I'm pretty new to anime (and this website, so hi everybody) ; a year and a half ago the floor in my dormitory started watching Naruto, so I watched with them as an excuse to hang out, as i'm pretty shy otherwise. A year and a half later and I've watched several series on my own, and I'd call myself pretty addicted.
From watching the AMV Hell series, and asking some friends, i've put together a list of anime I want to watch, so I want to ask, "do you have any suggestions?" Most of my friends only watch the shonen fighting epics (epic as in really long lasting series), and I'm looking for other genres, just to get a good feel for anime that aren't about explosions (though explosions are nice too).

Another way to think about this is: If there were a list of anime that every otaku should see, what would be on it?

On my list - (not necessarily going to watch, but considering)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - (this is on the top of the list, but the others are in no particular order)
Digimon - (watched this as a child, must rewatch)
Lucky Star - (seems girly, but also seems popular (also i heard this makes fun of other anime, so should I save this 4 last?))
Azumanga Daioh
Elfen Lied
Rozen Maiden - (this is the desu show, only reason I want to watch it)
Death note
The legend of Zelda - (heard it sucks, but it's zelda, so i'll probably watch it)
Full Metal alchemist
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Ghost in a Shell
Berserk
Bobobo-bo bo-bobo - (did I spell this right?)
love ru - (i don't remember why this is on my list)
kashimisi girl meets girl - (just from the one clip in Hell 5)
clannad - (I heard this had something to do with a starfish fetish. . . I was intrigued)

Already watched (with notes if it'll show what I like/dislike)

Naruto - (loved it)
Cowboy Bebop - (just too awesome)
Black Heaven - (worth my time, maybe even worth a re-watch)
Dragonball - (dragonball was better than Z, but Z was still good, I didn't enjoy GT, but i'm OCD and have to finish what I start, so I watched it anyway)
Love Hina - (so funny, so good)
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan - (I roflol the whole time)
Ikki Tousen - (found this from an amv. This wasn't good but I enjoyed watching it. If that makes any sense. Season 1 was alright everything else sucked)
Fooly Cooly - (awesome)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - (good, not great, but then again I'm OCD and had to watch every endless 8 episode (season 2 really ruined this show 4 me))

If you recommend a show, try to sell it a little, If you just say the name of the show I'll probably ignore your post. I also do his thing where I argue against everything in your post, that really just means I'm interested in your suggestion and want you to argue back why your show is great (if you can't then the show probably isn't that great right?).

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - is OK, but can probably wait - unless you really like insane giant robot shows. In which case, watch Evangelion first. I think it makes it much funnier.

Azumanga Daioh - must see.

Elfen Lied - how much gore can you handle? Seriously? This is violent, kinky and sadistic. The manga even moreso.

Rozen Maiden - Higurashi has more desu. And gore. And less dolls. But it's good anyway. A classic even.

Try to see Higurashi no naku Koroni, and the sequel. Not so sure about the next couple of sequels, the whole thing looked resolved by the second to me.

Death note - another must see.

Ghost in a Shell - the movie is OK, the shows are a bit better. Just turn on your brain.

Berserk - not as gory as Elfen Lied, and anachronistic as hell, but definitely worth the time.

Must see:

Maria sama ga miteru - it's about lesbians, it's not ecci, it's funny, but not deliberately. That this is a *very serious* drama only makes it funnier. And quite a lot of shows make fun of this, making it a must see, regardless of how you enjoy yuri. (Watch this *before* Lucky Star, K?mpfer, Cromartie and Maria+Holic.)

Also, try to find the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Oddly enough it's not about explosions at all. (I heard somewhere that girls liked Mecha shows... japanese girls, that is.) This has plot and characters.
It's the show that got cancelled because kids thought it was boring, then revived because adults thought it was awesome.

Speaking of Mecha - Code Geass. Great stuff. It's like Richard III, only piss drunk and with mecha. It also has one of the most epic soundtracks I've ever heard.

Ouran High school host club - because it's funny.

Also worth a look:

Ergo Proxy - if you liked Ghost in the shell
Genshiken - a very calm, relaitvely down to earth show (the only anime I have yet seen in which everything that happens actually could happen in real life.)
Sasameki Koto - it's about lesbians, it's not ecci, it's *deliberately* funny.
Sailor Moon. It's not all good, but surprizingly it mostly is.
Kimi ni todoke - it's above average school romance. Somewhat better than Clannad. With fewer starfish.
Wallflower/yamato nadeshiko shichi henge - the same humour in general as in ouran, about some guys who get free lodgins in exchange for making a nutty girl into a lady. There's a live action version that's even funnier.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - (this is on the top of the list, but the others are in no particular order) - HELL YES

Digimon - (watched this as a child, must rewatch) - seriously?

Lucky Star - (seems girly, but also seems popular (also i heard this makes fun of other anime, so should I save this 4 last?)) - IMO its only worth watching for the "Lucky Channel" segment at the end

Azumanga Daioh - not my cut of tea, its about school, its boring, it has some form of comedy?

Elfen Lied - dont let the first episode scare you, its pretty damn awesome

Rozen Maiden - (this is the desu show, only reason I want to watch it) - never seen

Death note - everyone should watch it

The legend of Zelda - (heard it sucks, but it's zelda, so i'll probably watch it) - do it for the lolz

Full Metal alchemist - I never got into it, but alot of people loved it

Neon Genesis Evangelion - hell no, I know alot of people liked it, but its stupid

Ghost in a Shell - classic!

Berserk - more blood than in Jigsaw's morning shake, more midevil than WoW!

Bobobo-bo bo-bobo - (did I spell this right?) - you are gonna hate yourself for watching it

love ru - (i don't remember why this is on my list) - its a harem, prepare for tits!

kashimisi girl meets girl - (just from the one clip in Hell 5) - some shows are worth just for that one clip man

clannad - (I heard this had something to do with a starfish fetish. . . I was intrigued) - HELL YES, this show and its sequel are the top tear-jerking animes

that my take on your list

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: As far as anime goes, it's pretty damn good, but, in terms of mecha, it is only decent.
Digimon: Go ahead and rewatch it.
Lucky Star: It isn't worth your time. It is just a piece of **** that isn't remotely funny.
Azumanga Daioh: It is great for a slice-of-life anime.
Elfen Lied: "LOL ITS SO GORRY XD" It's not worth your time.
Rozen Maiden: Watch it, but skip Traumend.
Death note: Give it a watch. If you don't like it in the first two episodes , drop it.
The legend of Zelda: Even if you are a fan of Legend of Zelda, don't watch it.
Full Metal Alchemist: Not as good as everybody makes it out to be, so don't get your hopes up.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: This show is more complex. You should watch it, but don't be afraid to drop it. If you don't get into the show, watch the movies (1.11 and 2.22). Also note that the show pretty much made the personalities found in the anime of today.
Ghost in a Shell: I'd recommend it.
Berserk: Read the manga, skip the anime.
Bobobo-bo bo-bobo: It is okay for a comedy, but not the best.
Love Ru: Pretty uninteresting.
kashimisi girl meets girl: Not worth your time.
clannad: Watch it, but don't get too attached to Nagisa.

Also, please watch what Lurker recommended.

Lucky Star was ****.
The plot was generally absent through out the whole show.
The writing was ****.
The comedy was ****.
The characters were too cliche.
Most of the characters just needed a punch to the face.
The show, as a whole, was ****.

Azumanga was actually enjoyable and didn't have many issues.

Alright, a good list to watch, here are some others you might enjoy.

Ao no Exorcist - It's about the son of Satan. It's pretty good, but there are only 5 episodes out right now, so If your into watching the whole series in one go, you should wait.

A Channel - A Channel is an anime based off a four panel manga similar to lucky star. I've only seen a few episodes nut it's pretty damn hilarious.

Dragon Crisis! - A short series, kind of a generic shonen action series. but then again there's nothing wrong with that. If I go on about it though, I'll spoil the ending.

Angel Beats! - Probably one of the best anime out right now (in my opinion). It's about a bunch of kids that can't die in a school. Or, it's not that they can't die, it's that they're already dead, and are trapped in a kind of limbo. It gets pretty funny a some parts.

Hidan no Aria - Another generic shonen anime. I like it though. it's cute.

High School of the Dead - If you like anything related to zombies, then you'll like this.

School Days - I my opinion one of the most original anime out there, for the fact that it can make you hate the main character in about three or four episodes. Worth a watch through.

Kodomo no Jikan - Now this one is a bit tricky, as it's a lolicon anime. It's cute and funny, but there is one scene at the end of it that basically shut down the western release.

Koi Kaze - Really good romance anime, once you can get past the fact that it's incest.

Air, Kannon, Clannad - All three of these are awesome, and I encourage everyone to watch these.

I could keep going all day.

Lucky Star:

The plot was generally absent through out the whole show.

There rarely if ever is plot in those sort of shows.

Most of the characters just needed a punch to the face.

I agree that would have improved the show - but then I liked Elfen Lied for pretty much that.

Azumanga is by far better - but there are far worse things out there than LS. Dragonball... Naruto... etc.

The guy who got me into this swore by Full Metal Alchemist. I never got into it. Dropped it after a couple episodes. If you can't stand the first episode, and it gets worse from there, that's it. Forget it. It's likely not your thing.

There's nothing bad with Lucky Star, I mean, when I watched it, one day I was at school, and my classmate said: WTH are ya watchin?? -I said: hey! is a pretty funny anime, and we watched the whole episode during the breaks xD.

Hmm i recommend watching:
Twelve Kingdoms (to me awesome overall fantasy)
Eve no Jikan Movie (awesome theme: androids going self-aware, although they're loving and befriending rather than killing...)
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away - a golden oldie must-watch -movie-)
Laputa - The Castle in the Sky (a golden oldie must-watch -movie-)
Nausica? of the Valley of the Wind (a golden oldie must-watch -movie-)
Kiki's Delivery Service (a golden oldie must-watch -movie-)
Mononoke Hime (almost a golden oldie must-watch -movie-)
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu (awesome fun)
Last Exile (awesome anime)
Spice and Wolf (season 1 and 2)
Ghost Hunt (the title says it all)
Beck (if you like music stories)
Nodame Cantabile (if you like music stories)
Haibane Renmei (if you like slow moving stories that are generally laid-back)
Sora no Woto (also a slow moving story, generally laid-back, post-apocalyptic)
Break Blade (mech)
Steamboy (very good quality animation -movie-)
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (a good 'sad-story' anime - a little short)
Toshokan Sensou (fighting for freedom of speech - it's hard to explain)
Valkyria Chronicles (war time anime, not related to irl wars)
Toradora (A fun love story)
Summer Wars (-movie-)
Nyan Koi
Mai-HIME
Mai-Otome
Claymore

As recommended by others:
Ghost in the Shell (you have got to watch these, especially Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence -movie-)
Hellsing
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Angelic Layer
Azumanga Daioh
Black Lagoon
Great teacher Onizuka

There are other anime i would recommend, but i think the list is big enough for now -.-

My respectful review of Bleach.

Bleach is a show about the mass gathering of cliche characters and horrible story writing. It is the worst of The Big Three. The characters have only one personality and unintentionally represent a cliche in anime. The female characters don’t really have any differences outside of appearance because of their similar bitch-trait. The story is more of a cluster **** than Naruto’s. One second they are fighting Hurr-Durr Soul Derpers, then the next second they are fighting some ****ty cast of villains who use that “final form” ****. The fights are horribly played out. One character will be getting the **** beat out of him/her, but then one of two things happen. The character will pull some **** out of his/her ass at the last second, or the character will have someone save them at the last second. The show is a predictable mess that should have ended long ago. In short, the show shouldn’t exist. It’s ****ing horrible.

If I were you, Zemoo, I'd avoid the big three.

If you decide to watch Evangelion.....

You do not get answers fast. And it is a show that requires some thinking about.

Although I love the show, I have discovered that I like the new "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies a bit better: the animation is sharper, characters are more relatable, and none of the overall storyline or complexity of theme is lost (although they did cut some of my favorite angel battles, particularly the one with the "whale" angel and the one with the lava creature.

I still dont understand why anyone would put up with Evangelion, but thats just my take on it.

SarcotarascusN

Different opinions, I suppose.

Going back to the first topic....if you love Cowboy Bebop, you will probably at least like Samurai Champloo. I would give it a try (I have also heard that the English dub for that is one of the best in Anime, although I wouldn't know, since I've only seen it with subtitles).

In fact, I get the impression that you are generally fairly open minded, although you seem to lean away from "Shojo" shows, magical girl comedies, and incredibly surreal things. That's probably a good approach to have.

Going by your list....

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - This is a VERY cheesy show. You will enjoy it if you turn off the critical aspects of your brain when you watch it. The animation is a bit cheap, too.
Digimon - I'm not sure whether you'd get the same enjoyment now. Give it a try, but don't get your hopes up.
Lucky Star - Haven't seen, but having seen the AMV Hell Clips, the cheapness of the animation bothers me.
Azumanga Daioh- Takes getting used to, but has some of the best, sweetest characters in Anime, and it does a lot with very little plot. Also, it's surprisingly not girlish for a show with barely any boys.
Elfen Lied - GORE. GORE. GORE. Haven't seen, but some of the reviews have made me want to check it out.
Rozen Maiden - Haven't seen.
Death note - Have no desire to see. But you might like it if you've seen Cowboy Bebop...the animation looks as good, and I've heard that it's very well plotted. Something about it bothers me, though.
The legend of Zelda - Not actually anime.
Full Metal alchemist - I only saw "brotherhood" (there are two series), but I didn't like the first few episodes much. It seemed a bit too hyperactive and "all over the place" (which some anime is like...it's a trend in Japanese culture. If you watch stuff like "Yakitate! Japan" and "Goodbye, Mr. Despair! You will get the same feeling). As a side note....the dub has some of the most "I WANNA BE A MAN", cloying, annoying acting I have yet heard in anime. But I will say it's worth trying, and I want to give it another chance as well.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Check it out. It polarizes people.
Ghost in a Shell - Haven't seen, but this is probably worth checking out if you like cyperpunk ( non-anime films like Blade Runner or "Robocop", for example)
Berserk - Haven't seen.
Bobobo-bo bo-bobo - This show has a guy...who fights villains with NOSE HAIR. Of all things.....
love ru - Never seen it.
kashimisi girl meets girl - I've heard this show is cheesy and gimmicky, and that the whole thing about the main character turning into a girl doesn't work well (one reviewer's take is that he's so effeminate as a boy that it's barely a change).
clannad - I also want to see this one.

I would recommend Wolf's Rain as well.....but it has some plot holes and boring recap episodes that keep it from being perfect.

My list won't be long because Manga is where it's at.

Oh man, you..Watched...Love hina...
You're strong willed, Because somehow i actually READ the entire thing because it was a train wreck and I couldn't take my eyes away from it

I couldn't get through the first 3 episodes of Lucky Star.
I just couldn't do that to myself.

But I recommend
[School Days], Although it twists the story around from it's manga original. ALOT.
A ****ing hell of a lot. Two completely different stories. Kinda pissed me off how they portrayed the main character. It's one i'd recommend reading the original manga for first, then watching it. But it's how School Romance Stories should be. That is all.

[Elfen Lied] manages to be one of the most GORY anime's ever created AND one of the most emotionally riveting stories ever told. People who actually watch the entire thing forget about the gore and remember it for being an original tear jerker with an unforgettable plot.

[GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka] - Is just great. I lolled throughout the entire thing. Gangster Becomes Teacher. ****s **** up and somehow manages to fix problems at the same time.

[Death Note] Is a must see. True to it's manga origin and original.
Genius gets a book that Kills anyone who's name is written in it.
Troll time.

[Neon Genesis Evangelion] Confused the hell out of me in the manga but was a tad bit more comprehensive in the anime. I recommend it because their are alot of Japanese Mech Anime's, But this one is Original and builds characters you care about.

[HOTD - High School of the Dead] - Was a well produced, high-end anime. You have your basic "Zombiez R Takin' Ovr" scheme, but with an exceptional plot, characters you become interested in, and Ass loads of Fan service. Literally. I think someone did the math and theres atleast 1 tit jiggling every 33.4 seconds

If i think of more, I'll edit. Brains kind of dead right now.

[School Days], Although it twists the story around from it's manga original

School Days didnt start as a manga if your referring to "Original content", It was an adult pc visual novel. Theres no way it could be accurately adapted to an anime cause it was multi-pathed with 20 different possible endings. The manga came out 2yrs later after the VN then the anime soon followed after.

I heard it was a PC Visual Novel thing with many variable endings, I just thought it was based off of the Manga for some reason, even though it could have easily been made however the hell they wanted it to because it's open ended.

I'll just say I preferred the manga adaptation of it, as a decided storyline.

Thanks for pointing that out though

[Elfen Lied] manages to be one of the most GORY anime's ever created AND one of the most emotionally riveting stories ever told. People who actually watch the entire thing forget about the gore and remember it for being an original tear jerker with an unforgettable plot.

Elfen Lied wasn't THAT gory, hell, 95% of the gore is in the first 10 minutes (maybe less than that). If you want gory, Higurashi's first season was full of it. And I haven't seen Gantz yet, but that was supposed to be pretty gory as well.

Yeah, but when the gore came, it came. and higurashi was understandable gore. Elfen lied was like, "Why the hell was it even necessary to animate that part of the body's insides with that much detail?"

GANTZ is ****ing awesome. it has one of the top art styles of all manga, and its also one of (if not the worst) manga you can ever read.

the anime sucks though, you might get frustrated with the plot

still, no anime so far (aside from gero anime) can top the Hellsing OVAs

Gantz is slow moving. It takes 26 eps to tell 12 ep wort of story. There is, however, a movie. I have been wanting to see that.

Not sure about the Lucky Star hating. Sure, it's not the best show ever, but it's a tolerable waste of time with unbelieavable characters.

Stay the hell away from Hidamari. That is ****. If you think Lucky Star is bad, you may turn homicidal from watching Hidamari.

In fact, I get the impression that you are generally fairly open minded, although you seem to lean away from "Shojo" shows, magical girl comedies, and incredibly surreal things. That's probably a good approach to have.

Me, I like shojo better. Those shows have relatable characters. Yuri is even better - more realistic, more relatable... for some reason. And unintentionally hilarious.

You must see at least one yuri show, just to see what it's like. (I think I have seen one of each - seen mecha, both real robot and super robot, (mecha tends toward drama, real robot even moreso) seen harem shows, of them School Days is the most evil, seen magical girl, of which Sailor Moon is best, seen Romance - Kimi ni Todoke is best. I could go on...)

Elfen Lied - GORE. GORE. GORE. Haven't seen, but some of the reviews have made me want to check it out.

But gore with plot. The manga is somewhat better. And it manages to be even creepier.

Mnemosyne is also good for gore. Think: Highlander, but with monsters.

Also: Geno Cyber. And Megazone 23. (It's "the Matrix.") Higurashi has some gore. Not at all that much. But it gets built up so artfully. Is a really good show.

Death note - Have no desire to see. But you might like it if you've seen Cowboy Bebop...the animation looks as good, and I've heard that it's very well plotted. Something about it bothers me, though.

Death note is nothing like Cowboy Bebop. Both are really good in their own way.

What could I compare Death Note to? Hmm... Sherlock Holmes? But with a truly evil villain as MC. And the adversary is fukin evil a well. And the comic relief is a demon of some sort.

Ghost in a Shell - Haven't seen, but this is probably worth checking out if you like cyperpunk ( non-anime films like Blade Runner or "Robocop", for example)

Ghost in the shell is Blade Runner, with the lights on. Or during daytime. What he said.

love ru - Never seen it.

Repeat after me: "Fanservice."

kashimisi girl meets girl - I've heard this show is cheesy and gimmicky, and that the whole thing about the main character turning into a girl doesn't work well (one reviewer's take is that he's so effeminate as a boy that it's barely a change).

You heard right. The show is entertaining enough, but ... stupid. That guy takes his transformation way too easy. One wonders why that is even a plot point. See Princess princess instead. Now that is a ****ed up show.

clannad - I also want to see this one.

See it. If only to hear the Dango song at the end. And the "what if" bit in the end. And the second season for the surreal horror of it.

If you like that, see Saikano.

actualy Elfen lied isnt so much gore as it is dismemberment. the only gore scene is really when the directors daughter rips apart that one woman.

other than that, its all just dismembering people with alot of blood.

but the plot is too damn beautiful, the end is almost worth crying at.

AND THE ****ING SOUNDTRACK IS THE ****!

Elfen Lied was better as a manga - at least the ending.

Im not gonna lie here, the art in the manga of Elfen Lied sucked, the ending was only better because it completed the series, but its impossible to just pick up where the anime left off in the manga.

Oh no...I don;t have a problem with Shojo shows. I really want to see Cardcaptor Sakura, actually. I just meant that the person who started this thread shows no sign of being interested in them.

Thanks for the thoughts, by the way.

Hmm I wouldnt consider gantz excessively gory, Its the kinda gore thats used properly at the right time as opposed to painting the screen red for no reason. Id put it on par with elfen lied but without all the cute Nyu crap.

Yes but was it spaced out through out the entire series, like a constant stream of blood and gore? From the clips I've seen that seems to be the case. Elfen Lied kinda threw it out there, all in your face and ****, then tucked it away and let you take little sneak peaks at what could have been. It fizzled out in the first few minutes, leaving you kinda desensitized to the rest of the gore in the rest of the series. Like when you see Lucy amputate Nana you think, "Well, that was gory, but not as bad as the first five minutes of the show." You can't give fans a taste and not expect them to want more. There should have been increasing amounts of sadistic **** going on in that, things they would show you that you couldn't unsee, **** that would make a war vet cringe in horror in disgust!

but overall a good series.

RBRat3
05-20-2011, 08:50 AM
I wouldnt say it was a constant stream of gore, theres plenty of dialogue filler that offsets that ( Alot of useless bitching ). Its pretty close to being like that buts its not excessive. Also if your gonna look up gantz clips of course your gonna get the gory ones cause no one cares about fillers on youtube XD

I think we can agree GANTZ is just a bitching mind****. period. honestly, the anime sucked, props to the voice actors for not throwing up over the BS dialog.

I guess when it comes down to gore, people like to think they are something special because they got to see cartoon dismemberment etc etc... like it adds to some magical realism that such portrayed is natural
