I'm curious about certain anime, but I don't know which version of an anime to watch dubbed or subbed?

I know some dubs are awesome (Cowboy Beebop, Wolf's Rain, Baccano!) and other's are...uggh (Anything by 4kids), same with subs. Some this a thread where anyone can ask about whether an anime is better in english, japanese or some other language. and get a response.

So i'll start off: I'm wanting to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena, is it better subbed or dubbed? I'm pretty sure it's subbed but I want to make sure.

No idea on that one.
Code Geass is great with the dub they do.
FLCL: Dub
Super Milk Chan: [adult swim] dub only

Gurren Lagann: Sub
Soul Eater: Sub
Clannad: Sub
Shuffle: Sub
Negima: Sub
K-on: Sub

If the name Brittany Kabrowski appears anywhere in the voice actors list for the English version. Go with the sub.

Not just the voices, the words. When I watched the subbed versions of HG it was just wrong when they got "Oh damned soul wallowing in your sin. Perhaps ... it is time to die." (and "Your grievance shall be avenged.") wrong. Wrong in my mind.

I know for sure that Excel Saga and FLCL have very good dubs. In fact, the original director oversaw the dubbing on FLCL so they did pretty well.

and i bought the DUb for 1 main reason.. that my Favorite Voice actress Plays My FAvorite Character.. .so it was must own Dub for me XD.

but in general... if i seen the show in Japanese via fansubs.. and i enjoy it... i make sur ei buy it when it comes out so as to support the anime community the best i can.....

One good thing about dubbed Hell Girl was I got my wife to try watching one. She'd never have made it through subtitled.

Subbed, for the most part. At least if I hear an incredibly annoying line in Japanese, it probably won't stay in my head for a week. Not to mention how over-the-top some voice actors sound. Of course, that's an issue in both English and Japanese. Now, It's not like I hate dubs. In fact I can watch any sort of horrible, horrible dub and still tolerate the show. Generally prefer dubs (don't have to re-wind to watch the action after reading the subs) but don't have much of a problem with subs themselves (simulcast or only way to get it; we like to watch foreign live action stuff too). Any anime with the following VAs should be watched dubbed IMHO:

Yeah, I'll watch in dubs if it has them and it's the first time I've seen it... sometimes. I don't have a system... mostly it's subs. actually, the only stuff I watch in dubs are the stuff I own on dvd, lucky star, blue gender, cowboy bebop, etc. mostly stuff that either played on cartoon network or that I rented from netflix. Netflix mostly carried eng dub dvds, so that's what I listened to. anything I watch online though I listen to subs. actually, when gurren lagann was released, netflix didn't have it in eng dub at first, so I watched subbed DVDs, and I can't listen to it in eng dub. likewise after listening to angel beats in sub, I just can't stand the eng dub.

Whether it's regular anime or hentai, i prefer dubs. With the former, i primarily like romantic comedy and comedy is better to hear than read. In regards to the latter, same reason, dubs in hentai are automatically great comedies.

Despite this i'm more than comfortable reading subs and think anyone who claims that it's distracting are full of it.

It's basically a mix of both for me. I usually get put off by subs because I want to watch something rather than spend most of the time reading what's on the bottom of the screen. As for dubbing, it's hit and miss for me. A great dub is a great dub (Best dubbing I've seen (So far) was from Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, and Highschool of the Dead), but if it's a bad dub, it better be entertainingly bad or else I'm gonna end up ripping my ears off.

I'm in the process of watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes and despite it being a show where the characters deliver a billion paragraphs of expository information an episode, I'm keeping up with it pretty well. Of course, I do have to pause every once in a while if they're explaining a battle strategy or a political movement.

I was "forced" to watch subbed anime for the first time because I was interested
in Bakemonogatari. After a few false starts, I got through it. My next venture was
into Nyan Koi! - a title that I had previously passed on because there wasn't a
dubbed version available. I absolutely loved NK!.
Currently I have started to study Japanese, and I have gone back to watch most of
my library in sub. (I recognize bits of 'nani', 'arigotou', and so on....)

Some of my observations:
Death Note: Ryuk is even cooler. Light is 1000% creepier!
Excel Saga: I love hearing Japanese girls speak Japanese.
Angelic Layer: See above
Love Hina: See above
FMA (03): Hmmm! Toss-up. As noted earlier, Vic Mignogna
is really good. (p.s. I would add Monica Rial to your list)

You could always watch them in English first, then do it in Japanese.

To lay it out as long as it's watchable i don't mind really, My main ,so to speak, would be subs in general but of course i can't knock the dubs. Things like FLCL, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Bastard!! keep me on a level playing field. Reading the subs and watching the show was never an issue. Just like some of you other guys, i read at a high level since my youth and my love of new words in general hooked me on subs. I've watched FLCL both subbed and dubbed but in my opinion it seems the dubbed version had a good amount more energy. The subbed version just seemed a few levels more "flat".

About 2 years ago, or so. I was 'forced', if you will, into watching a subbed anime.
[i]NyanKoi! was not available in English, but the synopsis sounded interesting.
I loved it. Soon after, I watched Bakemongatari. and more titles followed.
Today, I have CR and as indicated elsewhere, I watch subs almost exclusively now.

To date, the titles that I have watched so far fall into either of 2 categories:

I watched first in English, then in Japanese.
I watched first in Japanese.

I do prefer the original audio, however this point was driven home a few days ago
when I learned that NyanKoi! has been English dubbed.
Now I have a third category:
I watched first in Japanese, then English.

Among the English VA's are some veteran favorites: David Mantranga, Monica Rial, Andrew Love, Greg Ayres
Cara Greenberg. Nice to hear these guys (and gals), but it still sounded like a fan-dub to me...
and having watched stuff like this, didn't help.
