Something really weird happened to the site the other day, and I still don't know whats up with it. Everything on my end finally appears to be working right, but looking in the error log, I see some weird stuff is still going on.

If you encounter any errors on the site, please let me know, and what you were trying to do when it happened.

I have multiple signatures which I want to switch between in the sig spot.
I know it can be done by refering to your uploaded PHP file on a webhost, which switches between them.

I tried the same, but either the webhosts didn't allow PHP, or they were restricted.

Now I found another solution to switch between sigs. I got a HTML code which does the same:

Hmm. I guess so, but it is possible to embed PHP as image.

Then I should just make a GIF image from them. But my sigs are PNG now, transparent on top. But when I make a GIF, the transparancy isn&#39;t there anymore. At least not all. So I think I have to make the background white.

I will briefly mention the problem with searching that I've had since.. oooh, at the very least since after the site upgrade and layout change.

I receive Internal server errors if I search for a term which will bring up a post that has already been deleted/'lost' (or is possibly 'incomparable'?).
^Has anyone else ever experienced this issue?^

[ Example ]
Search for "higurashi", and it will result in an Internal Server error.
Now, restrict the dates to 0..281, and now it will complete successfully.
Make that 282, and that range should include my post, which seems to have 'disappeared' with it's parent thread.

I have experienced several queries in the past which cause this issue, I'll see if I can remember them.

I am not sure if the thread in the example above was deleted, or if the thread disappeared (or was disabled) after a certain amount of inactivity, but it is not currently accessible. It could also be an issue with the search results display/processing of the older (or some odd) posts. Though, I'm not sure if it shares code with the rest of the board, which could make that irrelevant.

I'm afraid that the 'simple'/'less technical' fix might be to purge some of the conflicting posts. However, I hesitate to bring up this issue because these old posts are still available in users individual post history, which is how I'd prefer them to stay, unless they were manually deleted for violations. I could be wrong though, or one might be able to fix the SQL query, or the php that deals with the results so that it disregards any conflicting posts.

I can attempt to help provide examples and details if any are needed.
Also, if it is determined that those deleted/old/lost entries must be purged from the database, I'd prefer to know before they were. (Yeah, I apologize for being somewhat selfish, but if it is possible, an advanced warning might be appreciated. Though, I may only have one post that causes that anyway. :-\)

Ah, so unless something has changed recently, there seems to be little relation to removed posts.

I now see that the case I mentioned in my first post does not always reproduce the error (at least not today). It may very well be due to server load. After a bit of poking around, that's about all I could verify from my side.

No worries, there's no rush to have it fixed. As long as users can still post there really isn't much of a problem.

i dont know about everyone else...but i get it when i post in one thread, then try to post in the "count to a million" thread....and that thread doesnt involve alot of thinking...just a little when you or someone else purposely messes up the count....usually you :P

While it might not 'prevent' spam in the long run, it does help prevent us (or spamers) from hammering the site too much. I'm not sure of what the server is capable of, but if too many users are posting in very short time intervals, it might slow things down for everyone (both browsing and posting). In comparison to serving pages, it may not be too much, but frequently syncing writes is bound to 'cost' more then reads. (Though, use of the search function probably creates more of a load then any current posting traffic does.)

(Side note: This is all a 'not so short' and less organized, but semi friendly response. So, while it's not a quick read, it's not too blunt and unsupported. ::) )

The limit also helps prevent the server from going down when indeed spamm3rs DO start hammering the site. I believe at that point we'd want to be able to PM and contact each other, contact our mod, or just to bitch about the situation. >:D
Believe me, it could become very painful if that limit was too low. -- Spammers could not only slow our connection down, but also fill up the database, and create all sorts of problems. If too much damage can be done, the results might even mean that it would be too much trouble to recover all the older (and very likely the more recent) post histories/statistics. :|

Of course, I'm not one to post as quickly as most. However, if I was browsing with only one tab, or even if I were not.. I'd imagine the amount of time it takes to find and load a page, read the response, and type up a post wouldn't be too far from 10 sec. (This discounts having short conversations, which might be better off in the chatter box? :P I wonder what the limit on that is... And yes, I understand there's a difference.)

While it is indeed amusing :P; might I also suggest that we try to make sure each post has something to do with Site Errors, and preferably contributes with something productive. That way Zarxrax can more easily (and with less reasons not to ::)) find and fix things we may need help with. ^_^;
(This isn't so much a "you're doing it wrong" as it is a, "oops, don't get too distracted", especially because I have the tendency to do that myself ::))

After all the voting is completed over the next couple of weeks, I'm considering moving the site over to something different, like phpbb3.

I believe all of the site downtime may have been being caused by the search function. I have done some things to help improve performance in this area (built search index, limited maximum search results to 1200, don't allow guests to search), so here's hoping that the problems will go away now.

The PM function doesn't seem to be working for me.
After I press "send message" nothin seems to happen, the page just refreshes itself or something.
I tried checking the "save to outbox" box, and pressed send message, but nothing was saved to the outbox
.

EDIT: Nevermind, seems to be working fine now. =)

i have a valid complaint it may be due to the fact that i have IE 8 but when i am posting long posts (as i have done on occasion ) when i get past the point of the text box (meaning the scroll feature comes into play) my field of view inside the box tends to shif a lot and extra spaces are added when i hit enter

could you maybe look into this or explain why this is happening
