Stop the E-Parasite Act!
https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/stop-e-parasite-act/SWBYXX55

Quoted from "avaaz.org"
Right now, the US Congress is debating a law that would give them the power to censor the world's internet -- creating a blacklist that could target YouTube, WikiLeaks and even groups like Avaaz!

Under the new law, the US could force internet providers to block any website on suspicion of violating copyright or trademark legislation, or even failing to sufficiently police their users' activities. And, because so much of the internet's hosts and hardware are located in the US, their blacklist would clamp down on the free web for all of us.

The vote could be in days but we can help stop this -- champions in Congress want to preserve free speech and tell us that an international outcry would strengthen their hand. Let’s urgently raise our voices from every corner of the world and build an unprecedented global petition calling on US decision makers to reject the bill and stop internet censorship. Sign the petition and then forward as widely as possible - our message will be delivered directly to key members of the US Congress ahead of the crucial vote.

SIGN HERE! (https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/stop-e-parasite-act/SWBYXX55)

Not from the USA? http://americancensorship.org/ is the link you need.

I signed it, I hate censorship of any kind.

P.S. My sign-up was epic.

*Sigh* I honestly think everyone is overreacting about this, but if we must...

Emailing your senator/representative will do nothing. Signing an e-petition will do less than nothing. Have you seen the response to previous petitions?

What you need to do is CALL THEIR ASSES (http://www.contactingthecongress.org/) (not now, obviously, it's almost midnight in DC and they're not going to be in) and have a real discussion with them.

**** this e petition ****, seriously.

Writing a letter would also be a smart thing to do, but I imagine it will take longer than calling them.

It's not like the internet takes the law seriously anyway...

Doesn't matter. If you have an understanding of how this law works, they'd have to if it were enacted.

This law gives the government the ability to block any domain name with allegedly copyright infringing content. i.e., if someone decided an episode of AMV Hell had some of their content in it, they would be able to take amvhell.com from Zarx (of course, 64.57.214.49 could still connect you to the website anyway. Unless godaddy would also have to shut down Zarx's account, which is a big possibility)

Then, they can force Paypal to close Zarx's account and force... whoever does the ads... to pull those as well.

This is clearly something we should care about in this community, but... oh my is it a little overblown.

EDIT that IP address is wrong. I must have fudged the whois lookup. Replace that IP in your mind with whatever the amvhell.com IP address is :P

I see...I still have trouble seeing this being straight out enforced - you know?

...how? You see **** get pulled on youtube all the time. Now imagine every time that happens a website gets shut down. That would be the result of this bill should it get passed.

And remember, it doesn't stop piracy. You can still go to the infringing websites, and they can't exactly stop advertisers from across the border, where most of these sites are hosted.

Yeah, but i also see **** stay up without them doing anything despite it being obvious they are aware of it. I just feel this law would be enforced in a pretty lax manner. Not to that serious of a degree.

That's because those companies realize it's good business to leave that **** up there. You're forgetting that government is a very blunt instrument. AMV Minis Season 1 Episode 8 was actually taken down for a little while. Sure, not everything gets blocked this way, but it does happen, and literally all this bill serves to do is to make the consequences of this worse. It won't even stop piracy or slow it down at all, I guarantee it.

Do you really think people are pushing this bill so hard because they want it to sit there and not do anything?

Nodman, if you want to sign an epetition that actually might do something, sign this one (https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/we-demand-vapid-condescending-meaningless-politically-safe-response-petition/gCZfn86x?i=0) or this one. Yeah, bring youtube down - piss off the internet...yeah, i'm not taking this law seriously at all. Maybe i'm naive, but we do have a legal system that let a coked up lindsy lohan out of jail after serving less than 5 hours off a what? Months sentence? I may be studying to be a lawyer, but i'm starting to realize just how much of a joke our laws are. I just want to be around front seat when the punch line happens...

They have shown they can be quite dangerous when something angers them. How do you troll the U.S. government though?

I've been hearing about this for a while. I don't actually think this law is backed by any major movie or music studio. It would honestly hurt their business if this was passed.

Geez, as a person who knows the U.S Bill of Rights (First ten amendments of the U.S Constitution), This bill is unconstitutional since it deprives us of freedom of the press (media), it is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S Constitution I think that most likely this bill will never become law.

Indeed. This is another reason why I don't think it'll get passed- and on the off chance it does, it'll be challenged very quickly.
