Here's where discussion on the project which we hope will someday be referred to as "AMV Hell: Season 2" will commence. Looking for all and any supporters. And, Zarxrax, with all due respect (knuckles and all), we don't wish to take AMV Hell away from you. We simply wish to continue the series and have realized it is selfish of us to demand you continue. We hope to do you proud!
Now that the a**kissing is out of the way, let's get a few things straight:
Do we want to do CE style or standard compilation style?
Any suggestions for Master editor? Should we attempt to try without one?
Ideas on new/updated transitions?
Length of the project?
Does this avatar make me look fat?
How will we receive submitions? Who will be in charge of housing it all?
Rules for submitions? How far do we want to go?
I'm in no place to say who should do what, but I personally feel that we should try to make the project between half and hour to an hour. As for skit length, I'd like to see some longer fare this time around (between one and two minutes).
Also, let's get creative with themes and running gags; I was impressed with "Hell0 Fairy"'s variety in this department, as well as the reapperances of Weird Al's "Albuquerque" in CE.

Compilation style, from 15 minutes to 25 minutes, i think instead of a "master ediotr" we have "mentors" like phatpug and corpsegoddess (from what i remember they were both selected by the forum as "best editors" in hell 4). I think a new transition IS in order but i am still brainstorming, no, you don't look fat (just menacing), submissions should be done through FTP or gmail email client we can easily set up (kind of like what that other amv hell-esq project who has been posting on these boards is doing), submissions should be any source goes (meaning spoken, commercial, song, etc...and the rest of the normal hell rules apply?)
Want to take this thing by the horns UNOwen and start kickin ass?

The problem with that is some bad amvs will inevitably slip into the final project and when they do, you're stuck watching a boring amv for two minutes. The 30 second cap is what makes the style so forgiving and keeps the viewer's interest.

i agree, i think amv hell is great because it moves so briskly. I'm down for an extention of the "30 second rule" where it is applicable, however two minutes seems overkill for an MEP with the history that hell has.
I guess I see your point. It's just that whenever I think of AMV's like Osaka's Dream from Hell 3, it just feels like there's so much potential. Still, your right, we should keep it short and sweet (perfect for unexperienced editors like, well, me).

anyone have an idea for the transitions? I was thinking star wars them...for the obvious title reference, but my star wars memory is a little fuzzy, any awsome screens with maybe an awsome 16 bit sound jingle...(remember, brainstorming here)
We could have a few transitions like when the M.F. shoots into hyperdrive. This might get old after a while, though.

Short and sweet it is. I would like to have a healthy mix of 5 second clips with up to 45 sec clips. Having very short clips emphasizes the feelings of wackiness and randomness that we hope to achieve. That brings another issue to light. Should we put a cap on the amount of clips to be included from each show? I'm thinking we should just put it out there as say that for our 35 min of Hell, no more that 5 min worth of submitions from an anime series (that includes multiple seasons and spin-offs that still incorporate the same characters). If we simply say that your best chance of getting a clip used is to use a lesser known anime, that should open the doors of creativity and increase the variety of clips!

That is true however it may open up a pandora's box of poorly made obscurity for the sake of merely making it IN to the project. I am down for the cap though, as it will probably be me and you UNOwen who will be forced to sift through the hours of poorly made WMM files and subtitle loaded, interlaced fuzzy, youtube quality rip footage. ;D bring it on!

I think it should be:
CE Style (good warm-up for a longer compliation)...although I have no real perference on this.
Up to 45 second submissions
No logos on files.
I also formally request to be a judge.
EDIT: also, I might be able to get a ftp set up, but no guarentees. It all depends on how my web host likes it.
EDIT2: FTP set up is complete...

we have quite a few things to get through before we start selecting judges i think. We may have an ftp set up, let's someone write up a rules list similar to that of hell 4 rule set (with the corrections we have made since the beginning of this thread) and let's post it up. Next, when do we want to start accepting submissions? what kinds of audio will be accepted? What aspect ratio? c'mon yall, tons to be done!
A democratic method of choice does sound appealing, especially since this is a forum-sprung idea. Why not give those involved general consensus for the aformentioned "mentor" editors to consider in their selection?
And Matt, I apologize, but I know little to nothing about "aspect ratios" and such. Perhaps it's time I gave those AMV.org how-to guides another glance.

FTP works, btw...will give out password once I'm fully ready to open my website -_-
Aspect ratio...at least 640x480 for each clip.
No Logos on clips
audio can be anything, as long as the language and subject matter are kept within the 16+ range
clips may not show frontal nudity, acts of sex, or excessive violence. Pantsu is alright. XD

some e-mail clients limit the size of attachments, and with email, it's hard to have a group collaboration. FTP is better for both...
that and you're not trying to email it to everyone involved...

WOW... looks like the guys at the org shot down the thread for this new hell.
I guess I should also ask a couple questions...
What name will this hell have? (I think we can come up with a better name than "AMV Hell: Teh 4-um S7rik3s B4ck!")
When is the deadline for submissions?
When will this hell become released?
Why change the type of transition?
Would there be a list of who made it into this new Hell just like AMV Hell 4?
How strict will the selection of clips be? (as strict as Hell 4 or 3?)
Also... I think the type of videos should be clarified and listed:
uncompressed, Divx, WMV, or lagarith?
only 640X480?
allow subtitles?
only anime or allow anime look-alike? (i.e. Avatar)
Whats minimum and maximum clip duration?
I know some of these have been clarified already but I feel it may do good if all this information was in one place (preferbly the first post)
And about the transitions, I understand that we probly wouldn't be able to use the very same transition that was used in the Hell series, but why not use a different television transition. I find the idea of changing channels gives the ADD sense hell is meant to have. and as short as each clips are going to be, I think that type of transition works well.
Teh 4-um S7rik3s B4ck! is in fact the result of much debate and brainstorming, so for now, that seems to be the working title. As for your point on transitions, I have to agree. While a different transition could certainly be conceived, given the nature and premise of the project, channel surfing is likely our best option.

Submissions and deadline have not been decided yet.
Transition will look different, but will still be a TV changing the channel, me thinks...
Strict acceptance? AMVs that will most likely be put in are put in of their own merit, not because they passed a bar. ODM has that trouble...and it turned into putting files that were only alright into the final result. Not good.
I said at least 640x480, since that's the format that the final result will be put in anyway. note that 3 and 4 are in 640x480.
WMV is hard to deal with, so that's out...
Subtitles can be kept in if they add to the clip, otherwise, they only drag it down.
I would perfer is it was only anime that made it through...mainly because that the American-made ones aren't exactly doing anything different that we can make fun of -_-
Havn't heard of a minimum before...although I'm liking that there should be a 45 second limit to it.
But that's only my thoughts on it.

Okay, no need to freak. We are perfectly entitled to make our own project as opposed to joining another. The whole point of this thing is that it will be made or at least formed by members of the AMV Hell forums. As for the AMV Hell monicker, there has been plenty of debate about that already and it sounds like we will be losing it; however, the influence of AMV Hell will almost certainly be addressed in one form or another.
May I say something? I think, and please forgive me if I'm out of line here, that your just ticked that we're doing our thing rather than coming to help with yours. I've known of your AMV remix project for some time now, and I completely support what you're doing. Be that as it may, we have chosen to go do our own thing. there's no rule stating that an editor can't help with to projects if he or she feels like it, and if you asked nicely, I'm fairly certain there are a few who would. Just don't have a fit because there's yet another AMV Hell-influenced project out there. If anything, you should be happy that there are so many in the works; I know I am.

Also we should have the Main Editor volunteer soon. We can't do anything until someone takes control. Then we need judges to volunteer.

i agree with the fact we shouldnt set a time, however it is appropriate to forecast a "goal" time, that way when going through submisions we have an idea of where we are going with it.
As for the "amster editor" core (yes, it would be wise to have 2-3), i think nominations are in order. If anyone has any, spit em out and we'll decide.

here's the thing. Even Zarx and SS weren't good at editing in the beginnig. This is most of our first, major, endeavors. Adobe premiere has a 30 day complete free trial...download it when the submissions start. Read up on some guides found on the.org, and who knows, you might suprise yourself as to what you can do.
I know this is off topic, but maybe it will help to motivate the troops..haha. I play the guitar, and for the longest time i couldnt get that "feeling". I knew theory, i understood the tech, i read the music, but i was missing that something extra. I thought that because i was missing it i could NEVER hope to be in a band, which was my goal from the start. I couldnt take it anymore, and one day asked a girl i knew that could sing to jam along with me one afternoon...and once i gt over the nervousness, and realized the worst thing i could do was mess up, i had so much fun and learned SO MUCH MORE. Books are great, information is great, but they mean nothing without experience and true learning occurs when you try it out.
Those of you who dont think you can edit, try it. When we get closer to submission time i will set up my email where you can send me vids and i can help you with smoothing things out, pointing you in the right direction for some codecs, etc. It might seem like a lot in the beginning, but trust me, when you edit something, and you see it on the big screen with your peers laughing at the creative and awesome content you came up with, there is no greater feeling.
Let's do it, let's bring em' to HELL!

I was going to mention Uknown but I wasn't sure he was an editor. His name must be different in the credits. I want to help in a larger capacity but my knowledge of editing is limited. The best I can do is help mediate the forums. No objections so far.
here's the thing. Even Zarx and SS weren't good at editing in the beginnig. This is most of our first, major, endeavors. Adobe premiere has a 300 day complete free trial...download it when the submissions start.
Matt, Unowen and Corpsegoddess are my frontrunners. I'm behind you all the way, guys.
This weekend, I'll give downloading Premiere a try, then get to making some AMVs. I've had some neat ideas for a while now (I even keep a journal), and if there are any I find myself unable to do (due to lack of materials), I'd be happy to lend my suggestions to someone more capable.
Also, I'd like to offer my services as a judge (actually, I already have. Many times.) I'm well versed in AMV etiquette, and can be honest yet tactful with my opinions.

what about this whole transitions argument? i think because we are doing something new, we can take the idea of the tv changing, chennel surfing idea, and make it our own with a slightly different transition... i was thinking if we stick with the FSB title, we can do something like star wars dvd footage with a coumputer, display, or something we can manipulate to show static...

Here's what makes an effective transition. It has to be so short and unnoticable that you forget its there after awhile. Like many things less is more and thats what made the TV channel surf effective, you didn't notice it. If you make the effect to big with too much stuff going on its going to be difficult to fully concentrate on the amvs. So I think either we keep it the same, or come up with something new yet equally minimalistic.

minimalistic is good...what about a cursor searching an actual screenshot of the forum and double clicking a thread bringing it up and the new vid comes up...fast, easy, and true to the title? (brainstorming ;D ) what yall got?

I was thinking, instead of a tv in between every clip use a scene clip board
like this:
http://mogosoaia.manastur.net/img/movie_scene_clipboard_adi.gif
and where it has the scene area on the board, have the clip number like #17 for clip number 17 or somethin
Wouldn't having them listed out like that take away from the spontinaity?

Wow, I come back from work and see four extra pages to catch up on! I'm so excited. So, lets see if I can't contribute a little more.
I'm all for having multiple judges. Of course, I accept the nomination. Matt_Colly, AMVP, and Inkwolf (who, hopefully, is still around) would be my three nominations.
I'm liking the ftp, aslo because yahoo limits my email to <5MB, which is no where NEAR big enough to send clips.
2dum2know: I know it's been said before, but anyone here would EXPECT me to have something clever to say, so here goes:
SHUT UP!
I'm not really feeling the R2D2 hologram, but that may be because I don't share the same vision. Put something together so we can all be on the same page, please.
We are still torn apart in the name issue. I could go off for at least six more pages over why we should keep the name, but for once, I feel i should spare you all my usual long-windedness, and say it as simply as I possibly can. If I wanted this project to be "Hell-esque", I would have opened the topic in the "Other Videos" board, where it would belong. I feel it belongs here, on the discussion of AMV Hell, because it should be the new AMV Hell.
Oh, boy! So much to do, so little time! Thanks to Matt for putting up a tentative timetable. This definately helps move things along. Let's give it the old Chako try! ;)

I was just about to nominate Inkwolf too. Having you and Matt is a pretty solid start and might be all you need because Zarx and ssg did it by themselves.
Just for the record, I am now officially siding with UNOwen on the name issue. If Zarx had a problem with it he'd say something by now, and if he does in the future we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I don't want to seem indelicate but that's how I feel now.

First off, I'd just like to say that I'm honored to be one of your nominations. I promise to do my best if I actually do make it.
As for the title, you've swayed me: the AMV Hell can stay. After all, didn't Zarxrax say in Hell 4 that AMV Hell would become a genre itself?

this nomination is for "chief editors" as you have so aptly named them and yes, you can vote for yourself...i did at one point i think ;D
AMV hell greats (that seem to not post anymore) can be nominated too, or nominated as "project mentors", like, people who are generally active on the boards can be nominated as editors while those we havent head from in a while can thus be contacted via pm or email about the project, specs, where we're at, and then see if they are up for lending a hand..
make sense? Everybody? questions, comments, concerns?
In that case, I'll stick with my previous choices. I just don't have the time or experience to be anything more than a contributing editor (oh, but I will contribute. Oh yes...).

That's true. I'll assume Matt's time zone. I'm going to assume it's around GMT -6:00. I'm on GMT -7:00 (US Mountain Standard Time) here, so synchronize watches people!
Oh, and I keep forgetting to go back to a particular issue. As far as encouraging variety with more obscure clips, it's not like we would use a clip just because it's obscure. It still has to be funny/clever and meet all other standards. I'm sure a few good clips got cut from AMV Hell Classics because they used an already too common anime/song (i.e. Deathnote, Lucky Star, Azumanga, etc.). I'm just saying we take it a step further and make it a point to make it known that this will happen more often. It's not going to STOP people from submitting another Azumanga clip. It just means that they better make sure it's damn good and ready to beat out 50+ other entries. Still, even if they use something like "Kaze no Stigma" doesn't guarentee it a spot. If we feel it's "Meh...", it ain't getting in!

It looks good, but would there be any way to incorporate this font/art style:

'm thinking two things here. Mimic the actual title and replace the "Star Wars" with "AMV Hell" or simply have AMV Hell above, like your logo, and simply replace your font with the actual. Let's see how those look! As far as recreating the "l337", don't worry to much about it and redo it as you see fit. We've spelled it at least five different ways between us so I don't think anyone will be too concerned if you decide to use an "S" instead of a "5" because it will fit better! If anyone can pull it off, I'm sure it is you!

i like the idea about competition amongst popular titles, such as azumanga, etc. So it sounds like the word is this, if you want to make an azumanga clip...make it AMAZING, beacuse it needs to stand out over the inevitable sea of others that will be submitted.

That's definitely the direction we should go. The AMV Hell around is awesome. We may need to spell out "F0RU|V|" a bit more (anyone have anymore variations on it?), as the spacing doesn't look like it will work otherwise. Can we see what it looks like with a couple of drips from the outer red? Not the whole thing, mind you. Just a couple on the bottom. I hate to be so damn picky, but I feel some minor improvement will help out a whole lot! Still, you've managed to capture the overall feel we are trying to achieve with this project! If this is any indication of what the future holds for us, I feel we will all have a grand time on this project!

Ink, i'm upset you won't take a bigger role, i think you'd do amazing work...anything i can do to convince you let me know.
Sorry, hon. :P I'm on dial-up, on a Mac, and on an OLD Mac. All three circumstances make it a chore for me to do anything with large files, and I usually have to download anything I want at work.
Besides, I only have iMovie, which is not a very precise editor.
Buying me a brand-new Mac with Final Cut Pro and Anime Studio Preo, and/or a prepaid fast internet connection would convince me.... ;D

wait! great idea! opening: various anime characters running, then a character running and lighting the olympic torch. as the flames rise, the camera pans up, and the words AMV HELL: TEH 4-UM 57R1K35 B4CK fade in.
A nice idea, but not exactly in keeping with the star wars theme. Still, it's open for consideration.

I have some sad news to report. AMV Hell: Season Two is a no go. This encompasses the project known as AMV Hell: Teh 4-um Str1k3s B4ck. Here is the behind the scenes banter that took place, just so everyone is on the same page:
UNOwen
FSB wants your blessing!
? Sent to: Zarxrax on: November 07, 2007, 01:15:11 PM ?
Zenpai,
We haven't received any feedback from you over your thoughts of our little project. Understand that it is not our intention to undermine you or any other editors. Understand that we do not wish to force AMV Hell away from you. We only want the chance to pick it up and see it though ourselves. We respect your decision not to continue making AMV Hell, but, rather than let something so big die, we would like you to pass the torch, so to speak. You must understand we feel this to be a better solution to simply creating thread after thread bugging you to create another one.
I understand if you wish to sit back and see where we are going before you decide how you feel about our project overall. All I'm asking is that you, at the very least, voice that you are willing to give us a chance by stickying our creation thread. We are perfectly willing to allow you to monitor our progress, if you wish to make sure we continue to do the series justice, and to explain ourselves over any objections you may have. Any pointers, suggestions, contributions, etc. will be graciously accepted as well Tongue!
We hope to have some sort of response from you soon, even if it is only a silent sticky. I know some of the other editors are uneasy about how we should move forward, and even such a simple gesture would settle any fears that you utterly disapprove. If you don't like the idea of us taking AMV Hell in our own hands, then please let us know as soon as possible, so that we can make any necessary changes before we get too carried away. A copy of this message has been sent to Matt_Colly, who is the other spearhead in this project.
Thank you very much, and we await your response, no matter witch way it happens to go!
Zarxrax
I haven't read the post about the project yet (not even sure which post it is actually, it seems a lot of people want to start up stuff), but here is my standard stance on such things: I have no problem with people making videos, though I wish they don't use "amv hell" in their title, so as to not confuse people into thinking they are official entries in the amv hell series.
U. N. Owen
Zenpai,
That's what we wish to do, though. You cannot/will not continue the official AMV Hell series and we do not wish to see it die. What would be so wrong about letting us take over in this situation? It is our wish to create project AMV Hell: Season Two. We want to work with you as much as possible as well, but are prepared to take the whole thing if we have to. We last thing we want is to confuse people into thinking it's an official AMV Hell. We want it to be an official AMV Hell. We understand we will never be able to perfectly recreate what you do. This is why we want it to be seen as "Season Two", to both allow the official series to live on, but also to allow us to take it into the direction it would need to go. We would like that opportunity. Rather, we would like YOU to give us that opportunity.
I know you must be tired of all the "Hell-esque" MEP projects, half of which will be sub-par, spouting up with the announcement of your decision to no longer make AMV Hell. That's not what we are about. What sets the group behind AMV Hell: Season Two is that we will do everything here. No third-party site, no one pretending to be you, no one taking more credit than they deserve. Give US the chance to be the new face of AMV Hell. It would mean the world to all of us, and not just to those involved.
I respond because I want you to understand what we are about. You can read our discussion towards the end of "Is AMV Hell 4 the last project" thread, though I should have figured you had grown weary of reading it a looooooong time ago.
Zarxrax
AMV Hell is done. AMV Hell 4: The Last One.
I believe that it's better to go out on a high note than to drag on forever until something becomes so bad that the once-fans have lost all interest. I also can not give my blessing/approval to such a project that I am not personally overseeing, as I can not personally assure that it would meet standards that many hold to this series. I hope this is understandable.
AMV Hell is not some godly being that can never be surpassed. When the first one came out, it did not have a legion of fans awaiting its release. People just happened to see it, and they liked it, and wanted more. This is really all it takes. A good video will survive on its merits, not its name.
UNOwen
Zenpai,
I guess I've done all I can. Although I regret your decision, I must accept it. It saddens my that you would rather let the torch be snuffed, than to pass it. At least, I will still have the chance to create something to rival AMV Hell. It looks like we'll have to think of something else to keep from being "just another MEP project". We shall be moving our project board elsewhere, then. We do hope we can work with you at least somewhat (maybe a submission?). Thank you for hearing us out. And, thank you for AMV Hell.
U. N. Owen out.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE END OF TEH 4-UM STR1K3S B4CK
All this means is that we strip the AMV Hell out of our name, and find a new page. It is now solely our project. We will not just be another MEP. We will create a wonderfully hilarious series of our own! Someday, we will have to sort through thousands and thousands of entries! Someday, people will camp OUR boards for the next installment! Someday, we will pass on our project to the next group of eager creators. Let's give it our all gang! It was a nice idea, but now we have to make our own mark!
Now that we clearly know our destination, let's set sail with all haste! Let's get our own site and get this thing really rolling!

well, actually,
when i make AMVs, I like to relay the story. Therefore, when I made my first AMV about Kimimaro, I couldn't possibly get all of the story. Therefore, I made two AMVs. When viewed together, they tell the story of the fight between Gaara and Kimimaro. Thus, I combine them into one long video. Of course, they can also be viewed individually...

So, role of Master Editors goes to: UNOwen, Matt_Colly, and Corpsegoddess/Issitheus.
Technically, Issitheus only received one vote (from himself three times), but I gotta respect guts. Preference, however, for the final M.editor will go to Corpsegoddess. Any objections will have to be voiced before the 15th. In the meantime, Matt will be informing Corpsegoddess of her honor. Hopefully, she will decide to help us. Remember, submissions will be taken from anyone with a video. Good luck to you all! Onward, to victory!!!!
