logo. Point (6). Mediocre entry.

07 – Black hole – Uh, Yeah. It’s a black sun alright… what? That’s it? Point (5).

08 – Real Herculean – Some of the cuts could have been timed a little better to really sync with the lyrics, but this actually had some decent synergy going for it. Was looking like a pretty good entry until two things murdered it:


Satan studios; Hercamania; by Hercule – what the hell does this even mean? And don’t patronise me- I know this is Hulk Hogan’s classic entrance song, but knowing that doesn’t make anything any clearer. Whatever the supposed joke or statement is- the font is way too boring.
The ending – You had a good thing going with the actual music video, but all the energy of the clip is ground to a halt and this is the punchline? The cut was too abrupt and we can barely even make out what Piccolo says. What does the fish have to do with anything? Maybe you were going for a “LOLWTF” reaction, but it just didn’t work. Disappointing.
09 – Do your homework – If you’re going to make an AMV similar to one of the precious few entertaining clips from AMVH7, don’t do an inferior job of it ( http://youtu.be/Mff0aUIwYEU?t=45m13s).

10 – Bitch – Point (5)

11 – What is this even? – I had to check the synopsis of the show to see what the joke was supposed to be, I had no idea the character was supposed to be reacting to a sudden gender change. Terrible execution, poor lip-syncing, should have ended at 4:29. Bad entry.

14 – Batman – Point (5) I SAW IT! I EXPECT BETTER FROM YOU.

15 – Chopper – I like its energy. The (first) “spin it like a helicopter” bit was funny. Didn’t like the punchline though, should have ended at 6:19 (Booyaka- Booyaka!) Not bad.

16 – Stuff happening – Point (2)

17 – In town – Uh-huh, so they’re all in town… that’s it? That’s the punchline? I want more, damn it. Ugly ghosting and network logo. Point (6)?

18 – Long over-Dew – Not funny, but it is nice to see some excellent video editing for a change.
My only question is- where the hell has the editor of this entry been for the last 6 months?

Leaving 4 and 12, 4 seemed to have more complicated editing ie. the rose petals flying across screen.

12 - Definitely made use of this song, and encapsulates the mood.
15 - The last part is what made me lol, otherwise it was cool.
18 - Love puns, makes me wonder if why Mountain Dew would have paid Katy Perry for this.

Since the challenge of this iteration is explicitly about AMVs, I'm not going to judge the comedy aspect of the clip unless the entry itself brings it up.

With that out of the way, let's embark on this adventure, shall we?

1. Timing is okay, though the scene selection could've been done better. Pretty lackluster throughout.

2. Works on the cute character aspect.

3. Good work and execution, though the overall impression of the joke is rather tame.

4. Works well. The touch of comedy Voltaire uses is always welcome.

5. What the lyrics say is what the anime shows. It certainly is a method of doing AMVs, but you have to be careful not to make it look disjointed. This one shows indices of that, though they are slim. Alright.

6. That video quality is certainly subpar, and with bloody black bars, to boot. The AMV itself could've used better workmanship.

7. For what it does, I think it does it in a passable manner. Not an award-winner, though.

8. The criticism for 5 is applicable in this one too, though this one manages to keep itself together better... until the end. You just had to blow it, eh?

9. It does its job well.

10. This one's better than what we've seen so far in this challenge. If not the well done editing and audiovisual job, then the puns just give it that extra push above the rest of the mediocre bunch. Granted, if the fade out at the end was intentional, then it certainly could've helped the video by not being there.

11. Easily the worst clip of the whole bunch. It's basically slapping a Chinese cartoon to a fitting piece of music and hoping that the resulting abomination somehow gets what you want to convey to the viewer. Oh, I get the intentions alright; and the concept is somewhat interesting. Nonetheless, the execution is overall very lazily done.

12. This one's pretty good, though it could've performed better in some aspects at the beginning, since the timing of the animation doesn't catch up to the beat of the song.

13. Them old-school bad boys. It's alright, I suppose.

14. I hope the whole AMV wasn't made with the purpose of tacking that corny visual joke at the end, because that would be a disrespect to the the atmosphere you built for Vegeta. Also, does Dragon Ball natively have that much aliasing? A pass with naa or maa could've helped in diminishing it.

15. Aah, we meet again 5, though this one is lip sync most of the way. It seems like a scene transition or two falter very slightly in terms of timing, but the overall dynamic tone is there. Nicely done.

16. Dynamic, and it certainly understands what it needs to show in order to correspond towards the music. Good job.

17. Not that much of an effective joke, but its impression lingers and you get to appreciate it after a few rewatches.

18. Marvelous editing, it's such a shame that it's done with the intention of annoyingly hammering in such a lukewarm pun on the viewer. I'm sure Mountain Dew in Japan would love it as a commercial. In here, we're just fine without it.

Overall, this round was solid. A lot of relatively decent videos with okay executions, but it's the hard-hitters who get the recognition at the end.

Getting the dynamic right is essential, so that leaves us with:
