Well, there wouldn't be a show without the main character, but they could've made a better main character.

I don't hate Shinji. A lot of the events in Eva would be soul crushing for anyone, let alone a manic depressive 14 year old with a father like Gendo.

Yes, I agree they could have made a much better main character... and as for the second reply, I would love being Gendo, I would make it one of my primary jobs to surprise shinji like he did in the levator scene and give him one of those pissed off, irritated looks, scaring him to take the long route into the GeoFront.

I don't remember where I heard/read this, but as I recall Anno wanted to tie in his own personal experience struggling with emotional problems, so Shinji was predestined to be the way he was to some extent. Besides, would the show really have been interesting if the characters were all balanced and put together? I think not.

Oh I completely agree. The last thing the world needs is more ecchi (or at least, more ecchi with mentally unstable characters).
