Amv Hell 4 is not random! Its just a tad more exclusive than 3. Browsing the forums I get the impression that a lot of people didn't understand many of the jokes for some videos. So lets help out by putting them into context with some links to the appropriate YouTube videos and such. Also, post the clips that you don't understand but may think there's a inside story involved.

I'll start with some I know:

I'm really glad you posted this, I had no idea about the "Mmm what you say" thing, I don't watch OC. Thanks!
If someone could post the "Lost" intro that'd be super too, I had no idea what was going on in that segment either, until someone said it was a parody of Lost.

The clip featuring Shippo fighting another... little creature (so sue me, I haven't watched InuYasha much) is a reference to the Mudah/WRYYYYYYYYYYY Flash animation, which is itself referencing the anime/manga/video game JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I can't explain too much beyond that, because I'm not familiar with JoJo's either, but I know that's where it comes from.

George Bush senior even tried to use the phrase as a sound bite. People who were worried got very pissy about that...

What's the one where all the students are running around with a sort of military radio conversation? "Owned!" I assume it's from some game...

About LOST, this one has the music I think was used in the Nadia clip...

I haven't seen the show myself, but I know it's about a lot of people shipwrecked on an island together where horrible and mysterious things happen, and it was made in the wake of the success of 'Survivor.' Sort of an occult Gilligan's Island.

The videogame Ilpalazzo is playing is Super Smash Bros Melee, a fighting game starring characters from many different Nintendo games (including Pikachu, BTW). The objective is not to deplete the opponent's health, but to knock them out of the battlefield, which is often done by throwing them so hard skyward they "blast off" and turn into a twinkle in the sky like Team Rocket.

^ wrong video listed there. The video you are referring to is the one that uses the R Kelly song, not Bodies by Drowning Pool. And R Kelly has been accused of sexual relations with minors, I think, which makes the song a good match for that guy.

There were a couple good ones, I like that Naruto one with Kwan, The Death Note - DoTA, Utena - Supermodel, Ichigo Mashimaro - Ridin' Dirty, Higurashi - What is Love, and Today in Class 5-2 - Skeeted on

Heheh, it's funny watching some of these videos(I no longer hate "hide and seek")

The "My name is" one with Death Note is because Light(the brown-haired dude) is trying find L's(Blacked haired dude) real name so he can write his name in the death note. I think some of these are common-sense more than 'inside-jokes'--although I did find that a lot of AMV Hell' 4's videos had some sort of connection to the anime itself, or was related to some sort of Internet phenomenon (or whatever), whereas AMV Hell 3 were either just quite obvious or whacky. (E.g. 'I Am Watching You Pee', 'I Love to Drive a Taxi'.)

The only one that I thought required any explanation from AMV Hell 3 was the Banana Phone clip, the flash-video for which I'd fortunately seen on NewGrounds a year or so before (at least, I assume that's where the connection came from).

Not that I didn't enjoy either of them. :P I find AMV Hell 4 much more fun to watch now that I've 'read up' on some of this stuff. ;D

That's the main reason, I think, why so many ppl don't like hell 4. Most of the jokes are only understandable and funny when you know the thing which is referred to.

Eg. the whole "letter to my sister" thing is only funny when you know the original snl thing. Other clips work without prior knowledge, eg. the Osaka Cowbell Hero clip (my favourite) or the "Flash" clip (perfect - I knew what was coming my wayas i heard the first few notes :D).

Some are so small I only realized them on the 10th view. Did anyone else notice, that the last "spear" pinning EVA 02 down in one clip looks a lot like a manta ray or is that just my imagination ?

Inkwolf
10-16-2007, 01:14 PM
Yeah, the manta ray was kinda the point of that one. :D Death of Steve 'Crikey!' Irwin, you know?

Heh, I knew the Flash Gordon music would be a giveaway...but only to people who knew it. And I didn't know how many people would have heard it, since I only barely discovered it myself by accident.

I agree some weren't funny unless you knew the source. The first time I watched, I was annoyed to heck with the SNL/O.C. thing because it seemed totally randomw, and even though it was used as a running gag, it just baffled me. Now that I know the source, I find them pretty funny.

Nadia was very cool. though, even before I knew wjat it was a parody of.

Banana phone was based on something besides a silly song? I thought that was just a brilliant piece of cuteness and wit on its own...must seek out the original...

After the Death Note explanations, I'm finally beginning to get the point of some of those. 'Unwritten' still seems a little unexplained, though, unless the (admitted) sheer coolness of the clip helped get it in. Is there more there than the wanting words to come / Light wanting the other guy's name to write down and kill him?

Adrian DX

Not sure anyone ever answered this, but its from the game 'Counter Strike' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter_strike) (aka 'CS'). Anime was 'School Rumble'

Related to 'BOOM HEADSHOT!!!' (http://amvhell.com/index.php/topic,712.msg3505.html#msg3505). Its the game 'FPS Doug' is playing.

Counter-Strike is the second most widely played online first-person shooter in the world, behind Halo 3. (Heh, 'Halo 3')

Actually I'd expect most of the audience to know this one. Maybe that?s why it hasn't been mentioned? :/ Of course, if you've never seen the game you wouldn't know where it was from. So now it's been mentioned. ^_^;

Counter-Strike is the second most widely played online first-person shooter in the world, behind Halo 3. (Heh, 'Halo 3')

Actually I'd expect most of the audience to know this one. Maybe that?s why it hasn't been mentioned? :/ Of course, if you've never seen the game you wouldn't know where it was from. So now it's been mentioned. ^_^;

Next time I watch AMV Hell 4 I'll try to pick out any obscure ones that haven't been mentioned at that point in time.

Some of us avoid FPS games like the plague. :P

The new AMV HELL logo (on this site, and the eye-catchers for the commercial break in AH4), and the phrase "the work that becomes a new genre itself will be called...", is from the opening credits of Cowboy Bebop.

I just got that last night, before that I thought Zarxax was just being pretentious. ;)

Yes, the graphic design is based directly on one of the cowboy bebop eyecatches. I forget which episode it was from though, they had a different one on practically every episode.

Banana phone was based on something besides a silly song? I thought that was just a brilliant piece of cuteness and wit on its own...must seek out the original...

I could be wrong entirely. ^^; It just seemed to parody the flow of the Flash. 'Hm, cool.' > '...' > 'D:' > ';_;' > '*Dead.*' > 'Ohnoes, now I suffer!'

http://youtube.com/watch?v=HJCQVGJY0Fk&mode=related&search= <-- Originally from Newgrounds.

However, according to http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_phone , there was originally an Osaka-based flash, so perhaps the two were put together? ??? *Shrug.*

My theory seems less credible now, either way. :P

That's not the Banana Phone flash at all. This is it:

The fact that there is reference list for inside jokes in AMV Hell 4 points out one fatal flaw that was not present in 3(or 1 and 2).
For example, I watched 3 with my dad who doesn't really know **** about anime, or popular culture in America for that matter, but he still managed to enjoy it. Why? You didn't need any additional knowledge to enjoy jokes, there was just clip and music/sound that fitted and it was awesome.
On 4 there was... Lots of stuff you couldn't get if you didn't have additional knowledge of the show or music clip used. For example "Mmm what you say" was pretty out there for most non-americans.

I don't get what I'll achieve by this, but I still felt like saying it.

Zarxrax
10-21-2007, 02:56 AM
I don't really know that 4 went any more in this direction than 3 did... A lot of the stuff listed in this thread really isn't necessary in order to find humor in the clips, though there are a few that would leave people lost if they didn't know what was happening. 3 had a number of those too though...

Oh, another..I think. Not sure if it counts.

'Light's evil laughing is actually that of King of Fighters veteran Iori Yagami..which I think may be a play on the fact that Light's name is 'Light Yagami'.

Of course, that could be entirely unintentional.

The Death Note clips are way better in terms of production value if you've seen the anime, which if you haven't, you should, you really really should. It's a must-see, like Cowboy Bebop. If you've seen it and didn't like it, you weren't paying attention and didn't follow the plot correctly or were watching the English dub.

Alot of people feel that dubbing takes away from the inherent qualities of the anime as it origionally was. Personally, I'm not that strict. If the voice sounds right, then a dub can be just as good as the japanese version (in some cases, it can even be better, like with Haruko in FLCL). Other times, especially, I find, with live action movies, the dubbing can screw with your head; then you're just better off reading subtitles. Again, it's all a matter of preference.

I know that, actually...
I'm envisioning a device that turns regular English conversation into Japanese and displays mostly accurate subs at the bottom of your eyesight...question is, would they buy it or try to pirate it using at-home materials? XD

And agreed on the live action dubs thing...

Hi there.
Some months ago i posted a request for a Lordi song in AMV Hell 4. (some of you may remember this). Just here to say thanks for putting one in, and proving that people on the web actually listen to requests and such like.

The complete first season of the Death Note English dub is available for direct download of a couple pay sites, the links of which you can find on the Death Note US official website. The first two episodes has appeared the last two Saturdays on Adult Swim at 12:00p 11:00c.
I watched them as they aired and thought the main character's voice sounded... strange. Its hard to explain. I'm probably just baised, new fans of the series might still be able to enjoy it.

Like someone once said to me: ''Is there possibly any valid excuse for not watching the entire series of Elfen lied?''
So i'm going to say the same... Just about Death Note... Unless you haven't watched Elfen Lied... Then .... What the (amv) hell are you thinking?????????

I'd like to point out, for all the people complaining about inside jokes, that pretty much all of the jokes in the AMV Hell series are "inside jokes." By this, I mean that you have to have some sort of experience with what the clip is referencing (unless the clip helps out).

For example, from AMV Hell 3, would you find the Carmen Sandiego/Hellsing clip funny if you had never heard of Carmen Sandiego?

With my Strawberry Eggs clip in Hell 3, I somewhat tried to make the clip accessible to people who didn't know anything about the show. I'm not sure how well that works, but people have told me they found the clip funny.

Seriously, if one had no idea who Carmen Sandiego was, that clip would not make any sense. I'm sure there is at least one person out there (in developed countries) that has never heard of her. Whether they're also the type to watch AMV Hell, though, I doubt. I was just trying to make a point with that example.

Okay, I'm going to assume you're serious (at the extreme risk of my street cred.)

"Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" was an extremely popular educational geography-based computer game. Carmen Sandiego was a master thief, and the player had to try to catch her by solving clues about what country she was going to next.

The game was so popular that it spawned a series of sequels, and even a TV game show (where the song came from.)

The inside joke is: Carmen Sandiego (the character) was always pictured as a mysterious figure wearing a red trenchcoat and wide-brimmed hat...remarkably like Alucard's wardrobe.

It's more of an age issue than a "not watching regular TV" issue -- I don't know how old you are, but at 26, I can remember playing the Carmen Sandiego computer games in the late 1980s and watching the game show and the animated series in the early/mid 1990s. But I'm the same way now -- I don't watch any regular TV, so I missed the The OC connections. So I'm grateful to everyone who's explained those clips as well as all the other in-jokes in this thread.

I have a question about clip #106: I know the song is from an American idol winner (or maybe just contestant?) and was used in the movie DreamGirls. But since I haven't played FFX/X-2, I was wondering if there was any additional significance to the clip?

These are relatively obvious, but since they haven't been mentioned in the thread:

Clip #203 - Jem Opening Theme: (another series out of the 1980s that I'm semi-embarrased to remember)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=20BZID081Vk

Clip #71 - Do the Mario: (ending credits from the Super Mario Brothers Super Show)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=65uNCLBTje0

Clip #234 - Attack its weak point for massive damage:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2g1fr5vk72M
(after watching AMV Hell 4, I couldn't help but laugh when I later rewatched that Mahoromatic episode)

Besides the whole "Jem" theme, I think it's also a nod to a YTMND fad in which "gayish" moments are accompanied by the Jem theme song and the caption "Outragous" (and if there's one anime that obviously has gay undertones, it's Berserk ;D ).

Has anyone ever thought about making a wiki about all of these things? There's just so much that these videos say about anime and pop culture that it seems like there should have a definitive resource as to where these references came from and what they are/were.

You mean "Make Love! ...The Bruce Campbell Way" Not yet, my roommate is reading it, and I hear him snorting while on the toilet (starting to think I should put a bookshelf in the bathroom) so it must be good.

First off, just wanna say thanks for making the list, had a few things in there I'd been wondering about, the O.C. parody in particular. Secondly, just for the sake of being thorough, thought I'd mention to anyone who wouldn't know that the One Piece "Jackass" clip is based on a TV show where guys do very harmful or inappropriate things to themselves and one another. It'd shock me if the last sentence actually enlightened anyone, but I felt it my duty to say something. :P

When Slowpoke interrupts Pikachu after he's hung himself, on him is written "C-c-c-combo breaker!" This is a term used in forums when the same answer is given to a question or comment over and over again to break it; it originated from Killer Instinct.

As someone else said her furry neck thing on her coat looks like the furry neck thing squall wears in ff8. And it looks like a Lion's mane. At least, thats what I tell myself.

Think there was a thread explaining this....but anyway, it's a spoof of the SNL skit "Dear Sister" which is a spoof of a scene in the finale of "The OC".

...and I can't find "Dear Sister" amongst all the parodies on youtube, sorry.....

I guess I should say something since I made that video. The opening line of the song is said by Squall from Final Fantasy 8. Misa is wearing an outfit that looks exactly like Squall's outfit in FF8. In that scene and in most of her other scenes in the anime, she is lying to various people to trick them into doing something. So it sort of works on 2 levels, but if you haven't seen Death Note and don't know the song, it makes absolutely no sense. A lot of people consider FF8 the worst modern FF game. I never played it, so I have no opinion. I like the opening of the song though.

Hey, someone just brought up a clip on the Wat's that song/anime thread that I've always wondered about...

That clip with Sensitive Pornograph to the song about Passionate Kisses...

What's the joke? Is it that they're guys? Is it that you can't tll whether they're guys or girls? Is there some pop culture connection I don't know about?

I don't get it. Please enlighten me.

That's pretty much what I thought. It was perhaps even more hilarious because it represented a strong contrast: the feeling of that scene ACTUALLY MATCHED the song, unlike everything else in 0 and /0 which tends to come at you from behind.

Pun very intended.

Edit: I also instantly thought that they both looked like Kaworu from NGE
