I'm looking for something new to watch. I would greatly appreciate any assistance this community is willing to provide.

Preferably violent, bonus points if it's based in open warfare. I strongly prefer ww2+.
Preferably recently, I am rather picky when it comes to animation/image quality.
Preferably well designed and explored characters.
Preferably some sort of deep conflict/mind****ery.
In lieu of the above, it would simply have to be dark, and cute/playful, in a way that zombie loan was (only not as bad as zombie loan). I've already seen soul eater, and I liked it, but that's probably as far into the 'band of super heroes' (bleach, naruto, dragon ball, those kinds of things.) genre. ttgl was good though.

List of things I've watched that I found to be on similar flavor to the taste I seek.

Highschool of the dead, black lagoon, pumpkin scissors, sky crawlers, kenran butohsai, angel beats (to a degree), full metal panic, full metal alchemist, ghost in the shell, mardock scramble, darker than black.

Well while not recent or with deep image quality Berserk is ungodly violent, with well explored and designed characters, with a good, deep conflict, and a kicker in the end which just wow. However it does end abruptly on a moment of a manga, which it shouldn't have ended on.
The Manga is far superior in all of the above you mentioned, as the quality of the art in the Manga is one of the best I've ever seen. (and it is currently ongoing and explores much deeper in the conflict and the eternal struggles of the characters) not only that it's one of the best Manga I have ever read.

I'm not really into manga, the only one I've read is the first 2 books of biomega because they were a gift. Maybe it was just that particular manga, but it just wasn't enjoyable. the pictures were nice and the setting/characters were cool, but I just couldn't get into it like I would an anime.

What stops me from getting into the anime of berzerk is it's age and setting, which is terrible of me to admit. I am much less into fantasy/mid-evil settings.

(I should also add trigun and cowboy bebop to the above list, I was just reminded of them somehow).

Oddly enough...I recommend Strike Witches

I tried to watch strike witches. I honestly tried. I could not bear to watch the first episode, it was simply too frustrating. I don't remember exactly what it was that frustrated me, but it was enough to turn me off from it completely. Which is a bit of a shame, because the basis of the show had moderate potential (animal ears, girls, weaponry).

Strike Witches creeped me out. I could not finish the first episode.

Also, suggest you watch "Baccano!" It's got great action, awesome characters and is very, VERY well dubbed (Way better than the sub). To top it off it's well animated.

Hmm, Higurashi or Elfen Leid perhaps? Not really sure, as you've exhausted my repertoire of Dark/bloody/new/deep anime.

I'll just recommend Shiki if you want something really bloody (That is, towards the end), but the characters have weird hair styles

Hmm, Higurashi or Elfen Lied perhaps?

Would second these. Other possibles off the top of my head:

Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade
High School of the Dead

Have to do some research to suggest more.

I've seen jin roh (I made the comment in the demotivational posters thread about the snowman first), most of higurashi, I don't remember where I left off but it was after that goddess thing joined up with them. I've also seen elfen leid, and madoka magica.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I'll give strike witches another try, also baccano, shiki and fate/stay night.

Mobile Suit Gundam. It's rather openly based on WW2. For even more violence: Victory Gundam.

Preferably recently, I am rather picky when it comes to animation/image quality.

All Gundam series are pretty well drawn.

Preferably well designed and explored characters.

The main reason girls like Gundam: good characters. (Or so they say, maybe they just like watching stuff blow up.)

Preferably some sort of deep conflict/mind****ery.

Gundam again - or EVA, Code Geass. (Code Geass is like if Gundam got really drunk and believed itself to be Napoleon.)

Other things possible: Ergo Proxy, Cowboy bebop.
