1. How exactly am I not respecting the regulations with my previous post?? The only thing I can possibly think of was the fact the the audio used in 19B was from 1979, but to bring that issue up again is like beating a dead horse at this point. Otherwise, all I did was outline my decision-making progress with that post, how on earth is that "unfair"? Other people post the same **** all the time without issue.

2. I lack dignity? The only way I could've lost any dignity with that post was with my 80s-slang-talk, and if that was somehow enough to make me completely undignified in your view, than you are most likely somebody who is extremely un-funny, overy-serious, and just can't see or take anything as a goddamn joke. And if this is indeed true, then I am amazed that you even submit things to AMV Hell.

3. Considering that I only made TWO submissions this season, combined with the fact that I voted on only THREE of the episodes this season, I really have not done much at all to affect the quality of this season. One thing that HAS affected the quality are all the goddamn J*M clips that plagued this season. Why these non-anime American cartoons* were allowed into this season will be one of the world's biggest mysteries for many years to come. Of course, J*M is not the only reason this season sucked--there were submissions that were ****ty for reasons other than J*M, and there were challenges that whose entire premise would guarantee ****tyness (See Challenge 8--The Fox).

I understand your anger at how ****ty this season was (and it WAS a ****ty season, I agree), but you're clearly blaming the wrong person here. You need to direct your anger at all the J*Mfags (especially NPCC), the ****ty clips, and the ****ty challenges, as I mention in my previous point above.

Anime = animation, PERIOD. It didn't become "Japanese animation" until western otaku decided to alter the term to fit their weeaboo likeness. Don't believe me? Go over to Japan and ask for "anime". While obsessiveness is a symptom of autism, it's also symptomatic of a multitude of other psychological disorders, so trying to associate it with just one is fairly limiting. So yes, attributing it to general insanity probably would be more accurate. In addition, Einstein defined insanity as continually doing the same thing and expecting different results. If the expectation is that things can continue as they have and people will stop bitching, then yes, it fits that definition of insanity as well.

A brief moment just to say a huge thanks to Zarxrax for organising the AMV Minis Challenges.

There’s no denying that a few people soured the experience of this project by abusing the freedom handed to them, but most entrants (or at the very least- a dedicated few) made a genuine effort to work with the restrictions they were given and create something entertaining for an impossible to please audience, and that’s the important thing.

I had a lot of fun creating entries for, watching, critiquing and discussing these challenges.
I feel that my editing has vastly improved since June 2013 and I’ll be very sad not having a new challenge round to look forward to in the coming months.

Challenge 03 Misheard Lyrics remains the best example of the AMV hell community running with a concept and producing good work.
Special thanks to contributors such as Superlolisentai; Hosokawa; Jinzo; Adzman; Rob Frazer and Shuiia who lent the most support to the project with 14 entries or more each.

If we were to revisit this concept in the future- I would gladly take part again.

Part: A portion of, played a role in. However, it's all relative, and it goes in both positive AND negative ways. Making just two submissions and voting on just three episodes isn't much of an impact, especially in relative terms. Hell, one of my submissions didn't even get any votes (not even from myself). Me voting for 19B is miniscule compared to the existence of Challenge 8 and some of the ****tier submissions on the other challenges. I'm not denying the fact that I played a role in making you feel like I contributed to the ****tyness of this season. I will state (again) that going being butthurt over 19B is a past issue.

Explain to me why Zarx, the only person working on these, allowed western animation in all the other minis, despite him "totally not actually allowing that." I know he's rejected at least some clips for not fitting within the rules, so why not those clips? Even if Zarx did mean "Japanese only", that still wouldn't prove that anime = Japanese animation. It would only prove that Zarx is a weeaboo.

It's not about you voting for 19B (not with me, at least). It's about how much you're reaching just to insult someone who dared to have a differing opinion. Most obvious example is that edit of yours. You reached so far, you actually had to go to Mil's profile page just to find ammo. You even blatantly admit that, yet talk about it like it's not at all a stupid, desperate thing to do. I didn't even know mil had any relation whatsoever to being a "brony" until you brought up his profile avatar. That should say a lot about how "obsessed with a show for little girls" he is.

It also says a lot about your own insecurity when you feel the need to put down someone else who watches a show you deem "kiddy and girly" just to feel better about yourself. I personally don't even care at all about what video you vote for. I've found this entire "voting" thing throughout the series to be of questionable validity, at best. I'm not sure too many people actually voted for the best clip, but instead voted for "Which clip shat on the series the most?", or "Which clip used sources that I really like?" or "Which clip will be the most controversial if it wins?"

So, we've reached the end of the road for this iteration of AMV Minis. Now's the time to look at the past and see what the editors (and the audience) have accomplished throughout this year and a half. These entries were appointed by the people as representatives of their respective challenges due to an alleged exceptional adeptness in comparison to their peers. Some deserving of the title, others not.
Well, now they're up against each other, in a final bout, in order to stand as the clip that wins it all; the entry that stands for the values of AMV Minis and AMV Hell; the submission that possesses a level of accomplishment so great that people should envision to achieve it with their own work.

But under what guidelines should said clip be deemed worthy? What makes a clip represent overall good qualities in AMV Minis Challenge and AMV Hell in general? For the purpose of this evaluation, the following constraints are described in order to assist me (and the viewer, if so desired) in making this pseudo-important decision.

GROUND RULES

AMV Minis is not here to overall destroy itself, its elder sister project, or its community by condoning deplorable practices in general.
The following rules were implemented in my deliberations in order to preserve the honesty of my decision.

1.The entry must have been done in accordance with the general rules of AMV Minis Challenge (http://www.amvhell.com/showthread.php?27304) and the rules particular to its respective Challenge.

The format of AMV Minis Challenge was a competitive one: editors would make a submission that respected the overall theme and the specific limitations imposed by Zarxrax. Then, under those limitations, the entries would be released to the public in order for them to select the one they thought it was the best (with the exception of Challenge 21, in which people voted for the worst video). Any entry that circumvented said limitations either possessed an unfair advantage over the rest, showed values of overall dishonesty, and/or compromised the integrity of the format itself. The failure in positively identifying and rectifying these issues in due time was entirely the responsibility of the offender and Zarxrax himself, the latter being the organiser of this event. In order to salvage what little self-respect this season of Minis has left, the product of such bastardising incidents must be promptly condemned by being excluded from consideration, in the interest of justice.

Such entries include: 19A, 19B, and 32

2.The winning entry's theme must not revolve around AMV Hell, Minis, or anything derived from them, this includes community jokes and inside references.

AMV Hell did not gain its popularity by being self-referential, but by being aware of popular culture and utilising its audiovisual format to instill a sense of either comedy or astoundment in the general anime community. By extension, it's natural to infer that an AMV Minis video that's exclusively self-gratifying will rightfully not be to the liking of many. The purpose of a community video, like an AMV, is to embrace the viewer with its creativity, not alienate him.

The following entries breach this rule and shall not be considered for further evaluation: 1, 9, 19A*, 24, 32*

3.The entry must have been done with the intention of being a good entry.

The intention of this rule is to eliminate any ineligible candidates for the best video due to temporary modifications in the judgement method.
During the whole run of AMV Minis Challenge, the only time where such changes occurred was during the aforementioned Challenge 21, in which the public was instructed to vote for the worst video out of the lineup. By the nature of this judgement, we can deduce that the winner of Challenge 21 is not to be deemed worthy of consideration.

4. The entry must contain anime or anime-esque footage.

Things such as live action footage and pure western animation, while they do have their designated place in AMV Hell and Minis, are not in the general interest of the target community, myself included. You can get as liberal and purist as you want with the definition of anime or AMV and what should it mean to people, but it doesn't change the fact that our real intentions stay as pure as ever: we're here to look at Asian cartoons set to a different audio. Let's not bull**** ourselves, gentlemen.

With that out of the way, here's where the actual fun starts.

2. This one's pretty good, though I'm not sure about the correlation of what the lyrics are saying and what the video is showing (she's doing pretty good, in my opinion).

3. Oh yeah, this is what it's all about: comedy and overall awesomeness. A very nice candidate.

4. This one's a Solid one too, albeit more aggressive and, by extension, rowdy.

5. On the other side of the spectrum: an overall very well done clip that uses a girls' song. Mighty impressive.

6. Good pacing, good focus on comedy, good all around. It won its round for a reason.

7. Now, this one lags a tad on the first scene, but it makes up for it nicely afterwards. Good comedic clip.

8. Hmm... the joke's pretty effective, but the video's a tad disjointed. It sadly also served (in hindsight) as a prelude for murkier things in AMV Minis's future.

10. Very good production values makes it a good AMV. That's the problem, though: no comedy and nothing that much visually appealing either.

11. Ugh, this is where it starts to go wrong: lagging too much in scenes, no attempts at lipsync. This shouldn't be here.

12. Christmasy, and the joke works. It doesn't have as much steam as previous entries, though.

13. Simple and effective. Brevity is a double-edged sword, though, since you're likely to not have as much effective content as a decent sized clip would.

14. The audio makes the clip more than the visuals, which are looped. It's good enough, alright, but not the best by any stretch of the imagination.

15. A little pick-me-up in terms of quality and overall effectiveness. Well done.

16. Ze Vines. 13 certainly applies, but this one's a step more effective.

17. It has some issues in overall dynamIcs, but it's a decent effort.

18. This spells inexperienced all around. Can't even put the censor until the lips stop flapping. It started good enough, then it got way over its head.

20. Not enough going on to merit its length.

22. It's blatant, despicable pandering. Take that away from the video and you're left with garbage.

23. I just noticed the embossed messages. The video's okay, but not that outstanding in comparison.

25. Good production values, but an underwhelming, puerile eXecution. Reminds me of the time I called you "visually pretentious".

26. Those were the good days, alright, and that's about it. I'm not here to reminisce, I'm here to pick a good, funny/awesome video.

28. You stitched yourself a good comedy clip, with stitched being the key word here. The seams are pretty evident.

29. This one's got the pep a lot of the late entries just didn't have. Nice candidate.

30. It works pretty well. It also has a few minor bumps here and there too, though.

31. An accurate representative of the year 2014: it could've been way better.


A first screening gives the following results:

2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 15, 29, and 30

Afterwards, the list is filtered down to:

3, 5, 6, 7, and 29

Now, this is when it really hurt to take away clips from consideration.

After fighting remorse, the finalists were:

Of all these AMVs, the one I enjoy re-watching the most is Haar’s “What does the Squid Say” clip.
It’s an unfunny song being mixed with unfunny video to a humorous (and raunchy) effect… now that’s AMV Hell done correctly.

The results of this poll should be the most interesting of all, and at the time of typing we have a slightly, above-average turnout of 143 votes.
If democracy has any value on this site whatsoever- videos 9, 11, 19A, 21, 22, 27 and 32 will not receive any more than 7% of the total vote.
Frankly Zarx, I’m surprised you even added 21 to the poll at all… but I suppose it’ll tell us exactly how trustworthy the opinions of the people around here can be.

Now that I finally got to sit down and watch this through, I can narrow down selections. So far, the clips that moved on were either clips that almost got my vote, or did (based from a crappy memory lol)

Do me a favor and tell me where I said "**** everyone who says otherwise" in that post. Except you can't, because I NEVER SAID THAT. I did say "anybody who [disagrees] can go eat my shorts", but that if you look at my "reasons" prior to that line, you'll see that I'm just trying to be funny by using outdated 80s-era slang. Perhaps I should've posted my REAL reasons for picking 19B alongside my 80s joke reasons, but at the time I didn't think I would be igniting a complete ****storm from people who take things way too seriously and simply lack the ability to see the funnier side of life. I'll admit, I was naïve.

In other words, I didn't mean the "eat my shorts" line to be taken seriously. I probably should've left out that line entirely. I'll admit it: I ****ed up there. The only reason I went on and attacked MM18 was because of A) how ballistic he went over my initial post, B) Me not initially understanding why he went ballistic, and C) the fact that I hadn't realized that the "eat my shorts" line was being taken in ways that I had never intended on occurring.


That's the difference between me and Terra. I learn from my past mistakes, and correct my erroneous viewpoints when proven wrong (which I wasn't proven wrong on that until later).

I forgot about that one, and found myself questioning how that clip won it's respective challenge and thusly made it into the final video.

Hilariously, this was also the only clip I wondered that exact thing. Now I fully understand how it happened.....

We did have a pretty good distribution of the votes. The winning entry only had just over 10% of the vote.

So, now that it's all said and done, what have we learned from the experience?

I think the main thing we learned was that the bar for entry was almost non-existent for the most part, which I imagine a lot of people would like to see changed if another challenge series starts up again.

The problem with setting a bar for quality is if it's set to high it will deter new and less experienced editors from trying to get there entries in.
But on the other hand if the bar is set to level were anything get's in then people might not be willing to try as hard.

I agree with Jinzo's point about setting the bar too high. Right now, though, the "bar" is virtually nonexistent.

We didn’t “learn” this, we knew it from the beginning:

Everybody gets one entry per challenge. No judging. Absolute freedom.

I praise Zarxrax for sticking with the formula all the way to the end; it’s just a shame that some people abused this freedom and or submitted shoddy work.
If we learned anything through this experience- it’s that free admission is rarely a good idea.
Sometimes- you just have to turn away guests at the door.

Anyway- I do agree that should a new challenge season ever start, a little more vetting by the judge(s) would be very welcome.

AMV Hell should be something one feels proud to be a contributor to, and if new and less experienced editors aren’t willing to improve their craft and make good, funny AMVs- then let them be deterred. This isn’t a dumping ground for baby’s first AMV.


Raise the bar, Zarx. Raise it high.
The “bar” will be raised by accepting only worthy AMVs through effective judging in future projects. That’s a no-brainer.
I’ve said this before ( http://www.amvhell.com/showthread.php?28874-AMV-Hell-7-Out-Now!!&p=543645#post543645), but I’ll say it again- we’ll need more judges besides Zarxrax alone to accomplish this.
