Examples: Gantz, Full metal panic, Initial D, etc, etc...

Umm Japanese dubs will always be better than English ones and you all know this cause its right there in your face. ready wait for it... ... .. LIP SYNC!!!. You can see this in everything that was japanese produced and dubbed in english. English dubs never match the lips completely. "Well they just move the lips" No not exactly... you can pull that crap on flash animations but if its a broadcasted production with 10-20 artists on deck you voice first then animate dialog lip movements.

Now back on topic... XD

The question is a hard one to answer since everyone has different tastes. Me for instance I like anything with complex conflicts so the gundam series's is a prime example. Its just the conflict alone so Ill watch hentai, love-triangles, coming of age, etc...

I also like perverse comedy... GTO & Green Green and a few others got the cake for that, I would say B gata H kei but its just SLUTTY XD

So with my taste in mind id choose:

School Days
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
Gundam Seed
GTO
Gantz
FMA
FMP
The Twelve Kingdoms

Thats all off the top of my head... Theres tons more XD

DBZ, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Naruto, Ect.

Usually they start on basic stuff like those and then find more and more that they like if they become seriously into anime.

Who would we be talking about? People who watch cartoons in general but don't like the Moe style of all anime for the last 20 years or so?

Have them see any Gundam show, Ergo Proxy, Monster or that ****ed up Garter-stocking thing. Deathnote is also good.

For everybody else, it comes down to not actually liking anything that is animated on principle. It's sort of like people who can't watch a movie because "that guy" is in it. I know one who can't bear to watch any film that has Gregory Hines in it. No matter how awesome it may be.

In which case, forget it.

Panty and Stocking w/ Garterbelt is an anime that was meant to be dubbed and aired on Adult Swim, I think that sums it up.

almost all English Dubs are better IMO, just watching the voice actors is proof enough for me. but thats just my offtopic info

FLCL-- HELL YES! its short, trippy, and makes several American refferences, including going South Park style for short periods in one episode. all-in-all a great introduction to anime.

though some might be taken aback by how much of an acid trip it is.

Afro Samurai is a good one as well, cuz its short, and its full of Black Lingo!

It's whether the actor or actress pulls off their lines well that matters, not whether or not it syncs up right. That's a barrier that will never be crossed, because it would be much too time consuming and costly. Honestly, it's no more of a hassle than reading subtitles is.

The problems arise when the dubbing studio doesn't take the dubbing job seriously, or dumbs it down for the kiddies, or decides it can write better than the original japanese writers. Admittedly, sometimes that needs to be done. Sometimes, for example, jokes just don't work in english. But it's when you start doing that gratuitously that you end up with a bad dub >.>

Uuguu~ the damn subtitles thing again. . . look everyone is going to have their preference to like what they like. I watch anime as it's coming out in Japan, so I usually don't have a choice. But sometimes, I like certain English Dubs, like One Piece's Funimation dub, but I compare that to the 4Kids dub. Sometimes it's painful to listen to the English voice actors, especially in old anime. But I liked Kanon's English dub and Lucky Star, I didn't really have a preference for that one, I liked both. But everyone's going to need to drop the subject, 'cause people are going to disagree on **** like this. If your going to watch it in English, watch it in English. If you like Japanese, watch it in Japanese. Hell watch it in French with Spanish subtitles and with Swedish Opening and Ending themes for all I care. Well, I'm rambling, as I do when I get no sleep, but the main point I should try and say is that, if your watching it by yourself, who cares. If your all watching these anime in the same room, then you have legitimate reason to fight over it. That is all. . . -_-*

whats even more funny is when Japanese try to speak English themselves, quite amusing, but harmful to the ears.

another thing is when a character is supposed to have a thick accent, you lose that atribute in subbed, while in dubbed a good voice actor (and now the industry is quite good) garentees to pull you in with the accent

It will always sync because it is animated after the voice, It may be a draft dub but its done first.

While what you say is true its just not practical to half ass it when real money is involved and really is up to the art directors par of quality.
While were on the subject of par of quality I haven't seen a studio that can beat CoMix Wave's amount of love and work thats put into their animation artwork. Their animation backgrounds are utterly amazing. There so damn good I had to grab some of their animation cell backgrounds.

Excuse me for ignoring the gloriuos dub vs sub deathmatch and going back the topic! :praise:

Doesn't the anime actually depend on the person?
If I had to give you a list of reasons, I can think of in instant, that make people dislike anime....

Some dislike anime because of ****ty english/german/insertyourlanguage dubs.
Some dislike anime because of the, often high, japanese voices.
Some dislike anime because they hate/dislike japan in general. (culture shock for example).
Some dislike anime because they think they're for kids.
Some dislike anime because they feel comics are superior. (which is ok, but not a good reason to dislike anime)
Some dislike anime because of the drawing style(s). (chibi, wide heads, over the top-expressions for example).
Some dislike anime because they only know about anime that don't fit their taste. (for example pokemon when they acutally need something like Beserk)
Some dislike them for "insert another reason".

Of course that's just some random scraped together list, but I guess it lists the more frequent reasons.

Basically it's all about the preferences and prejudices of that particular person and how high this persons tolerance or more precisely "the willingness to accept new things" is.

One of the mor more important questions, as this thread already showed us, is "Dub or Sub?".
Seriously, we ALL already know there is NO answer. The best thing you can do is to give them a release with dub AND sub or to learn which they prefer IF they actually know about that for theirselves.

High Quality would be a good choice too. 1080p outdoes 480p afterall.

It's also very favourable to acutally OWN the animes so that you can borrow them to that person. Many people dislike the thought of spending money on something they don't like. And not anybody makes friends with illegally downloaded stuff.

Can't think of other general stuff right know. >_<

To increase the chances a bit more consider the preferences.
An easy example...

Pirates? ---> One Piece or Black Lagoon!
One Piece or Black Lagoon? ---> Black Lagoon! (mostly)
Why, because it's much shorter, the storyline is denser, the character development is faster and it's available in 16:9 and HD from first to last episode.

Also never forget that we don't wish or want to be interested in something. The moment we realize we're interested in it, we've already been interested in it for awhile.
If they like pirates don't tell them of Black Lagoon AND One Piece! Keep one of both for yourself so you'be got a good answer to their (hopefully) "More?".

Some very good points:

*Some dislike anime because of ****ty english/german/insertyourlanguage dubs.

Some like them for that very same reason ... providing the dub is bad in just the right way. Yu-Gu-Oh is comedy gold in the dub (which may be the reason for the abridged version - there really is a lot to work with.)

*Some dislike anime because of the, often high, japanese voices.

Real* Yuri anime doesn't have that. Also, Josei tends to not have the chipmunk voices.

*Made *for* lesbians, as opposed to for guys who are turned on by lesbians.

*Some dislike anime because they hate/dislike japan in general. (culture shock for example).

Can't be helped.

*Some dislike anime because they think they're for kids.

"The secret of NIMH" is a must watch for them. Followed by "the plague dogs."

*Some dislike anime because they feel comics are superior. (which is ok, but not a good reason to dislike anime)

O... K... to each their own, I guess.

*Some dislike anime because of the drawing style(s). (chibi, wide heads, over the top-expressions for example).

That's a valid reason. Not wanting to watch freaks for they are creepy. Yet there are actually many styles of this.

*Some dislike anime because they only know about anime that don't fit their taste. (for example pokemon when they acutally need something like Beserk)

I can relate to that. So, ask them their favourite movie. There seems to be an entire series for whatever the answer would be.

*Some dislike them for "insert another reason".

Can't be helped.

Of course we don't see the typical pirates of the golden age of piracy in Black Lagoon and if someone is after that he/she in fact got the wrong anime, but that doesn't change that Black Lagoon is about a pirates, about modern age pirates however.
Acutally if someone who doesn't know One Piece would suddenly turn on his TV to watch an episode chances are high he/she doesn't see the connection to pirates at all, because there're countless episodes without any ships and water in sight.

What about Haibane Renmei? I've watched a bit of that, and it doesn't feel like your typical "stock" anime series at all. Interestingly, aside from Elfen Lied, it is the only anime I know of that uses classical music as its theme (instead of pop like most series do, or like heavy metal).

And then....I think that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is fantastic, and it doesn't reek of "ANIME" or "JAPAN". So maybe that one (if you're looking for movies).

I'd have to agree with you on both parts. Especially TGWLTT.

I'd also suggest a film like Millennium Actress. Some of it is quite Japanese, but it's more old Japan than new Japan and anime cliches. and it's a beautiful film in general. I've made a lot of people watch it and they really liked it xD

Cowboy Bebop: to me, this show feels much more like a live-action science fiction show than an "anime". The animation just allows the makers to depict space vividly and beautifully without needing "special effects" to "enhance" the action. There's not really any fan service and there's not a blatantly obvious "premise" at first (these things seem to piss of anime haters quite a bit). And this isn't essential, but the characters are not at all drawn like your typical anime stock figures (no big, colorful eyes, no neon-colored/spiky hair, and....no ginormous breasts).

Actually, absence of fan service and silly love triangles is a big thing. All of the people I have met who can't stand anime say that those things grate on them a lot. That's why I wouldn't recommend NGE, for example: even though I personally love the show, it reeks of anime stereotypes (mecha? angsty teenagers? did I mention fan service?).

Dating shows (Clannad, Kanon), endless action based "shonen" series (Naruto, DBZ...I can't stand that one, One Piece, etc.), "magical girl" shows (most of these irritate me, though I want to give Cardcaptor Sakura a try)....these probably won't go over well.

do you think Kodomo no Jikan would be an acceptable one?

I haven't seen it, so I can't say. The Jikan clip in AMV Hell 5 always makes me start thinking "LOLITA", though. :}

By the way, has anyone seen an anime called "Coyote Ragtime Show"? A reviewer whom I like has recommended it, and I'm wondering if it's worth seeing.

Honestly, I don't really think so. Unless the person is VERY open-minded. I can say for sure that most of my anime-loving friends would see it as a shallow excuse for loli content, so I'm thinking people who don't watch anime would be even more weirded out by it.

Personally, I love the manga series. Once you get past the loli service, it actually gets very emotional. I can't say I've seen the anime though, so I'm not sure whether it's as serious.
