By a damn, nasty virus. So there I was, innocently watching a flash on NewGrounds, when all of a sudden . . BAM! Virus time. It disabled task manager, my anti-virus software, you name it. It disguised itself as an anti-virus program and the only website I was allowed to go to was one where I could buy software to "make my computer safe". It didn't fool me though, and after 3 hours of fighting with this thing, I managed to defeat it by somehow pulling off a system restore. The thing is, originally it made it appear that I didn't have any restore points, but eventually I got something to pop up saying I had one from yesterday when my computer installed an update, so long story short I have everything back . . or so it appears. I'm running a full scan now that my anti-virus is no longer disabled, but I have this feeling somewhere on my computer this thing is hiding . . waiting for me to lower my guard. Has anyone else experienced a virus like this where it just disables everything that might even give you the slightest chance of getting rid of it?

Good work giving it a fight, I would have been useless myself and probably just lunged for the power cable or something. Then called up my more technological friends :P

Most of modern viruses tries to disable antivirus. Thats why Im using Kaspersky - it has powerful self defense. Also Im using Malwarebytes anti malware software simultaneously. Kaspersky and Malwarebytes antiviruses works in completely different ways what makes a virus 2x harder to disable them both. Also I have Security task manager to see hidden processes (which Windows task manager do not show). Viruses often mimics such hidden process. If you find it, you can often locate where virus and delete it. Or at least prevent it from loading by using Run -> msconfig -> startup. Also Unlocker Assistant is useful to forbid a virus from using other programs on your PC (for example often if you try to delete virus file, Windows says "cannot delete files - file is in use", because such file is in bond with some system process (usually Explorer.exe) Unlocker Assistant breaks this bond and isolates virus.
And if you or your Antivirus havent found and deleted that virus - he is surely still on your PC.

Well, i own a mac but my expierience with Windows in the past my brother once got a virus on his computer that installed heaps of rogue antivirus, disabled his antivirus, hacked all his accounts that had saved passwords, delted most of his files and a whole bunch of other stuff not worth mentioning.

you know macs are used enough now that people have started making viruses for them. they're a bitch to clear out too

i have had that happen and worse.... it spread through my network the only computer that survived was the windows vista computer(ironic isnt it?) the rest were xp. i went through hell to get rid of it. i used nortan anti virus, hijackthis, taskmanager, and the clean computer in a network scan(driect connect with crossover cable). took me 2 sleepless nights to get rid of it. had waaaay too much data to do a reformat

I'm pretty sure system restore took care of it. I'm not experiencing anymore problems and my last full scan showed nothing. I lost a few programs I had downloaded that day, but I bet the virus also got deleted too along with those.

That virus is not deleted. System restore have just isolated it from the system. If you would undo that system restoration, virus would be here again.
And that fact that virus disabled your antivirus, show that it cannot detect this virus.

I got a nasty one that mimics windows security. It prevented me from installing stuff all the time and from time to time would hyjack my browser.

This happened to me once, I had the same problem.
The way I fixed it was to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, re-name the .exe file that it installed to jibberish, then run a virus scan with it.
I may have ran windows in "safe mode," but I don't remember. @_@

Well I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a full scan, and no virus. I think the restore deleted the virus along with a few other things I downloaded that day because they're gone as well.

I dont trust Malwarebytes, and there are better programs out there. AVG just updated their free scanner and its looking pretty robust

Yeah . . I gave in this morning and downloaded it. It's pretty nice. I had to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials to download it though, but since MSE failed to keep my computer safe, I think it deserved to be terminated. >:3

True - you need to turn system restore OFF to delete any/all restore points and their data.
Once that's done, turn it back on and set a restore point.

I used to use AVG, but once they made their free antivirus software so hard to find I gave up and bought NOD32. Kept me safe for a while, but when my license ran out I just went with Avast.
Hearing "virus database has been updated" every day does get annoying. D:
I hold onto SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, plus a few other virus scanning programs, in case the **** really hits the fan.

What I hate with the free ones is I can't get them to TELL me when there is an update and let ME decide to put it in. They just DO IT and my netbook slows to a crawl. Avast used to, but last one I tried would not.

If you are tired of virus you can install linux ubuntu (http://tips-linux.net/en/linux-ubuntu/linux-distribution/install-ubuntu) and install general software like office, nero, adobe reader and so on

how to remove most malware today
most anti virus software wont completely remove malware they tend to reinstall themselves
I do this for a living
do exactly as I tell you it may seem daunting but if you do this as i tell you to it will get rid of it and it wont come back
if you have xp pro or home start in directory services restore mode by hitting f8 when you boot up
if not then go into safe mode
go to your c: drive then go to the menu at the top go to tools-folder options-view tab and show hidden files and folders
then in your c drive go to documents and settings or users depending on wich version of windows u have
then go to users and go to whatever your main account name is go to local settings then application data then look for the folder with a bunch of random letters and numbers. go in it and right click on the virus file which should also be a bunch of randomness go to rename then hit cntrl c to copy the name. leave this window open dont delete it yet
go to the start menu and go to run or the search bar if vista or 7 and type in regedit this will open registry editor go to the menu bar at the top and go to edit and find in the search box for the find command hit cntrl v to paste the name of the virus file then hit find delete any registry keys it finds it will highlight them then hit find again and repeat till it says finished searching hte registry
now you can delete the folder with the virus in it
after this you need to take off the proxy it installs to redownload itself go to firefox go to tools-options-advanced tab-network tab-settings button and click the little button for no proxy
next open internet explorer and go to tools internet options -connections- lan settings and uncheck the proxy and check the automaticly find settings box
restart computer and you are done.

3 programs. SpyBot: search and destroy, I've never seen an anti spyware better and its free, AVAST for your antivirus the only other virus program that comes close is AVG, but that has problems with Firefox, and the MOST important one Ccleaner, It finds EVERYTHING thats not supposed to be there and gets rid of it.

dont hate bots,hate the creators!
ive had some expierience with manual virus deleting, bigest problem is that YOU MUST KNOW all the names of programs that you need/use or system type, some of them DO have random **** up names,i dont remember which program but i deleted part file of it and it ****ed up my internet explorer.

Ima throw my bull**** out here XP, System restore tends to break more things than the actual virus and evileel is correct its just contained. The aim of a virus is usually to disable the OS in any way shape or form and they do not jump hdd's or damage personal files by themselves its usually the user that gives it the aid. I no longer use an antivirus, instead I just keep hdd images around from the last time the OS was clean. Main reason I do that is to save time, I can write an image to the hdd faster than it takes an antivirus to scan.
