I've been down that road and can tell you with almost 100% certainty that there's no such thing as a good free video editor. Now Im probably gonna get a lot of **** for that statement, but when I first started out, I spent like two months looking for one and never came close. What I would suggest is this:

I plead the fifth, on the grounds that it would incriminate myself. But seriously, follow the video and get Vegas, which is good and easy to use. If you have patience you could give Adobe products a try, but without some sort of formal training, they're really hard to use. I know a couple of people who use Pinnacle, but that isn't much better than Windows Movie Maker. I could list a few more, but you would be wasting your time with those, just go with Sony Vegas and you'll have fun. AND if you don't want to go with the video link posted above, you could always buy the program, which is stupid expensive -_-*
