True that. Production was down signifigantly in '07, partly because one of the major studios (Geneon) up and closed their animation studio. All the series they were working on (including Karin/Chibi Vampire) are still in Limbo as far as I know.

Death Note was put on a licensed site right away. It was mentioned in an article I read about copyright violations and piracy in the anime/manga industry. The thing that made DN special was how fast it was put on a site for legitimate online sale. You could actually buy the dubbed version before it was on Cartoon Network.

Ooh and also there are no anime channels here in Finland. You either have to pay alot to see them =/ also about fansubbing, where else are we, the non-japanese people supposed to know if we like a anime or not. The japanese have the possibility to watch it of tv, and then buy the dvd's. We get the dvd's atleast a year late here, with no idea is the anime good, unless we have watched it by downloading. If i think the show is good and it gets licensed i buy it.

Bodyguards are several pages gone and the talk went from Azumanga to accessing anime.
Talking about accessing anime, this was posted on a danish forum not long ago. My translation.
Studio Gonzo has announced that their two most recent series, "The Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk" and "Blassreiter" will be streamed online, internationally and subbed in English, the same day as the are aired in Japan.
It will be YouTube, CrunchyRoll og BOST that will do the streaming, which will be free, though all three services are permitted to require payment for higher quality versions.
As far as I've heard, BOST has the best quality.
It is not only fansubbers that has dreamt of this, but all animefans, so one can only hope, that it goes well and not only makes Gonzo continue, but also get the other large companies onto the idea, with both new and older titles.
Druaga will start 4. april og Blassreiter 5. april. meaning the first episodes are out now
Gonzo has taken this rather remarkable initiative to go against the widespread fansubbing. So it will be interesting to see, if the series will still appear as fansubs.

Well, simply attacking it won't do anything. They have to do something that will convince people that it's a better idea to pay or do something that generates revenue than go for the fansubs. I still go for the higher quality when it's an affordable choice, so they (like Netflix) have the possibility of catching me.

I'm just hoping the anime industry doesn't go the route of the 1990s RIAA. If the next few waves of less abrasive measures fail then things might start going down that road.

anyone know how TV shows make money, or how they track how many people are watching for ratings?
As far as I know...in the US, anyway...
I believe the network buys/leases series from the studio. The studio has to sell the concept to a network with a pilot episode or so before they can risk putting money into actually creating the show. Or, in other cases (like for programs advertising games or toys) a studio may actually be hired to create the show.
Then the TV station makes money with advertising. The more people watch the show, the more the network can charge the sponsors for ad time.
The studio can profit again if the show's reruns are bought for syndication or re-showing, and again by sales of video.
The only thing I know about tracking is the Neilsens. Members of the Neilsen family all have a tracking box where they report what they are watching. This is supposed to give an overview of what America in general is watching. Don;t know how tracking is done apart from that...

Alright, I did a bit of googling, and $4 a gallon converts to .68 Euros a liter. Which makes sense considering the Euro=>Dollar exchange rate is just over 1.5 now. Also, the U.S. produces a lot of oil, we just consume more than we produce. Most of western Europe produces basically none, and so has to buy it all from Russia and Africa. So no matter how much we bitch and moan, the U.S. will probably continue to have lower prices.

Add thereto, that gasoline is subject to cosierable taxation in many European countries.
The U.S. has a gas tax too, it just isn't as large. We are behind on environmental initiatives after all.

nice
although oil realy isn't the problem in the gold ol' u s of a its the refining of it into gasoline
we haven't built a refinery in over 2 decades if we did it would be a whole hell of a lot cheaper
and enviromental intiatives be damned they have killed off nuclear power in the US
