Just thought it would be fun to see how long everyone has been watching anime and reading manga.
(I don't count Pokemon and stuff like that I saw when I was little)
I started in 2005 when I got my first computer, and Internet (non dial-up).
Had been reading One Piece manga and discovered that it was being made inte an animated series, so I downloaded episode 212 and watched it. I loved it so I downloaded all episodes and started watching them from ep 1. At that time I was more into the shonen stuff like One Piece, Naruto and Bleach etc. Later I started watching other stuff, Onegai Teacher was the first romance anime I saw and got me hooked on the romance genre. Since then I've just continued watching all kinds of anime, and I still enjoy it as much as I did 3 years ago ^^ if not even more now.
Sooo....when did you start, and what was your first anime?
Edit: Added manga in the topic name. I got 4 first volumes of One Piece as a christmas gift 2004. I loved it, bought 24 more volumes until I discovered anime ;)

Well, it's interesting for you to put it that way.
See, I started with manga. And really, it's always been manga for me. The reason is simple: I've never watched TV and never had a cable connection in my house in my entire life. So throughout my childhood, I've read like it was going out of style. So when I found manga, the transition was easy.
My friend at karate gave me the first manga I ever read, King of Bandits Jing. I was taken by the art style (which even for manga is quite unique), but when he brought in Love Hina, it was all over. I bought the entire series, except for vols. 8-11 which my local library has. It was the first series I ever finished, and is still my favorite romantic comedy manga. To this date I have read it four times.
The anime thing... started when I joined the Anime Club at my high school in Freshman year. Soon after I joined, the leaders brought in AMV Hell 3 on a disk. More than any single thing, I think that watching AMV Hell 3 that one time in the club started me on the path I'm on now. Because as I watched it, it became my burning desire to get every single joke in the entire thing. That desire led me find and watch/read everything I can find in order to become a part of that (our) world completely.
GOD (or Satan, as the case may be) BLESS AMV HELL!

I think I've started watching anime back in 1999, when Dragonball was being shown on one of the polish tv channels. I watched all 3 series, and then had a longer break from anime. The reason for that was pretty simple - I had no internet connection at the time and there were literally none mangas or anime available to buy in Poland. Plus, I really didn't have any friends who had an interest in that kind of thing. But, years later, around 2002 I think, I got an internet connection and the world of japanese animation and art became finally easily available. The first series of normal lenght (and by normal I mean around 26eps, not 520 like DB or Naruto or other shonen shows) I've watched was Trigun - one of my all-time favorites. Trigun really sucked me into the world of anime and I've been addicted ever since.
A lot has changed on the polish manga/anime market since, and now you can buy many good translated mangas, both new and old. Same thing with anime. The amount of titles available is still pretty small when compared to the States though and they are mainly the mainstream ones (Naruto, Death Note etc.). Still, it is possible to find more ambitious titles from time to time (Paranoia Agent, anyone :P ), so I'm not complaining.

As a kid I'd always watch Salor Moon before school, I guess that doesn't count but I got into both anime and manga in 6th grade where I'd watch adult swim's anime (they had Inuyasha, cowboy bebop and yu yu hakusho at that time) my friends often traded around manga and I managed to read love Hina, about 2 weeks later I started buying and I got Chobits and Ranma 1/2
Ionzorg
08-08-2008, 07:25 PM
Let's see...of course, when I was a kid I watched Pok?mon and DBZ (because, well, who didn't?), but those don't really count. At one point I also watched Card Captor Sakura (or Cardcaptors, as it is in English). As for watching original and decidedly more "mature" Japanese anime...
A few years ago, in 2003 (I remember because 2003 was when I made my first AMVs), my older brother and his friends started delving into anime a lot, namely Naruto. They'd often practice jutsus, run like the characters in the show, and other nerdy Naruto jargon, and I had to know what the hell they were doing all the time. I started watching the series and it was awesome. ;D So I finished with that, did the whole fanboy obsession thing for a while, and my liking for the show eventually cooled off.
Soon afterwords, in 2005, AMV Hell 3 was released. ;) I had been a fan of AMVs for a few years, and I adored the first two, but it wasn't until #3 (and, a few months later, 0) that I realized, more or less, the same thing that Useful did. I wanted to understand as much of the video as I could. That little endeavour sparked my watching subbed Elfen Lied, Full Metal Alchemist, Excel Saga, Bible Black, some OVAs like Eiken and Puni Puni Poemi, and probably a few more.
As of today, my list is pretty unpopulated. This winter I finally got to watching Azumanga, which was well overdue, and now I've also got Chobits and Hellsing under my belt. Believe me, I love anime, I truly do. But I can never seem to find time for it. :'(
^ Long. :P
P.S. My next project will be either Death Note or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Suggestions?

Aye, while Haruhi is a great show from the beginning till the very end, Death Note is kinda unbalanced. Till the death of one of the main character it's great, but after the introduction of Mello and Near it sucks balls big time.

I never really got into Anime until I started university two years ago, when I would keep walking into my freinds room only to find the likes of Azumanga and, dare I say it, Excel Saga being watched. At first my reaction was the usual: "What the hell? How the hell?" and "can I watch it?". And it sort of grew on from there I'm pleased to say.
That being said I had run-ins with anime before on the (holds cross and begs God for forgiveness) Cartoon Network and Toonami channels with the usual DBZ/GT, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop cross. But the absolute first time I had a run in with anime was on Fox-Kids when it first started airing with Tekkaman Blade (Techno-Man in English). Nostalga led me to download the series to watch a while back...
yeah...
You know what they say about never meeting your heros?

I started really getting into anime when I was in sixth grade back in 2001 with Escaflowne. I started to buy DVDs and get more into the things that weren't shown on TV. I stopped for a couple years and then started watching again back in October after seeing Hell 4, I've seen a hell of a lot of shows and movies since then. I first started getting manga around last summer after seeing the Battle Angel Alita clip from Hell 3 and thought that it looked like it would be cool, I have around fifty manga volumes in my collection now, and I really only started expanding from Alita in December.

hm, sailor moon was my first show, though, the first anime I saw was Akira. My neighbor Bill let me borrow his copy. I kinda had this HUGE crush on him at the time, and did everything he did to get close to him. I had no idea what anime was until that point. I watched akira, and my mind was blown. There was blood in this! And my God, I was "scandalized" that there was a half second of a girl without her shirt on! After finishing the show, I hid the tape in my diary drawer with all my most secret and personel of items, as I was afraid of being cuaght with this tape. I was THE goody two shoes at that point, and I felt like this was one of the most evil things I had ever done, watching an "adult" show with adult themes. I returend it right away, and was offered Vampire Hunter D. I wasn't going to watch this "foul anime" anymore, but i'm a SUCKER for vampires. I thought, "oh, how bad could one more be?" I watched it, and I just kept going from there.
Sailor moon is what really won me over though. It was more my pace, with less blood/nudity (in the american verions, at least) and more focused on romantic plots. THAT i could get into! :) I watched it about 4-6am, and at that tiem i had to share a room with my brother (long story). Since he didnt' get up that early, and slept next to the TV in our room, i had the volume set on one, and sat directly in front of the TV. I kinda damaged my eyes doing that, and i need to wear glasses 24/7 now lol. Still, glasses make me look hawt, so it was totaly worth it :)

Was vaguely interested as a kid, but I'd have to say it started in 2002 or so when I saw some Cowboy Bebop episodes at a hotel over Thanksgiving. Started watching some of Adult Swim every Saturday after that and got into it properly as a college student via an otaku I happened to befriend.
I guess I started regularly watching anime abuot 4 years ago in my junior year of high school. I was at my friends house and he was watching Azumanga Daioh on anime on demand. I thought it was pretty cool and I never knew there was an anime on demand channel, so I watched a few shows on that such as King of Bandits Jing and others that I don't remember. After a little while I regularly downloaded animes. But after I watched AMV Hell 3, I downloaded like crazy to see some the shows that were included in the hells.
As for manga, I guess I started around the same time. My friend lent me what he had of Negima which was like 1-12 or something like that, then I watched the series and thought the Manga was way better. I probably should read more. Only thing I'm really following in terms of manga is Black cat which I don't think I've checked in quite a while.

hehe, beleive it or not, I was the most perfect kid you could find. Straight A's, never smoked, never drank, never swore, never went out without parents, always went home after school, helped out with chores, and i wanted to be a NUN. We're talking so clean i practically shined.
The transformation to the dirty, horny nympho you all know and love didn't occur until much later in life. When I was about 17, I found out that the God I had been brought up had a problem with me liking boys AND girls. I was told straight out that I'd never be a Nun, and I was going to fry in hell for the crime of existing. I had a tad identity crisis and had an Emo phase for my late teens. I didn't really snap out of it until I went to college, and fell in love with a girl...
Still, things never went far with her. Still, chasing her kept me going for two more years. I had my second identity crisis, and fled my home state of good ol Mass and ran away to California. I was 23 then, and I hit San Francisco. I didn't have a clue to what I was doing, but it was there I had my first real date; so yea, the nympho Vicky didn't have a date until I was 23, if you can believe it. I was so nervous being with another woman too... after two weeks of dating, she wanted to go further than kissing. I was all "huh?" with Virgin innocence, when she took off her shirt. Of course, my natural instict was to make up an excuse and get the heck out of there lol. I blew that pretty badly, and didn't get another date until I was 25.
I started using "foul languange" at 24, as by that point I had accepted this new me, and that I wasn't exactly "church friendly" anymore. I had my first beer when I was 25, and didn't get laid until I was 25 either. Do recall, i'm only 26 lol. (ok, i turn 27 in a month). I've been um, VERY busy in making up for lost time since then lol. I've gone from little Miss Sunshine to the BDSM queen. My early lady lovers were all femme, so they trained me to be thier butch. Being 6'5" they assumed that was my role. As I usually say, I'm a butch by trade, but a femme at heart. Yes, I know how to crack a whip and can fit my entire fist up your back door, but I prefer hugs, soft kisses, and being submissive. I hate how this wretched body of mine has typed me into being a butch... you wouldn't know it by how i am in bed, but all my fantasies are of being submissive.
And... I am way the hell off topic, arn't i?

My father's parents were VERY conservative, as they practically disowned my cousin for marrying a black man. Heck, my "home" town is very conservative as to this day we have an active KKK here. I freely admit that until I was in high school, i was a racist who sympathized with the KKK, as that's how I had been brought up. I thankfully grew out of that phase... i will never, ever forget Vincent Bernard, my friend in high school that opened my eyes to how misguided i was on treating african americans. i joined a rainbow allaince then, and participated in outeach groups for all of high school and all four years of college; i felt I had to make up for the way I had been.
It's ironic, as being in the ALANA program ( african, latino, asian, native amaerican allaince) was the first step towards me joining the GSA ( the gay straight alliance) as a "straight" ally. I figured if i was fighting for equality, equality should be for all. It was in the GSA of my college that i met my first gilrfirned, and figured out i wasn't straight lol. If i hadn't been raised racist, if I hadn't met Vincent... then i may never have realized fundamental truths about myself.
Still, to answer the question ( i get off topic easily ,don't i? lol) it was how i was raised for the most part, in a very conservative atmosphere. I mean, as recently as yesterday, my only surviving grandparent was saying she didnt understand why I, a woman, bothered to go to college. I didn't need a job, as my husband would take care of me. Silly me!
Question 2: My transformation secrets, eh? I'll see what I can do. How to become Vicky in three easy steps!
1: Love yourself.
I used to be overly concered with rules, regulations, of being "proper" and setting a good example for others to follow. **** THAT! I had to let go of trying to be someone i wasn't, and just embrace who i was. I was brainwashed that I had to be good for goodness's sake, that god (or big brother, or santa clause ,take your pick) is always watching. the first thing to do was to accept myself and my many, many, flaws, and make the best of it. If people don't like me, it sucks for them. I move on, make some new friends who do, and enjoy the here and now, consequences be damned.
An example: when i worked retail, i used to wear my "LGBT rights" pins at work. I used to get a lot of trouble for that, but i deflected customers angry remarks with a cheeery disposition. I was happy with myself, even if they were being jerks.
2: Don't be afraid to make a fool of yourself.
If you love yourself, love yourself no matter what you do. Be nuts, go wild! Blurt your lfie story on the internet. Flirt with people you think you don't have a chance with. try new thigns, no matter how badly you suck at it (for me, this would be dancing lol). go new places, meet new people ( i went to california and to the bars, but to each thier own). You're going to make some MASSIVE mistakes and look like a fool sometimes, but you're going to have fun doing it. And you never know when a trip somewhere will net you a new friend, or if that person you thought unattainble is within your grasp ( this is especially true for guys, as women dig confidence; if you're confident you have a chance with her, your chances are improved drastically).
At the womens only conference i went to last year, i flirted my way to the head table, and had a drink with Jenny, the speaker of honor. We joked about going to her room after... it didn't happen as my date at the time showed up, but i was damn close lol.
3: Challenge your inhibitions.
For everytime you say " i could never do that!" go on and do it already! I was soooo afraid of the WORD sex, i wasn't comfortable even saying until my 20's. I got over that by taking a job in a porn shop. I sold women - and men - dildo's, vibrators, ben-wahs, whips, floggers, handcuffs, condems of all flavors, and more. I went from being unable to say the word sex to telling someone the best kind of condems to use with KY jelly ( never use an oil based condem with an oil based lube, kids! it will eat through the condem during sex). I can remember having a conversation with my friend Misty, saying I would never, ever be comfortable enough to give a blow job... i mean, have you seen those... THINGS?! so told me she had, and was quite familair with giving them too. I was blown away. Now, i blow guys away lol. I love giving oral now :)
Make no mistake, it's ok to challenge something and stil lbe afraid, or still not be comfortable. Laugh if you want, but i get nauses in utter darkness. I CAN endure it, but i'm more comfortable with a light on. I'm nervous around big dogs, and my sister's cooking. Being nervous or afraid is normal; it's how you react to that fear that is the difference between bravery and cowardice.
That sounds like a good start. It's almost like I knew waht i was doing or something, eh? If you have any mroe questiosn, feel free to ask, as i love havign a reason to talk about myself :)

You scare me, really...you have an addiction to typing, don't you?
Have you ever thought about a book? Smth like How to become Vicky for dummies?
But you know, following these rules is against your rule #1

heh, not really. you see, i realize now that i spent most of my life trying to hide who i was behind this mask of being super good. I was afraid to let my guard down, to let anyone in. it was one of those "if i never let anyone in, no one can ever hurt me" mentalities. But you know what? that sucks. i stopped pretending to be someone i wasn't, stopped following the script of how i thought i was "supposed" to be, and just BE me. i used to be ashamed to say " i like anime" as i thoguht it would make me seem unlady like. I mean, SERIOUSLY. I had to get my head out of the clouds and not be ashamed to say i like anime, or hildren's card games, or sex, or whatever. The bottom line is, i stopepd trying to please everyone else, and began living to please myself.
And yea, i made those ruels up as I wrote the post...they seemed like a good diea at the time lol.

But really, there are few good points in being a hikkikomori. (i'm not one of them and i don't want to be one of them but still ^^)
1) You just do what you want to do
2) You don't need to prove anything to anyone
3) You just can die happily any time you want
(offtop rules!!)

when it comes to thinking a friend is in need, there is no such thing as overkill. one day, a friend of mine said he needed help, and i flew from Boston to Colorado the next day. I stayed for months. If you need help, say the word, and i'll be there ASAP; seriously.
and no, i don't think that's overkill. "do unto others as you would have them do for you" and all that, and i like to think i have someone who would do that for me...so i make myself avaialble for my friends at a moment's notice.
(hugs) ok?

Hey, you overreacted, don't you think?
It was about hikkikomori part. Just to confirm that i'm not like that at all. And yes, your point of view about friendship is just great. Of course it's not overkill. I just never saw a person ready to do such a thing.
And i'm not going to kill myself in any case, even if i'll be surrounded by a couple ao feral ghouls ready to rape me to death. So worry not about me (i really think you shudn't even if i really was in trouble it's just impossible to care of every person you ever met)

I started with anime somehwere around the sailor moon faze on ytv and dragon ball started on a small channel called chex, it was a rather unedited version of dragon ball too. but it got me hooked. and as much as i bought anime and watched it and drew it and had much merchandice i didn't start with manga till grade 12. a grade 10 named alex had brought in hellsing and the gree dot hack series, twighlight i think. after i read them i was hooked. I now own over 1000 dollars worth. i love them so much. i buy them as gifts for others hoping to pass on the cancerus anti drug that is manga. more expensive then crack more addicting to otaku and the high last as long as you read it.... and have someone in earshot to rant about it lol.

um... started with anime... i think sometime around 1996ish... that is if you count early morning before school episodes of pokemon or digimon, maybe some sailor moon... i don't quite remember it well...
either way became more dedicated around 2002ish, we got better internet and it was easier to find shows, that and adult swim was running some better stuff back then.
