What program do you all recommend for making amvs? I remember it being mentioned in one of the helpful guideline topics but I can't seem to find it or remember what it was. I've been mulling over some ideas for amvs but I'll never get around to making them if I don't have some good software to work with.

Windows movie maker always worked fine for me. Maybe I'm not ambitious, but it offered every feature I've ever asked it to.

Why don't people just Google "Best video editing software"?
Sony Vegus, Cyerlink PowerDirector, and the Adobe video editor are prolly the top three.
I personally recently upgraded from AVS video editor to the latest Powerlink CyberDirector...best upgrade I have ever done. It is not as Beefy as Sony Vegus but it has yet to freeze or even slow down when editing. Good for everything Vegus can do only simpler and a lot less transitions...about the same amount of effects tho.

Im using Magix pro 16 for tasks which Sony Vegas performs poorly (like mp4 editing in some cases. Although I dont recommend it for people who are new to video editing.

Those are the most advertised ones. But this does not mean they will be the most suitable for creating AMVs.

I used to use Cyberlink PowerDirector but I switched to vegas because it had more features I needed, like masking.

So does Cyberlink Power Director. Its called Chroma Key. I tired using it out not too long ago, pretty cool effect.
It also has Masking. It is just a little more difficult then Sony Vegas. Really The top three are personal choice, they are relatively the exact same thing just with varying degrees of difficulty to use.

Yeah, it's also called Chroma Keyer, and can be useful in some situations. But 95% of the time your gonna want to mask, which Vegas is good for. I've never used Cyberlink Power Director, so I'm not sure if it has any masking ability.
But anyways, I do recommend Vegas cause it's a pretty easy program to get used to. WMM is horrid when it comes to editing. Don't use it, save yourself some time and get Vegas, or After Effects, or Premier or anything other than WMM.

No, Cyberlink has no ability to mask. Which is why I use Vegas.

I've always clung to Adobe Premiere like a small child grasping their mother's hand in a supermarket as it was the first editor I ever used (and I'm still chilling out here in the dark ages using version 6. Gasp!) but I've decided I'm a big girl now and I don't need to be dragged around looking at cabbages when I could be flicking through comic books and eying up candy. Therefore after all the good things I've heard I'm gonna give Vegas a try ^^

Premier is probably better. I've always wanted a copy but my computer won't run it. D:

Mine tends to have a bit of a hissy fit if I try to do too much with Premiere and I need to be trigger happy with the save option - one of the reasons for the change :)
EDIT:
ARGH Disc I was given is knackered, oh well sticking with Premiere :)

Vegas is nice, but a few things you should know.
1) Get the Pro version not the Movie Studio ones. Pro has the ability to mask, while Movie studio doesn't.
2) Get Sony Vegas Pro 10.0.
3) Once you have 10.0, get Boris Continuum Complete 7, and also look for any other plugins you can get. It makes a HUGE difference.
That's pretty much it. I don't have Premier because of the same reason, it acts all wiggy on my computer. Vegas can do it to, but when trying to edit certain file types, like MP4, well mainly MP4s. Another thing I do, since all my anime is in MKV format, is convert them to a high quality MPG file, and make sure to convert it without the audio, it saves a lot of time when putting videos in the time line. I'm rambling. . .
*Edit* Get a free version, wink wink nudge nudge. . . >.>

Wouldn't it be better to demux .mkv container into separate video, audio, subs files, rather than converting into mpg?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rw6d64Vp5M&feature=related
It is part two of the video but YES it does have Masking. It dosn't have the ability to create masks and its much different then using the thing in Sony Vegus. It has a feature to create outlines of masks in the pip that I have not used but I think it can make masks right there in the program too. I just prefer the method in the video I linked.
I know it has it because I use it.
All three of the top editors do the exact same thing, like I keep saying they just have different ease of uses. Cyberlink is known for being sleek and easy to use like Premiere but its features are hidden well. There really is no saying one is better then the others, Vegus is slow and hard to use, Powerdirector is fast but its advanced features are next to imposable to find in it, and Adobe...I really don't know about that that ones negatives.

I was just saying that Cyberlink had Chroma Keyer too which is for the green screen effect, I also said it had masking so...what was the point of quoting me?
Vegus is literally the most difficult video editor to use. A quick google search would prove that. It is difficult because its features are just sprawled out and hard to get use to compared to Premiere and Powerdirector.
I'm arguing with noobs. frustrated_haruhi.gif

No it is not the most difficult editor to use. You just don't have the brain capacity to use it. So instead, you use a slightly better version of WMM to cope with the fact that you can't find the "on" button your computer.
I've been using vegas for a year I never had any trouble learning how to use it. I tried but Premiere and Cyberlink Power Director. I couldn't figure Premiere out and Cyber**** Power Infector was a piece of **** that did nothing but crash and continue to be useless.

Cyberlink Power Director ... did nothing but crash and continue to be useless.
I don't get too whats with all these Cyberlink Crashes. I have tried installing it on three different machines, but it made no difference.
^Maybe it varies by OS. Can't say for sure since I don't know the specifics for this particular case, though.
Also, Vegas is hard to use? What's with you folks? I mean, you just click buttons and stuff. Took me about an hour or so to figure out the basics and set it up the way I wanted it, but that's about it. After that, any qualms could be solved by Google.

^^ Yeah, what Haar said. And the software isn't that outrageously expensive. Vegas movie studio can be had for about $80 (have it, I don't use it) and Vegas Pro (what I do use) was about $200.
Of course I suppose there are , um, free versions out there too (arrrgh, mateys)
