Well, I think most of us can agree that Zarx doesn't post nearly enough for being the proprietor of the website and all. But of course, that's like saying that a candy store manager is obliged to eat lots of candy, which isn't necessarily true.
I'm sure he's got other, more important things in life to be taking care of right now...No, but seriously, what has been taking up your time recently? If you don't mind my asking, of course.

That is true in english-speaking parts of the world, especially in America because this kind of obsession isn't seen as dangerous or even (in most cases) all that distasteful. The difference lies in the Japanese origin, where otaku is actually a derogatory term. This is because the mindset it implies (obsession) is truly distasteful and actually morally disgusting in Japan. On top of it, the aversion the otaku lifestyle makes other people feel towards them has led to a particularly high rate of suicide among otaku in Japan, a country with a high suicide rate to start with. In fact, in Japan there are programs designed to make kids avoid this lifestyle because of it's possible consequences. NOW you see why I said "dangerous" at the beggining.
This all comes from news reports, some stuff gleaned from Wiki, and my Japanese friend Satori.

There's one thing you have to take into account: the quality of life and the level of development in Lithunia (and almost all the other countries in the top 10) are very low. In fact, there are only two countries in the top ten who are NOT in bad situations: South Korea and Japan. Now despite their mutual dislike of each other, the two countries are very similar. The important factor in this case is the tradition of death by suicide when faced with dishonor. THIS is what puts these two very well-developed countries in the top ten along with places like Hungary and Kazakhstan.

Please let me disagree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index find Japan in number 9, Lithuania is just to the right on the other column in 43rd i think. That is way of a difference i agree, but then again... find Belarus (2nd suicide or Russia 3rd) theyre somewhere in the 90's... so i guess while the quality is not as high as Japan's there is some OTHER reason that just the low quality of life. You mention the tradition to commit suicide upon dishonor. I'm going to give you a TRUE story of Lithuanian history. Read it it's a bonus and will help you understand.
There stood a castle called Pil?nai on the banks of the river Nemunas. In the year 1336 February 25 th (february 25th is my birthday btw) The castle was stormed by the German cursader ordin (Lithuania still was pagan back then) in an attempt to take it and gain a foothold in the area. After a long battle the people in the castle saw they were outnumbered and doomed to defeat, they decided to BURN THE CASTLE and themselves with it, so as the enemy would not get anything. They made a huge bonfire, and the women at their own will burned themselves with their children alive rather than be captured by the germans. The men tuck their swords in them and killed themselves, after an hour or so only the ruler of the castle, Duke Margiris was left standing alone. He was about to pierce his heart after ending his wife and kids into the last journey but at the moment the germans breached the gates and flooded into the courtyard. After seing what happened they immediately tried to capture Margiris. He then fought off those who were to come near him with such fury that the pious warriors started shouting "It's the devil himself" after a few more lay dead, Margiris' sword broke and he was left with nothing. Then the Grand Marshall of the ordin came to him with an offer to surrender. Margiris took out his dagger and stabbed the marshall to death in front of his warriors. After doing so he took the same dagger, yelled to his ancestors and stuck it into his heart. So he still took his OWN life after fighting so long. This is true, it has been chronicled by the crusaders, since they lost their marshall in the battle. That should give you a better insight into the mentality of Lithuanians.

Yes, of COURSE I read it. It's fun to have discussions like these. You seem to have a very good point. In fact, that is probably about half the reason they have the highest suicide rate in the world. See, if you think of the Lithuanian mentality as similar to the Japanese and South Korea and then you add it's moderate development index, it explains why it's suicide rate is almost TWICE that of Japan.
Also, another thought: Belarus is second place worldwide with 35 deaths per 100,000. It's also adjacent to Lithuania. Do they have similar cultures?

They are both slavic nations, so in a sense yes. But Belarus resembles Russia more than Lithuania IMHO. The reason for the high suicide rate in Belarus might be the communist regime and the poverty, but I'm not sure.

and to answer your question yes, up until the 18th century Belarus was a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (ever since the 11th century) so in 7 centuries the culture did become quite similar in Belarus, but probably mr Lukashenko is causing the better half of those suicides IMO

DIE DaMetzger! I know you probably do not know but Lithuania IS NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE A SLAVIC NATION! we ar BALTIC (along with Latvia) The only two nations which are BALTIC. We may be surrounded by slavs but we are BALTIC! And yes i know that is hard to know but things like that make my blood boild since slavs have always been not-that-good neighbours.
Oh ****, I really screwed up that one. I knew something was wrong when I wrote that... Simply forgot. Sorry.
And who do you mean with slavs being not so good neighbours? The union between Poland and Lithuania lasted a couple hundred years and survived numerous wars with the likes of Russia and Germany (isn't it just lovely being between the two? :P ), so it couldn't have been that bad with us. Then again, both countries got torn apart by Russia, Austria and Prussia, so the whole thing didn't really end well. Funny thing is the Polish blame the Lithuanians and vice versa. I think both are to blame to some degree.
And then there's still the case of Poland taking Vilnus shortly after the first world war. Lithuania keeps being angry about that and I can't blame them - it has always been their capital city. On the other hand most people living there at the time were polish...
1337uvis, can you explain it to me why Lithuanians don't like Poland so much? I have seen postcards showing the 3 greatest enemies of Lithuania - Russia, Germany and... Poland. What's up with that?
1337uvis
07-23-2008, 09:46 PM
actually the western/southern slavs there are no problems with them. the union with Poland worked out pretty good and there was never any feuding with the checs or anything. We just carry (for over 500 years now in total lol) a spite against the germanic nations and the eastern slavs (basically there's only one really BIG slav country to the east of Lithuania, if you can guess). Lithuanians were always good neighbours to the slavs, but they didn't reply in the same baiscally. in the 14th century, Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania led a military campaign into the lands of Russia against the invading mongols. After dealing with them he found himself at teh gates of Moscow. He in good grace KNOCKED on the gates and asked the people of Moscow if they surrender. They didn't and as a sign of good neighbourship (since he wasn't fighting the russians origianlly) he LEFT even though he was with a big army near the undefended gates. That is just on example, the other one is that after the battle of Grunwald, when Lithuanian-Polish troops defeated the crusaders in a major battle efectively ending their crusades, Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas Didysis (Th Great) repaid the slavs that were fighting for Lithuania by granting them absolute autonomy. Signs of friendship that weren't replied to during the divisions of Republic of Both Nations (Zcecpospolita in polish) when the Russian empire took 90% of the territory of Lithuania (other 10% went to Prussia) so yeah, we bear a grunt towards them a bit... historically. Slavs are good people, but they tend to choose the worst people for their government. For example Stalin wasn't even russian, he was georgian :o
Metzger - Poland took Vilnius in a coup that was inscenized by some general... argh forgot his name. If that was not enough in 1939 they sent an ultimatum requiring to reestablish diplomatic relations (which were, as of 1921, discontinued) being in a state wit two out of 5 major cities lost (Vilnius to Poland and Klaipeda to the third reich) the government was in no position to refuse... but that doesn't mean anyone liked it. This feeling of hostility is declining with every year now since Poland is becoming a closer partner in social and economical events.
Actually there is a story about the coup of Vilnius 1921. A polish general said to a Lithuanian general that the lithuanians of vilnius were hostile and he showed him a sign painted on the walls: "Brothers lithuanians, slaughter all the polish pigs!". The lithuanian general replied:
-Lithuanians didn't write this, you did.
-Why do you say that?
-No Lithuanian would write to another lithuanian in polish.
And yes, I studied history.
DaMetzger
07-23-2008, 10:19 PM
You don't have to explain in such detail to me - although I didn't study history like you I do tend to read a lot of historical books. I do believe history is crucial if you want to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again. People never seem to learn though. Oh, and it's Rzeczpospolita, not Zcecpospolita.
When it comes to the division of the Republic of Both Nations, the Russians weren't the only ones being ungrateful. In 1683 Jan III Sobieski, while leading the polish (a simplification) army saved Vienna (and, in effect, most of the german nations) from the Turkish, yet we still got torn into little pieces less than a hundred years later. I guess the Polish are just tu gullible when it comes to trusting their allies.
The general who "liberated" Vilnus was Lucjan Zeligowski. Still, the alternative - being under Russian rule - was equally bad or even worse IMO.
The year 1939 was a different story alltogether. Poland was in a pinch themselves and wanted to do everything possible to avoid war when being surrounded by enemies. The allies (Britain and France) didn't do **** to help Poland after the invasion of Germany on the 1st of September 1939 and then Russia on 17th September.
I have to agree with one thing - slavs do tend to pick the wrong people to be their rulers. And what I can tell about polish menatlity is that Poles can unite when facing a greater enemy and can kick almost anyone's ass, but when there's peace they tend to fight for power amongst themselves. Sad but true.
1337uvis
07-24-2008, 06:28 AM
Sad but true and Lithuanians have the same thing. Lithuania was teh 1st country to break from the soviet union (the USSR, not the Warsaw pact, since Lithuania didn't exist as an independant (or dependant in the communist party way) nation back then) and the russian army was withdrawn from Lithuania even BEFORE it was withdrawn from Germany. That is a lot of thanks to our President at the time Vytautas Landsbergis, he is now in Europe's Parliament. But after becoming independant once again, mix a bit of slavic "bad government choosing" and some.... again, slavic "vying for power" and you get an annual inflation of 12% at the moment
The time of 1939-09-01 to 12-01 (actually it should be even later but still) is called "Funny war" exactly of that reason: They declared war officialy on Germany but that was about it. They really were afraid, since back in 1938 they OK'd Germanys "acquisition" of the Sudets from czechoslovakia with the only reason "a lot of germans live there"
The Polish rule of Vilnius of course wasn't a vandal one, the city was preserved in perfection when lithuania regained it. But living there was only good for the polish, not the belarussians, the jews, lithuanians, but it was ok for everybody living there while in lithuanian rule, so that gives you a bit of idea as what of people were ruling th city. Ofcourse my story is from my point of view and i don't want to escalate a discussion based on my views rather than historical facts. Oh and about it being in Russian control - that was not what would have happened. Since Lithuanian and the USSR had signed a treaty of friendship (remember, it was the eraly 20s still) and Poland had not, at that time USSR was sort of an ally, so when they were fighting the polish and took Vilnius they handed it over to the lithuanians. Sadly, the lithuanian army failed to arrive in time and the city had been retaken by the poles.
Also, that was the same treaty they broke on 1941-06-14 when they sent an ultimatum requiring "the full use of Lithuanian territory for the needs of the Red Army" the Lithuanian parliament again was in no position to refuse, but in their response they did note that it broke the treaty, so it wasn't like "OK, go ahead". And what's the weirdest part, when the Red Army crossed the border (effectively occupying the coutnry without any fatalities - i think this was still a good decision, since there would have been a lot of Lithuanian fatalities and still we couldn't have stopped an army that was in the millions, and when i say no fatalities i don't speak of the guerrila campaign that lasted for 15 years after the occupation - and it is the reason why there are so little russian-speaking people in Lithuania...they were scared off)

But Otaku is most likely used to refer to anime/manga fans. I don't see it as something negative..
