It all depends on a person's preference. But in my opinion, the one that sucked the most was the Karin dub. The person they chose to do Karin's voice had the most annoying voice I have ever heard.

I've only ever heard the english dub on television, so I couldn't really tell you.
In fact, Just about every mainstream anime I watch has done a pretty decent job with dubbing. There is one, however: Tenchi Universe had to have the worst english dub I've ever heard.

I have two.

1. One Piece *shivers*. Than again, this is 4kids wer're talking about here! A good series that was butchered by the bastards.

2. AzuDai wasn't as bad as One Piece in English, but it still felt a little wrong. Chiyo was too... cute and a few of the other voices barely sounded like the Japanese characters.

I've only watched inuyasha, yu yu hakusho and fullmetal alchemist dubbed and I think it was good. But I watched the 4kids dub of One Piece on youtube, and I regret that I got my headset infected by that crap. The worst thing I've heard, AND seen!

I disagree. Asuka sounds like she's no more than 10 years old in the Japanese version, and the fact that Shinji was voiced by a woman is fairly obvious at times. However, I thought both versions of Gendo and Rei were phenominal. Also, expecting the English counterparts to sound precisely like the Japanese version is asking a bit much, in my opinion.

Anyway, the first few episodes of Elfen Lied were very poorly done in both the Japanese and English version, if you ask me. Also, the English version of Burst Angel (or at least the first two episodes) were downright horrible. Hopefully, when I bring myself back to watching that, it'll get better.

The only problem I really have with English dubs is that, after a while, you start to recognize certain voice-actors' voices in different series. The most obvious one I can think of is Melissa Mao from FMP! and Misato Katsuragi from NGE. Another example would be Kaname Chidori from FMP! and Yukari-sensei from AzuDai. A more amusing (and subtle) example is how the guy who played Shinji Ikari also played Gojyou Shiouji (the ****phile doctor) from Excel Saga. However, there are some instances where this is broken. Example: The guy who voiced Alucard in Hellsing also did Hideki Motosuwa in Chobits. I still have trouble believing this.

At any rate, I don't really have a problem with English dubs, as I tend not to ever watch anime in Japanese unless I really have to. My argument is that, if I wanted to read, I'd buy manga. I watch anime to watch. I guess this habit comes out of how the first anime I got into were mech-anime, where actually seeing everything happen on-screen is the point of watching it.

well, I figure watching something created in its original language is better then 'americanizing' it, I don't mind reading the subs, but it can get to be a bit much when the subs also translate backround conversations.... whole paragraphs. it gets difficult trying to find out exactly what the charcters are saying...

I liked the osaka voice in Daioh, conveyed ger slowness and dreamlike state... As for Eva, my diggest gripe was , as you said Shinji's voice, it makes him sound more like a wimp then he does in the japanese version. i also CANNOT STAND Toji's and that dumb kid that follows him around's amrican dub voice: Toji just sounds outright stupid, and the other voice makes me want to rip my ears off...

I think I like watching without dubs better because to me, thats how the characters were supposed to REALLY sound. The exception to this is Chobits, the guy who did Hideki was DAMN good. I found it more enjoyable then the subbed version...

I agree with you that Americanization is teh suck, but I when I think Americanization, I think of someone taking the 4Kids axe to a series, not so much simply translating and dubbing it.

As far as Shinji's voice is concerned, he's supposed to be a spineless, depressed, 14-year-old boy; these kinds of kids don't tend to have very cool, bas-ass voices. While I agree that his voice can be a bit annoying at times, I think it fits better than if he sounded like, say, Alucard.

Toji didn't get enough screen-time for me to really care about how he sounded, and given that Kensuke is a complete nerd, I think his voice fits him very well.

I guess I look at characters' voices with a "not what's right, but what works" attitude. I can deal with someone having a slightly annoying or stupid-sounding voice, if it fits their character.

Hm I never liked the dub for Chobits. Chi's voice was more annoying when spoken in my language.
As for the worst dub ever? Try not to judge me for knowing this, but the worst dub of all time is Bible Black Gaiden, also known as one the most popular and nastiest hentias ever made. The dub for this thing is legendary. It turns this perverse satanic garbage into a macabre comedy.

Anyways, I know Shinji was supposed to sound spineless, but he sounded less spineless and more likeable in the Japenese version. In the American version he sounds too wimpy.

I would agree that while Toji didn't really get alot of screentime, he still deserves a voice better then the crap they gave him. I was watching on Youtube, and as soon as I heard that voice, and the voice of the nerd, I stopped the movie, unplugged my speakers and restarted my computer to rid it of the stupid contamination. When a Voice is THAT BAD, you need to find someone else to do the part... who chooses these people???

I kinda agree, Chi DID sound a little annoying at times, but only when she repeated her name when say... she was walking down a flight of stairs... unneccesary moments like those.

I think the idea was to establish a similar connection between the Japanese associations with Osaka (the city) and the American associations with the south (prehaps some sort of equivilancy?). Personally, and I say this as a southerner myself, I liked it.

(And that, children, is why we have fansubs.)

For me, it would definitely have to be Naruto. In japanese, it&#39;s not too bad for the most part. In english, however, it&#39;s the worst voice acting I&#39;ve ever heard. Almost all of the characters sound like they&#39;re done by the same person. (to me, anyways).

I couldn&#39;t find a subbed version of the spring special online, it was awful. They broke the 4th wall several times in it which was never done in the original version of the series, I still haven&#39;t seen a subbed version so I don&#39;t know if it&#39;s in the original.

Fandubs, by definition, aren&#39;t professional, and thus aren&#39;t going to sound good.

However, in the defense of ADV Film, y&#39;all know as well as I do that if they gave a white character a "Gansta" accent, Black People (or "African-Americans, so as not to offend anybody) all over the country would claim racism, just because she ain&#39;t black with the base of "They&#39;re stereotyping us! They?re saying we?re all stupid!? or some other bull $h!t. And knowing the America of today, they would win! ADV probably gave her the ?Southern Draw? to avoid a bunch of headaches and/or lawsuits.

The thing about the English voice of Mikuru Asahina is that it sounds almost the same as the Japanese, which in both circumstances sounds too high-pitched and girly to be believable.

The Southern drawl is used because she is from Osaka where people speak in a different dialect, the way that this is pulled off for the English dubs is usually by using a southern accent like with both Osaka as well as Kitsune from Love Hina. Although it&#39;s not really the best choice I guess it&#39;s just how they decided to portray a different Japanese accent.

Anyway, I agree that there&#39;s some dubwork out there that could be better (the first few episodes of Elfen Lied weren&#39;t all that great, and all of Gundam Wing should be reworked) but that&#39;s not my point. My point is that it&#39;s pretty damn hard to make a character sound like he has the same voice in two different languages, and I&#39;m personally grateful that dubbing companies don&#39;t bend over backwards trying to achieve this, as it&#39;s borderline absurd to attempt it.

The only real beef I&#39;ve ever had with English dubwork is that there&#39;s not many people who actually work to dub anime, and thus you have a lot of characters in the English dub landscape who sound the same. For example: Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya was voiced by the same guy who did Hideki Motosuwa from Chobits, and you can tell straightaway if you&#39;ve seen one of the series and then watch the other. However, the English Kyon doesn&#39;t really sound much like the Japanese Kyon, but I don&#39;t really have a problem with it. The Japanese Kyon didn&#39;t really sound like a high schooler, if you ask me; the English Kyon sounded something a bit closer.

I never said the same effect didn&#39;t happen in American films. My point was that it&#39;s more noticeable in English-voiced anime because, let&#39;s face it, there&#39;s a lot less people dubbing anime than there are Hollywood actors. And I didn&#39;t mean to imply that I have a huge problem with it. It&#39;s the only issue I&#39;ve ever had against English dubwork in anime, and it&#39;s a small one that&#39;s easy to overcome after a few episodes of whatever I&#39;m watching.

And hell, there are some actors I can&#39;t watch or take seriously because I saw them in a certain role. After I saw Fight Club, I couldn&#39;t look at Helena Bonham Carter as anyone other than Marla Singer. Russell Crowe will always be Maximus from Gladiator, in my eyes. In the anime world, I had a hard time taking Akito Tenkawa seriously after having watched NGE; Spike Spencer voiced both Tenkawa from Martain Successor and Shinji Ikari from NGE.

Actually, the subs or dubs choice rarely crosses my mind unless I&#39;ve heard that the dubs are far above average (see Cowboy Bebob, Hellsing, or FMA). If it&#39;s below the threshold of "Obscenely Popular" in Japan, they don&#39;t bother getting anyone good for the dubs. I swear, they could double their marketability if they got mainstream Hollywood actors to do anime dubing like they do for Miyazaki films.

I don&#39;t think anyone&#39;s THAT crazy... but I guess I agree: this thread has merit again because it&#39;s been dead for so long.

To add to the list, the original version of Nuasicaa was atrocious. They chopped out huge sections of it, deleted much of the environmental message, and even changed the title. Worst of all, Nausicaa was no longer even the main character. I don&#39;t think there has ever been a worse butchering of an anime, including 4Kids.

DAMN, 0:30 scared the hell out of me. I barely heard the voice of the person who was talking so I turned up the volume high as hell...whoa

Anyway, I&#39;ve always hated dubs, and the way they butchered One piece is so just wrong...and hilarious at the same time

I mean, why would they remove the pole where Zora was tied up against.... Just because it looks like a CROSS?!! ... yeah.. -.- necessary .. And Nami&#39;s weapon, it was a cross but now just a stick .... And Luffy was in pain when he had to pull of a sucky stick think of his arm... I don&#39;t even know what its called. -.- 4:37min in the second movie I posted.

I agree with the last quote. Most of the dubs are bad. But I like Dragonball/Z and GT, for example. And One Piece is really bad, but my post just got skipped ...

If it&#39;s below the threshold of "Obscenely Popular" in Japan, they don&#39;t bother getting anyone good for the dubs. I swear, they could double their marketability if they got mainstream Hollywood actors to do anime dubing like they do for Miyazaki films.

I don&#39;t really hate dubs - some of them I found to be pretty good. But many are just really sub par and are ruining the greatness of the show.Anyway, I do prefer watching anime with original sound and QUALITY subtitles, as opposed to ****ty speed-subs. I&#39;ve seen subs so bad, that even I could tell the translation was wrong, and I know only a couple japanese words...
So, to summarize: good subs and good dubs (unless I&#39;ve seen the original first - then the dub makes everything sound out of place) should be praised when praise be deserved, but ****ty dubbers and ****ty subbers should burn in hell.

I would have to say that the Naruto and Bleach dubs just... No. Just no. They both fail in my book, and the Elfen Lied anime is nothing like the manga. What&#39;s up with that. I&#39;ve heard of making animes longer than mangas, but never shorter than mangas. What the hell!?

(And that, children, is why we have fansubs.)

Technically they;re not subtitles for the Japanese language track, they&#39;re captions for the English language track. The captions say what the English dub says, not what the Japanese audio translates to. In some respects, it&#39;s just as bad as the dub.

But subs are FAR better with just about any anime. Haruhi was great, but they dubbed over the songs in episode 12, which I hated.
