I feel like nearly every big anime from the 90s (Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Battle Angel, Ghost in the Shell, etc.) has been in live action preproduction at one point or another, but what do we have to show for it so far? Anything other than the Dragonball movie?

Making anime into live action isn't bad, but only if they do it right and choose the right shows. Dragonball was a horrible choice, how can you make real people in orange costumes and funky hair look cool in reality? But something with a more realistic anime could work. They should also try doing live actioning movies, not shows. Even making an anime movie from an anime show can suck.

I think movies and shows that made great animes, do not need to be made into live action movies like Akira and GitS. But manga that wasnt as popular as an anime, like Battle Angle Alita should be made into a movie. That is why I am really hoping James Cameron makes the Battle Angel movie a lot more that I care about an Akira movie.
