I'll probably release season 2 of amv minis using MKV container rather than MP4, unless a lot of people object to it.
MP4 causes 1-2 frames of desync, while MKV keeps the sync accurate.
So this is why I want to make the change.
Does anyone even care?

Its just the container itself that I hate not whats in it, Its nice to have subs and multiple video, audio, streams all it one package but the thing that I dislike about it is that its not supported on alot of devices and I dont see the point in useing it unless your adding subs plus extra audio tracks and maybe chapters. Id still pick AVI, MP4 over MKV cause atleast those can be opened on most gadgets.
also what does mkv have to do with "keeps the sync accurate"? as far as I know thats mostly dependent on whats inside the mkv and whats decoding it, A 1080 h264 without dxva or equivalent will drop frames in a mkv as well as a mp4 on a low spec PC also the type of renderer your using will play a part also. 1-2 frames whos really gonna notice... we'll just balme it on the editors for the hell of it XD
Just for the lulz ill see if im dropping frames...

Works for me. A/V sync > pretty much all else. Given that past encodings weren't device-friendly in the first place, it makes little difference to me - I'll have to transcode either way. :(

You have a point... I was just referring to that most devices can open MP4's and AVI's whether or not it will play whats inside them is another story.

Hell, to put the old AMV Minis on my phone I had to use your Mobile Friendly versions anyways, so the container doesn't really matter to me at all. My computer seems to play MKV files better than MP4's anyhow, so I'd rather have those. But what this really opens up is a possible AMV Minis Special Edition Limited Box Set DVD Extravaganza. . . with commentaries. It would be awesome if I could watch a Mini's episode with Zarx's commentary, and that seems like it would be easier to do with MKV's, you know, multiple audio tracks *^_^*

Huh? XD I never uploaded the mobile versions of the mini's... there are tables set in the alternative download mirrors thread but those are placeholders with blank links... I got lazy which reminds me that I should get them done so I dunno where the hell you got them but they weren't from me :P
Also remember that their just containers which hold A/V streams. you really cant compare the two (MP4,MKV) in terms of playback performance since they might have two different encoded streams. Decoders then get called up to the plate and thats where the real labor takes place. In laymans terms its like the difference between ZIP, RAR archives and comparing which of the two extract faster with different file sizes in each archive XD
Only real way to test both is to have them with the exact same encoded streams and test them across different decoders and PC's but even trying to do a test would seem pointless and probably wont turn up any results... To slap it all out on the table its just difference in features and what stream formats they can contain. FYI MKV can hold anything so you never know whats in it till you look inside... its like playing Russian roulette then finding out you need some crazy ass codec to play something but since everythings h264 these days its kind of a rarity. XD

Well, I'm not that much of an idiot. I know that mp4 and mkv are just containers and just allow playback of A/V, but what I meant is that my computer seems to be retarded when it comes to Mpeg-4, it seems to like H264 a lot better, as I never have issues with it. But, whatever, MP4 or MKV, either way it won't make any difference as far as quality or anything. Making it AVI or MPEG or AVCHD etc. won't really change much. It should be what the general amout of peoples computers can play, right? If your computer is old, I doubt it'll be able to handle anything in any HD format, whatever the container is, right? But, then again, I'm just speaking out of my ass, I'm not to much of expert on this stuff like you are Rat, as long as it plays I'm fine with it. I just hope Zarx doesn't try anything fancy and ****s up the videos or something, but those kinds of worries are unfounded, as I'm sure Zarx has been doing this for quite a long time, well, at least longer than I have.
And, I don't have any clue where I got the mobile mini's, it's been quiet a while, and I download so much random crap (About 2.5TB worth) that I can barely keep up. Hell, for all I know I did it myself. I just remembered your old thread talking about mobile versions, and I thought I got them from there.... hm, gotta stop downloading crap. XD

And I never wanted to imply that you were implying that I was an idiot, I imply that by implicating myself as an idiot makes me an idiot. . . and I just confused my self.

I think this might be some good info, seeing as the upcoming new standard for fansubbers is to use MKV, you could always use Avidemux and convert the files to a different container so that it makes it usable in Vegas. Or you could do it with a different video converter, but Avidemux is the best, as you don't lose very much frame rate when you convert, unlike other converters I've tried.

I like MP4 better only because I show the AMV series at "anime nights" with friends. Since we use a tv screen MP4 works well due to use having to use an 360 or PS3 to watch the videos.
But it's cool ether way I guess, I would just convert it myself.

I'm flatly opposed to this on several grounds.
MKV is not readily supported on consoles for play on the tv.
Most computers without special codecs can run AVIs, MP4s, and WMVs with no added effort.
The frame lag issue with MP4s I've not noticed on my rig whatsoever compared to what's been stated.
MP4s I've noticed tend to be smaller (most of the time) compared to MKV.

Fair enough

You don't need a codex, just VLC Player and AVI/MP4/WMV tend to be larger than MKV of the same quality.

Its a container, how the hell would it be smaller with the same quality mp4 shoved in it.
VLC's codecs are built in and are limited in features, My Examples...
1. VLC's AC3 decoder wont output to my spdif connection when 5.1 audio is being played.
2. I dont even think VLC supports DXVA on its h264 decoder.

Download CCCP (http://cccp-project.net/) (Combined Community Codec Pack) which also includes Media Player Classic. Best codec pack and media player for Windows. :D
Also, MKV is the best video container currently in existence and there is no reason for anyone not to use it for content shared on the web.
